Robert Wadlow - The Story Of Robert - Documentary 1975

- Here's a fascinating documentary made in 1975 I chanced upon recording one Sunday afternoon back in the 1990's when Carlton Television was still broadcasting in the London area. - The Story of Robert Wadlow - The Tallest Man that ever lived. I was fascinated about the phenomenon of Robert Wadlow since reading about him as a child in The Guinness Book of Records, and I always dreamed of being the tallest man in the world myself alas and thankfully due to the influence of my genetic inheritance from the Little People of Ireland I only reached 5 foot 8. Now having seen this documentary and several others about very tall people I realise that being a moderate height is a blessing as Human giants like Robert Wadlow are usually cursed with numerous life shortening health afflictions caused by the extreme gravity defying stresses on their bodies of abnormal height and weight.
Robert Pershing Wadlow (February 22, 1918 - July 15, 1940) also known as the Alton Giant and the Giant of Illinois, is the tallest person in recorded history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. The Alton and Illinois monikers reflect the fact that he was born and grew up in Alton, Illinois.[1]
Wadlow reached 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m)[2][3][4] in height and weighed 439 lb (199 kg) at his death at age 22. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood were due to hyperplasia of his pituitary gland, which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone. He showed no indication of an end to his growth even at the time of his death.
Wadlow's size began to take its toll: he required leg braces to walk and had little feeling in his legs and feet. Despite these difficulties, Wadlow never used a wheelchair.
Wadlow became a celebrity after his 1936 U.S. tour with the Ringling Brothers Circus and his 1938 promotional tour with the INTERCO. He continued participating in tours and public appearances, though only in his normal street clothes. His shoes were provided to him free of charge by a shoe company for which he did promotional work and appearances.[5] Examples still exist in several locations throughout the US, including Snyder's Shoe Store of Ludington and Manistee, Michigan, and the Alton Museum of History and Art. Wadlow possessed great physical strength, until the last year of his life, in which his strength and his health in general had begun to deteriorate rapidly.[citation needed]
Wadlow was a Freemason. In 1939, he petitioned Franklin Lodge #25 in Alton, Illinois, and by late November of that year[6] was raised to the degree of Master Mason under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Illinois A.F & A.M. Wadlow's Freemason ring was the largest ever made.[citation needed]
One year before his death, Wadlow passed John Rogan as the tallest person ever. On June 27, 1940 (eighteen days before his death), he was measured at 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m) by doctors C. M. Charles and Cyril MacBryde of Washington University in St. Louis.[citation needed]
On July 4, 1940 (11 days before his death), during a professional appearance at the Manistee National Forest Festival, a faulty brace irritated his ankle, causing a blister and subsequent parasitic infection. Doctors treated him with a blood transfusion and emergency surgery, but his condition worsened due to an autoimmune disorder, and on July 15, 1940, he died in his sleep at the age of 22 - Zábava
Could you imagine being a 7 ft tall man and coming across someone 2 ft taller than you
yes. easy.
i can imagine even a 100 feet tall human vs 3 feet tall child.

My father, his brother and sister went to school with Robert. My dad spoke highly of him and told such beautiful stories. In the video, at 4:38, the little blonde boy sitting ( from our view ) to the left of Robert, is my father. Apparently this was a photo of the cast in a school play. I am fairly certain my uncle is in a few shots but wasn't able to confirm it was him. They were much closer in age than Robert and my dad. Dad said he was fun, kind, always smiling, and looked at life as a gift to be treasured. He acted just like all of the other kids and according to my fathers stories, didn't expect to be treated any different. What an amazing experience it must have been to have known this Gentle Giant.
How old is your dad?
+Zombie Lauderdale How Tall Was Abraham Lincoln ?
+Kiwi Awesomeness he could be a middle aged man, if you were born in the 60s - 80s you father musg be born in the 20s, mabye idk.
What Happen With Robert Little Brother ?
AwesomeGrandma wow! Cool
5'5 inches at five years old, has made me realize just how big he really was.
He is my height already at age 5 lol..
at age 5 he was taller than me at 28!!
Hes 1inch taller than me and im 12
Carolyn Argabright he was about my height at 5 like jesus
Jesus i was that tall when i was like 8 or 9 but 5 jesus!
The scene with him and his little brother is adorable. RIP Robert
I remember on Guinness Primetime they interviewed him. He said he was the best brother he could have hoped for
I cried that part

