Cool
alfred is a useless summon against bsb
Fun fact: If you clip the camera under the helmet you can see the pupil of his eye starting to collapse, which, according to the eye of a blood-drunk hunter is a sign of falling to the “scourge of beasts.”
Was snooping the replies to see if anyone had mentioned it, dude was already 'dying' and went out Like That, and it was all for nothing, anyway.
It would have been a gret idea to find him in the Hunter's nightmare as a secret boss or sum
Of course. What else can I possibly say but “of course.”
@@Tacogoatit’s up to the player if it was all for nothing.
Me when I spread misinformation:
The worst part is that the Cainhurst Queen *doesnt* die.
Especially if you bring her remains to Ebrietas boss arena and revive her. Makes his sacrifice even more worthless.
@@Idiot_Supreme I think that's suppose to be the poetic part. He did all that bs for nothing
@@Idiot_Supreme what? I've never heard about this
@@jaeger2780Yep! Once she's been killed you can take her remains (literally a glob of flesh) to the room where you fight Ebrietas and a prompt will come up at the statue of Rom. Then you teleport back to Cainhurst Castle and she's back on the throne.
*best part
I see Alfred as a miniature of the Healing church.
On the surface, they’re kindhearted and friendly, almost attractive, but present them with something or someone who doesn’t fit in with their society and they brutally take joy in their destruction.
And, both Alfred and the church fail. For Alfred, you can revive the queen of Cainhurst after he’s martyred himself, and for the church, Kos outlived the pain it inflicted on her and her child, and the church eventually collapsed into their own beastial blood.

Yea but like if I don’t do that then he wins so

“Pyramid head-ass helmet”
Perfect description
Tf
Also the pyramid hat resembles the cone hat of penance called a capirote, worn specifically by penants to draw attention away from the self and towards god, thus the cone shape pointing towards the heavens, it symbolises repentence and devotion to god (unfortunately this hat has also been commandeered by a certain group of white supremacists). This style of headgear is also featured in the game Blasphemous, a similar dark fantasy metroidvania game that has intense themes of body horror and religion. If you haven't played you should, its fan-freaking tastic, its art design is phenomenal, its lore is rich and deep, and its boss fights are super fun aswell!
I was going to say this, but glad someone recognized it as well :)
Skyen actually made a video on Blasphemous :)
I remember that the guys wearing a capirote in the processions at the holy week scared the shit out of me as a chid
Thanks for this comment, I have been wondering about the Blasphemous hat and whether it was a real thing for ages. Will use this as a jumping off point for some further reading!
blasphemous is a soulslike too
Let’s also not forget that before and during the boss fight he helps you with he’s using the Kirkhammer, but after he gets word of potentially finding the vile bloods he starts using the executioner’s wheel, a weapon stated in game to cause tremendous pain to those it’s killing, which ironically is kinda the polar opposite of executing weapons
Alfred’s fate is so sad to me, I think he’s one of the characters in Bloodborne that the kindest thing you can do for them is withhold information, just like with Gascoigne’s daughters
It plays into a theme with cosmic horror, some things are best left forgotten
Sadly, in his case that doesn't work. When you first meet him. His irises are shrunken and he has some tell tale signs of blood lust. He is already gone. He's just forcing himself to keep it together long enough for him to complete him mission.
you can’t compare alfred and gascoigne’s daughter. the little girl was innocent, alfred is not. you see it at the end of his quest, he is not a good person at all
@@psychoamnesia1Alfred is innocent. He absolutely did nothing wrong at all.
Wait, when you tell gascoigne’s daughter about Oedon chapel she dies! I thought it was just a bug
“Fighting monsters doesn’t protect you from becoming one” WOAAAAGHHH THATS A COOL LINE
Similar to that bit about the abyss from Nietzche, doesn't take away from the quote but it's fun how similar ideas will pop up again. Basically you will become what you surround yourself with, and if it happens to be copious amounts of nightmare monsters then there you go.
You might enjoy the story "I am Legend." The short story, NOT THE MOVIE.
Side rant: Apparently, the movie was shown with the original ending, but the test audience whined that it wasn't a happy ending, so they changed it. I don't dislike Will Smith, but he was the wrong casting for that character that more resembled Hunter Gascoigne.
The icing on the cake is that if you manage to get to the Queen of Cainhurst before him and join her covenant, Alfred dons the gold cap early and attacks you on sight, regardless of your previous relationship with him. Shows the fundamentalist nature of his beliefs quite well.
Is this actually true? He's never done that whenever i join
When does that happen? I've played through multiple times and he's never attacked me after joining the covenant.