R.I.P Robert Wadlow
8 ft, 11.9 inches? Yeah, I'm just gonna say 9ft tall.
he was actually 8 feet 11.1 inches tall. 0.9 inches short of 9 feet. He was measured that height 18 days before his death. He could have possibly been 9 feet tall on the day of his death but they did not measure him so it was unconfirmed.
Daanish Iskandar still pretty much 9 feet tall though
Damn no girl is gonna want to date a 8'11 guy but a 9 ft guy yeah
He was still growing at the time of his death.
Lol
82 years after he died, there would hardly be anyone alive who knew him back then. It's good that this doco was made only 35 years after his passing when there were still plenty of people who personally knew him.
I grew up in Alton, Illinois and my mother went to school with Robert Wadlow. According to my mother, Bob was never treated as a freak and was a true gentleman. No one in Alton had an unkind word to say about him.
so are you are saying.. they speak very highly of him?
I think this documetary not only says alot about Robert but also as Alton Illinois as a community. What a great part of your history.
WBDE: did he go by "Bob?" Or "Robert?" I'm very curious to know what those who knew him personally called him...like your mother.
Bro i live in illinois.idk why but this makes me feel cool to be born in illinois
@@wannawatchu66 bruh do you actually believe this come on this man has to be like 60 at youngest if his mother went to school with robert
He continued to grow until death... just think if he didn't die at 22.
+N Hesterly If he lived now he will be big as T-Rex
+BIG GAME VUK No he would have been bigger than a Brontosaurus ha ha
+N Hesterly his heart would have eventually given out because of how much work it would have to do to keep pumping blood. He's life would have been cut short either way. As the body grows, the organs have to do more work if they don't grow as well- it's why kids wet the bed they're bigger but their bladders aren't. Tall people over 8 feet aren't set to live very long lives their bodies are under tremendous stress all the time.
+N Hesterly It's very unfortunate that he died because of some "silly" infection - even if he eventually wouldn't be able to stand up, he still had a chance to live past 40, like Andre the Giant did.
+Panthera Tigris andre was in huge pain for many years up until his death though.
This made me cry. Out of all the videos I've found on this man... This one touch me. Because I see how much his size cause him so much pain. Other videos just shows him as a freak instead of a normal human being. R.I.P. my friend
He wasn't in pain.
It was a very personal view of Robert wasn't it? I learned so much about it because of this video.
That’s an old documentary. The adult people being interviewed are all dead. And Robert’s classmates, if somehow still alive, would be 100 years old. The little children next to a college aged Robert, would be around 80 years old.
It was made around 1970.
Magnificent Failure it was 1975 - the year I was born.