time to test it
And then you revive Queen Annalise, rendering his martyrdom completely pointless.
Then again, it was pointless to begin with. Annalise is a queen of nothing. There are no more Vilebloods, her entire order is gone (destroyed by Alfred's people), and she has apparently been denied the right to birth a Great Ones' progeny. By outlasting her enemies she has won nothing and lost everything.
She wasn’t denied it, it was probably more that she wasn’t supposed to be the VB Queen. Arianne was.
@@shadexvii3975 you're probably right om the money. Either way she got dusted
Anyone know the Bloodborne lore about why the queen revives? 🤔
@@lilstubbs9553 unfortunately I got nothing. Best guess I have is that they’re a similar to Yharnam? You get an item from her after beating her that seems to imply she’s immortal or eternal, and so it’s possible the vile bloods are some weird offshoot? Idk though
@@lilstubbs9553 Queen Annalise was the first and apparently only one of Cainhurst to consume the forbidden blood offered to them by the Byrgenwerth scholars. We have no lore saying how the other Vilebloods came to be but we know that Annalise has two special abilities tied with being the first Vileblood; She is Immortal and is the only one who can make more Vilebloods. I believe she continually produces the Great One blood in her body and that blood is what allows her to survive absolutely anything. Only way to test this is to see if immolating her remains actually destroys the tissue or not.
Easily one of the weirdest parallels in a game, he’s so jovial and kind, and he sounds like a passive person. Yet he creates one of the most horrific and gory scenes in any fromsoftware game ever.
He's becoming a literal monster. His pupils are misshapen if you look up close. Eventually he would have transformed into a beast.
He remained true to his goal and purpose and made sure he never completed his transformation. Dude did everything right, given his situation.
I have to admit a cleric beast with the pyramid hat would be pretty awesome.
An even cooler design choice for Alfred is the most subtle. referenced in the description of items alone, we learn that beasthood nags at the eyes, insight and delirium will pull and tug at your pupils, breaking whatever boundary they have and cause them to be malformed and grotesque, a sure sign someone is succumbing to beasthood is that their pupils have begun to distort.
If you look closely at Alfreds face, which you can only do via monocular or by putting your camera against a wall... you will see his pupils have begun to warp. For even if it were an option to save somebody, you can only slow down the corruption of the church's healing blood, Alfred's descent into madness was inevitable, and he indulged gleefully in his beastial brutality. Who knows what visage he might have beheld beneath that golden ardeo whence we meet him once again, but im certain it was not the handsome man we once knew.
This is probably the reason he martyred himself, to die as a man and not a beast
Underneath the pyramis helmet is a bag the wearer has fastened across their face. Not only does it make the wearer completely blind, its a presistant motif of the people of Yharnam to wear blindfolds.
Sight is for the weak
He's not subtle at all about his hatred for vilebloods, he refers to them as ''creatures who threaten the purity of the church's blood healing'' the first time you ask about them
The fact is that they are indeed evil, whether or not they threaten the healing church, they kill innocent hunters for their blood and enjoy executing people to watch their souls writhe in rage.
Bloodbornes most important lesson:it’s fun to kill things with a wagon wheel
Alfred is like a black templar of warhammer. a zealot to the end
Who isn't zealot in the game?
I would say Alfred is one the more sane characters in Bloodborne, plus he knows that the queen is immortal, that's why he mashes her body.
" What good is your immortality now?" - Alfred
"He who fights monsters should see to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."
- Friedrich Nietzsche
Pray that you don't blink first
Awesome
He kills himself because he was becoming one, he was already becoming a beast
Me: hey buddy, here's the way to get to the place you're going!
Alfred putting a gramophone bell on his head: MY DESTINY!!!
To be fair to Alfred, Annalise charges her followers with murdering other hunters in order to gain blood dregs, which they then give to her in order to allow her to give birth to more vilebloods.
Blind faith sometimes leads you to truth i guess
The Cainhurst nobles also loved to execute people and watch their vengeful spirits dance as described by the executioners gloves.
Evil VS evil.
Exactly, she is more evil than him
True, but it makes more sense when you consider he is an executioner. An executioner's role is to give death as quickly as possible, executing a condemed one because it is rigtheous (in a religious context, it would be leaving God to judge if you deserve punishment or not); in the case of Alfred, not only did he find accomplished with avenging his master, he found extreme pleasure in doing so, he found delight on the very act of violence.
What’s really interesting to me abt Alfred is that you can walk up to him in full Cainhurst regalia with the rune and he won’t react at all. Which is either an oversight from the devs (seeing as we know with Adella and Ludwig that NPCs can react to what clothing you wear) OR my personal theory is that he’s never seen a vileblood before and is doing everything off faith and hearsay . (In that he never even knew Logarius or the original executioners and picked up the mantle long after they were all gone since they’re all implied to be dead.) he even says he was a hunter before he became an executioner.
The definition of " if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes back"
I mean, he calls himself a hunter of Vilebloods. It's not like he was hiding his intentions.
The funny thing is, the game will let you undo his violent actions by taking a piece of Annalise's flesh to an altar in the secret basement level of the cathedral in central Yharnam. Time will flow in reverse, and Annalise will be restored to her normal self. Even if you don't carry out this task, Annalise is not truly dead. As the queen of Vilebloods, Annalise is cursed with immortality, and can never die no matter what is done to her. Even rendered nothing but a pile of gore and crushed flesh, it still writhes with life, implying the horrifying truth.
His weapons are also interesting. When you summon him he uses the kirkhammer, a standard for healing church hunters. But when he goes for the queen he uses Logarius' Wheel, a weapon used to be as brutal as possible.
Another thing is I don't think he's necessarily wrong to hunt the vilebloods. They are the darkwraiths of this world, they hunt hunters indiscriminately to take their blood and give it to the queen. But if you look further back, the vilebloods were born out of a rightful distrust of the church when a byrgenworth scholar brought back blood to cainhurst. They started as an enemy of the church and the game is unclear when they started to hunt people for their queen. In this way Alfred is just part of a loop, the other side is evil and must be stopped but that applies to both sides.
the path to hell is paved with good intentions after all
Who knows, maybe they became the way they were because of the church’s prejudice against them because they chose a different type of blood.
Vilebloods werent evil like at all they literally exile any bad apples and most hunters sign up for that like its in the job description , the hunter does the same so doing it so a woman can have her dream and people back so she isnt alone and i dont know where this idea of the cainhurst nobles being evil mosters came from , they were nobles they had minded their own business for a while other than when the church decided they didnt like that cainhurst had the blood
@@gasi-kxrma The blood dreg item calls cainhurst hunters "blood lusting hunters". They hunt other hunters that are just doing their job. Being a hunter doesn't make you bad, there's just some bad hunters.
Exactly like how almost all of the wars in this world start
One quote from Shenpai's Bloodborne video comes to mind where they're discussing characters: "blah blah is like Icarus who flew too close to the sun. And Alfred is racist"
My favourite detail about him is that, if I remember correctly he shares the same VA as Solair and seems to me almost like a twisted dark version of our favourite sun bro
I always kill him after giving him the letter, but before he goes to Cainhurst, in my mind the MC sees the beastly madness start to take over in Alfred's eye. Rather than to subject him to the Hunter's Nightmare, the MC spares him from that fate.
Kinda useless since he kills himself after "killing" Annalise
You can also read Alfred as a typical abuser, completely normal and enchanting to everyone around him that he deems worthy to be on his side and a maniac that takes pleasure in the suffering of others to the point of brutally wounding them for life psychologically or physically.
Annalise becomes a literal lump of unrecognisable flesh after he brutalizes her, however, u can partake in her healing and revival, very much being a symbol of what people that suffer abuse have to go through to heal from it.
If you consider all of the other ties that bloodborne has to the horrors that women suffer with their bodies, this reading just fits, and surprisingly u can even take it in a positive tone, that no matter what abuse you suffered you can still heal and live your life afterwards and what you suffered doesn't make you who you are, just like Annalise goes back to being a queen.
that's a... mildly comforting interpretation.
Lmao xd
this is… an interpretation.
This was the interpretation I was hoping to find. Thank you.