@@HighTen_Melanie your 45? Nice!
Yeah, made in 75, so 35 years after Robert's death.
Robert is a beautiful soul.
I like how you say "is".
Roberts Wadlow had a old spirit with a great conscience in a young body man in his 22 years..incredible..🎥❤🤗
I agree
Yeah unfortunately he got sucked into Freemasonry.
Your comment is so beautiful , and yes he was that , a wonderful precious soul .
I learned of Mr. Wadlow when I worked at the Guinness Museum in Myrtle Beach SC. There was a life size statue of him at the top of this big staircase. People would stop, stare at his likeness for long periods and marvel at just how huge this man was. No doubt he had a big heart as well. And from all accounts he was a very kind man. So sad that he died at 22. The world will NEVER again see a man grow to almost 9'.
Man I went there last summer and it was so amazing to see his story
I went there last year
Edward Anthony Leone oh wow didn't know his statue was there. I'm planning on taking a trip there this week or next week. Hopefully I will get to see it if it's still there.
When you see a gigantic statue in a town but it’s actually life size.
You know you had a good impact on people's lives when they're paying tribute to you 75 years after yours ended. From one giant to another, rest in peace Robert.
I myself am nearly 7 feet talk, and I enjoy being a gentle giant also.
Joshua Brooks oh wow. Now i feel small. I'm 17 years of age, between 6'4 and 6'5. Well i'm still growing so. Doctors once told me i'd be at least 6'8
Same, being 6 ft 4 1/2 at 14 I really feel bad for the guy.
Only experiencing this world for 22 years...
My doc said I would be 7 ft tall at 18!
Dude would still tower over me by a gargantuan amount
I don't care what you think. The fact is I'm considered a giant even at my height.
Joshua Brooks: You are correct Mr. Brooks. To be considered a giant, a person need only be 6ft. 6in. or taller.
My father was born June 21, 1925 in Alton, Illinois. Preceding my father was many brothers and sisters. My Aunt Leatha who will be 97 this year. They both have fond memories of this man.
That's truly amazing. I wish I could've met him

My Mother in Law she has passed now. Went to school with Robert first at Milton School on Milton Rd. in Alton , IL. She had first went to McKinley School in Alton but her father moved after her mother died to live closer to my mother in laws aunt to help look after the children while her father worked He worked for Duncan Foundry in Downtown Alton. So when they moved Uptown Alton and she was enrolled at Milton she was a year behind Robert. She said he was a really nice boy really cared for people. Boys use to tease him and she said also he would turn red also but never got mad. Then as they grew they both went to Alton Jr High School which at that time Junior high and High School kids went to same school. That changed years later Alton High when I went there in the early 70's was 3 buildings every hour my first year was in a different building my locker was in Main building which was the oldest building and had to carry all my morning class books cause I did not have time to go to my locker each class. But back to Robert, When they were at the High School Robert was the same very nice and caring loved helping anyone. But the teasing got more she said But he never got mad she said he just ignored them and they let up. She said when he walked in the halls to the next classes people really got out of his way they would move to the side they did not want him to step on their foot. But she said he was really careful cause he knew he could harm someone. She said that when he was older he was growing so much that his family had a hard time getting the clothes and shoes because EVERYTHING had to be made special for him and that cost a lot of money mainly the shoes. This was during the Depression So he would do ads and travel for the shoe company and that paid for the very expensive shoes and a little extra. She lived on Brown St as did Robert But Brown St is a very long street and he lived in one part and she lived at another part of Brown St. And they would see each other from time to time but they were not real close friends she said. She told me it really shocked her when she seen he had passed cause he was so young . She did go to the funeral home with some friends and the lines were so long they would have to wait hours and they did not want to do that. She said she and her friends sent a card to Mr and Mrs Wadlow. Robert also joined the masons cause family was in it he belonged to the Franklin Lodge uptown. I remember as a child I went to that lodge to see HIS BIG CHAIR I remember it was so hard for me to get up in that chair, They also had a pair of his shoes and a ring and some other things of his, I do not know if they still have it there or not now. I know Alton had a Large Statue made of him it is up on College Ave. in Alton Il. and a museum. Its so sad what happened to him . Everyone I have ever talked to that knew him always says what a VERY KIND YOUNG MAN HE WAS. He is buried at Upper Alton Cemetery . May he Rest in Peace always.
I love the relationship he had with his little brother. Just so sad Robert had a short life 😢
I love older documentaries!! I could binge them all day. But it’s only every once in awhile I find a gem like this one. Thanks for posting!
RIP and long live Robert Wadlow (February 22, 1918 - July 15, 1940), aged 22
You will always be remembered as a legend.
He looked every inch the good soul he really was. - MAY YOU CONTINUE TO RIP!!. Thanks for this very touching upload.
Robert was such a fascinating character. An honest-to-goodness giant. As hard as it was getting to be for him to move around on foot, needing a cane, maybe it was actually a mercy that he died young. The shame of it is that he seemed so naturally likable.
This film humanized him so well.👏
People don't realise how dangerous it is to grow abnormally tall.
It can be hard on the heart and the circulation can be compromised.
Without a doubt. His size was too much for all his organs, and bones.. especially his Heart! 💗
If he didn't pass that day, he would've grown some more, and his health a lot worse. He would have
been in more pain..
I live in Alton, I drive by his statue every day and I've never really known much about him, just that he was born here and was a gaint, I'm glad I found this, thanks for uploading
He had a pituitary tumor. That contributed to his incredible height. If he had been born later, that tumor would have removed and with medication he would never have reached that height. He was an incredible man. They had a statue of him in San Francisco and made it true to his size. It was quite amazing!! Rip
Nowhere at all does it say he had a tumor.
@@lyricessence a tumor on the pituitary gland is what causes giantism, it puts pressure on the gland making it secrete a lot of growth hormone.
What a genuinely kind young man, his heart is as big as his size.