*me, first seeing him:* eh, he isnt that hot..
*me, now seeing his art:* ..now i get it-
It's not that Alfred became a monster, but he always was one. That part of him slips out in his dialogue once he gives you the Wheel Hunter Badge. I also find it more fitting for you to kill him in the throne room, because he has a whole bunch of dialogue that tries to pin you as the monster, such as "bloody fool! Has the blood gone to your head?" Or trying to convince you not to kill him when he says "the blood! You've spilled my blood!" And showing no remorse when you two are fighting each other, even though he puts himself as kind and cooperative when he says "pathetic! As you deserve!" Alfred was always a monster from the start, he just made a good job at hiding it from you.

“Kills himself to become a martyr”
That’s… not quite how that works, I think…
One of my favorite details about Alfred and the Executioners is that the faction’s signature weapon, Logarius’s Wheel, is charged by feeding it your vitality. Very similar to the constant health drain from the Vilebloods’ Chikage. The Executioners aren’t just brutal, violent fanatics. They’re also hypocrites.
To be fair, Analese was a sick little woman
"Just because you're fighting monsters doesn't mean you can't become one."
Won't lie that can be true about a lot of things.
Other things to note are his weapons he uses, first being a Kirk hammer against the BSB, a flashy religious piece that’s a sword sheathed in a church brick inscribed with holy text. I loved it for how obvious it was saying the church was heavy handed. But then he uses the Logarius wheel, which is pretty messed up all things considered. It’s not a blade, or a gun, a club or whip. It’s just a wagon wheel. One that has been used so much it hosts countless angry souls inside that make it hit harder. As if to say the church is not only heavy handed, but that it gets dangerous and bloody when desparate.
Just started to play bloodborne for the first time , i attaked him by accident because i thought he wa some random villager . Now hes attaking me f....
That Pyramid Head comparison is probably pretty apt since it sounds like he assigns himself the role of brutal executioner that Pyramid Head serves for a demented psyche in Silent Hill 2.
In the world of bloodborne I'd say he was a pretty good guy all things considered

Eh, the Vileblood Queen deserved it. The Church may be just as bad, but the Vilebloods regularly murdered people in order to harvest Blood Dregs.
Afred's only mistake was not sealing the Queen's mushed up body in a box and burying that box somewhere hidden, before killing himself.
Finally, someone else who read about what the queen does! They literally kill innocents for blood
Gee, bloodborne sure does have a lot of interesting and unique characters and plotlines. Too bad I missed all of them.
I love that line “fighting monsters doesn’t protect you from becoming one”.
I think part of the reason that Alfred acts so violently towards the queen is because on the wiki, it says that his eyes become collapsed at some point meaning, the scourge of the beast has taken hold of him. This is probably why he is so obsessed with violence at that part of his quest line.
No one tries to read item descriptions or just look at the characters' faces

Alfred scares me. I love this game b/c I can unpack my trauma. Alfred is a reminder that because I was raped when I was 13, others will see me as nothing to be abused and slaughtered. The metaphor of violence agenst your body justified by your inherent evilness rings so loudly here. I love this game, the church terrifies me. They told me to kill my self if I wanted to be redeemed
Oh shut up
I love the guy because you can just straight up ask him about lore, even though he gives you the Healing Church propaganda version, it’s still really cool. He’s fucking crazy though.
It's also a lesson that sometimes the monster doesn't always look like a monster
I like him. He feels like my only friend in this game.
that quote you said really reminded me of the quote from Basilisk was which is "No matter how many monsters you slay, there will always be one monster left." (I think that's how it goes)
I would even agree with that thought, if the vilebloods didn't kill innocent hunters in search of blood for the queen, he still helps us on our way and doesn't try to kill us. For me he is a friend
Why the why are people defending the Vileblood Queen? She doesn't deserve sympathy, Alfred's quest is just and, if you leave the quest line alone instead of rejuvenating her, successful.
They did basically the exact same thing with D's brother in Elden Ring!! Love to see a recurring theme.
That’s… that’s not how martyrdom works.
The brightest lights inevitably create the darkest shadows.
Hearing you say pyramid headass caught me so off guard help

"He kills himself-"
WELL DIDDLY GOD DAMN WHY DONT WE DO THE JOB OURSELVES??
Alfred’s rant at Cainhurst was one of the moments I was actually really freaked out by Bloodborne. Seeing as he was always cool, calm, and collected I was genuinely shocked at just how twisted his mind was. “All mangled and twisted, with every inside on the outside” are not the words of a sane person
I love Alfred’s character design
And the best part, I think: You can resurrect Queen Annalise. Quite easily, in fact. Alfred's conquest, his martyrdom, was all in vain. He went there to Cainhurst for nothing, killed Annalise for nothing, killed *himself* for nothing.
Except, you don’t have to resureect her. I have no intention to do so, I stand with Alfred ✊

Well technically he tried doing the right thing since the vilebloods are descendants of the ptumarians, they do have the infected blood of the great ones as well, meaning their blood can infect normal humans. That's why the queen is immortal.
The Healing Church proliferates the exact same infected blood in its blood ministrations, and their conflict with the "vilebloods" (who they named) is about whose infected blood is most pure and holy. It's a conflict over power, pure and simple.
@@nope8603 You can't really separate a religious martyr from the religion they martyred themself for.
His obsession with Logarius is inextricably part of his obsession with the Church. Remember, the Executioners only reach that position _because_ of their obsessive loyalty to, and faith in, the Healing Church. That's why it was so unthinkable to everyone that Logarius had survived his assault on Cainhurst Castle- to them, if he had survived, he would have returned to Yharnum.
And Alfred is part of that same covenant.
And if the defense goes to blood, then anything that protects the Church while killing another source of the blood, can only be considered a neutral act *at best.*
Which is probably the other reason Logarius didn't return- with the information he potentially learned, he may have known he would have to destroy the Church in order to uphold his own moral code.
@@alchemysaga3745 Logarius didn't return because he guards the queen since she can't die so there's no other way of getting rid of her, that is made pretty obvious in the game and even though they were part of the church, Alfred was PERSONALLY fighting for the sake of his former master, Logarius and his sacrifice regardless of what or who that sacrifice was for.