RIP Robert Wadlow. I’ve read about you, sir since I was a child and was always fascinated by your story. This film does an excellent job of casting light on the peaceful and respectable person you were in life and how dear you were to
your family, friends and community. You are missed, you are remembered.
Both uplifting, and very sad. What a wonderful person Robert Wadlow seems to have been. I'm sorry that the world lost him at only 22 years of age. RIP Robert!
The gentle giant. He handled everything with such grace. RIP Robert.😊🙏
What a beautiful soul... Rest in peace Robert.
Its funny how people say Rest in Peace when someone dies. When actually, the person has
left that body and on his way to enjoy a new life in Heaven! The Body I guess will rest in peace?
Prior to this documentary, I knew nothing of Robert other than his picture in the Guinness Book of World Records. I am so pleased to have watched this. He sounds like a wonderful young man with a very caring family. A life well lived.
4:14 made me wonder how many of those children entered the Second World War as young men
Wow. Many, many, many. Probably all the boys in his school.
What a beautiful man whose example of grace and honor stood taller than any man in his day.
Heartwarming and heartbreaking. Unfair. Such a nice guy.
i vividly remember seeing his pictures in our guiness book of world records when i was young, so to watch this documentary + see what kind of guy he was just made me so happy. thanks for sharing this beautiful story, what a guy!
this documentary is a treasure. they really captured his kind, gentle spirit. he seemed like he was a real sweetheart. 💜

I would have dated him if we lived in the same era, he seemed like such a wonderful human being.
I like that his tombstone is taller than all the other ones Rip
A wonderful documentary about a wonderful man. Thank you for sharing his story.
His kindness, understanding of others, and cheerful outlook on life was in proportion to his size...in fact, bigger! RIP Robert, we all can learn from your life's story. A fine young man whose heart it seems was the biggest thing about him!
Happy to find this video. I grew up in Belleville, Illinois and heard about Robert from my father who met him at a shoe store in St Louis. He appears to have been a fairly happy person although we see only the public side.
RIP Robert.
How wonderful there are so many pieces of film and recordings of him. The films of him with his little brother were particularly endearing.
Aww he seemed like such a pleasant and humble man
I always get teary eyed at 24:50
"I would like to be like everyone else"
So humble
It's bad enough at 6ft9, I can only imagine the 8ft area. Funny to see another tall Robert. Makes me sad that he passed so soon but that did not stop him from making his mark on society! R.I.P.
My Grandpa , knew Robert. He told me that when someone would get on his last nerve , he would take off their hat, and put it on a peg on a telephone pole. My family went to the same church that Roberts family went to.And Grandpa told me that he was a kind person.I was born in Alton, and lived on Alby street in the 60's.
Good lord, I'm 69 and hadn't heard of him til now. Poor sweet fella, died at 22, not right he should be so forgotten. Thanks for posting.
So sad that his life ended so early. Very fascinating and makes me wonder what his life was like on a daily basis. I'm sure he wished he could have been normal like everyone else, but he seemed to handle it with grace. I would have loved to meet him and get to know what he was like.
While watching this video i couldn't help but think how pleasant it must have been to live during that time. Seems like everyone got along back them. Back then politics wasn't dividing our country like it is now. I wish our country could get back to being a harmonious and respectful to one another once again.
That statement at the end is all I needed...a good person is what most want to be when things are said and done no matter how we got there
this year will be 100 years since he was born. A remarkable human being and his record has stood the test of time. It might probably never be broken either.
When he died he was 8ft 11inches and they said he was still growing, just how tall could have Robert gotten if he had lived. It makes you wonder.
Dale Boxsell over 9 feet for sure
He grew 4-1/2 inches in the last 2 years of his life and he was in his 20's. Had he even lived to 25, he could have been close to 9'3".
Estimates say 10’3” which is just astronomical

Such a well done documentary. I would have loved to known Robert. What a kind, gentle person.
I remember back in 5th grade we went to Houston, Texas for a field trip to NASA. We went to this place where there was this animatronic Robert. He'd be sitting down, and was still about a foot taller than me. I thought he was just sitting there. Then he scared the shit outta me by standing up (because he was an animatronic). When he was standing up, he was now at least 3 or 4 feet taller than me. Every 5 or so seconds he would sit down then stand up again.
probably the ripleys believe it or not place
Wow thats a cool story
I just measured my apartment from my ftom to the ceiling and it's only like 8ft1. He would not be be able to stand straight up at all if he came to my place. Being that tall most the been annoying.
Much worse than that such exceptionally tall people suffer suffer terribly from spinal pain etc from continual crouching.
He had such a big heart and in most of his pictures he was so happy to be home with his family....sometimes you wish you could go back in time to meet such gracious ppl
He seemed so caring towards his tiny little brother, very sweet videos and I'm sure a treasure for their family to have left of them.
What a nice person! I had seen his mentions in the Guiness Book, but never saw Robert for the terrific fellow he was until I saw this documentary. So sad that his life was short, but he was a model citizen of Alton. He seemed quite happy!

Impressive amount of photos, film and documentation from that period.
I'm writing this comment in June of 2021.
What boggles me even more than size records are longevity records.
The current oldest person in the world is a Japanese woman born in 1903.
It's mind boggling to think she was a 72 year old retired woman when this documentary was made, and is STILL alive today.
Apparently her goal in life is to make it to celebrate her 120th birthday and I'm so excited for her. She's only got like 500 days left to go and she'll go down in history as the 2nd person ever confirmed to make it to 120 years old.

Thank you for this wonderful story .Robert, what a wonderful example of what people with disabilities can do, very positive, kind person. He had wonderful parents. Sad that he died at such a young age. Back then they were far more accepting of those things. Now people are so judgemental, its a look oriented world that we live in, and if a person doesnt measure up to those standards they suffer great humilation. Not all people feel that way, but a great majority do. Its too bad parents cant teach their children to be more loving, kind and accepting of children or people, who are different or less fortunate than they are. God bless the parents that do teach their children acceptance, & kindness. May God bless Robert for being such an inspiring person. May he rest in peace.

I live in Alton and am grateful for the upload. It’s very well done.
From the time I first read about him and how he died, I wished I could go back in time and get him and his family into the habit of carefully inspecting his feet and lower legs for signs of chafing from the braces. And I imagine his family spent the rest of their lives wishing they'd have done it. The world lost such a sweet, gentle soul when Robert passed.
Would of made hell for him it’s good he passed it’s sad but he was probably in so much pain with growing so much
Maybe he should have worn special socks under the braces.
Aww he was so sweet. It's a shame that he died so young. He died four days after my grandma was born. Im good they saw him as a person. RIP Robert Waldow 💖😟
