  • Charles Leclerc has signed a new contract extension with Ferrari but the details and length of the contract are unknown. What does this mean? Why is the length of his contract extension being kept secret? Is there a clause in Charles Leclerc's deal? Are they hiding something from Carlos Sainz? Charles Leclerc clearly loves Ferrari, and has remained loyal to the team, but when will he finally reach his breaking point? Enjoy!

Likely. because it now has exit clauses the team don't want to make public which his previous contract did not . My guess is if Lando hasn't won a race by the end of 2025 or has massively been outperformed by Piastri then the team will allow him to look for other employment. Either way this new/revised contract will set Lando up for life.

Ferrari need to keep Charles, but they also need to prove to him that they can iron out the strategy errors and provide him a truly competitive car. 2022 started off well enough but ultimately ended up being a minor disaster, and while I was hyped for the 2023 car at first, it never felt really that close to Red Bull. Vasseur deserves a bit more time in his role as team principal (and Ferrari would be wise not to cast him away too quickly) and I'm far more optimistic about where the team is headed under him, especially since 2023 Ferrari wasn't nearly the laughingstock that 2022 Ferrari was in terms of strategic execution. But they need to continue to step it up and truly vie for race wins in order to justify keeping Charles. Otherwise he needs to seriously consider leaving.

I'm split on whether I can see Legrerg leaving Ferrari. He seems to be a more emotional person (and not just anger like Max lol), so I think at times he seems too invested in Ferrari to be willing to leave. The team is there mainly for him right now, so he wants to reciprocate that loyalty.

The length of Landos' new deal is being kept secret too. Why do I think this is ? Well because I believe Landos' new deal is not actually a contract extension but a simple renegoiation of contract terms with renewal options and release clauses/mechanisms added alongside a little bit money . That way if thing go awry against Piastri then Lando and /orthe team have a way out of their collaboration. Even if Lando underperforms and is turfed out early by McLaren he will likely be set up for life with the level of money he is about to earn. I have sneaky feel one of those clauses may be he can leave iff Piastri does to him what he did to Ricciardo or Lando hasn't won a race by the end of 2025 . With Charles I suspect he has probably signed a one year extension until the end of 2026 with the options to extend thereafter . Though it is possible Ferrari would allow Charles continue to fall short and mess up the first year of the new 2026 rulws

  • @dustinabigan2776

One thing for sure about this contract is that this could either give him an F1 title or it seals his fate to never win an F1 title if the contract lasts until 2029 as some have claimed late last year that he had a 5-year extension lined up. It's weird there's not much talk on the terms, but I'd imagine they'd want to keep it under wraps to keep Carlos' camp in the dark while also maybe being able to get away with not having to reveal certain release clauses like car or team performance ones that Ferrari may not be 100% in being able to fulfill.

Lots of people seem to be hinting that Charles should leave Ferrari. But where would he go? All the good teams are locked down with their drivers. No one wants the 2nd RB seat except for Daniel, Mercedes and McLaren have two good drivers not going anywhere and any other team would be a step backwards. So I think Charles is right to re-sign and for as long as he can get

I think the contract is most likely to be a 5 year deal that's a 3+2 type thing, it allows him to see how they're doing in the new regs and if he doesn't like what he's seeing with them he can easily dip, but if he likes what he's seeing there's another 2 years there for him to take. It gives an easy out for him if things are bad but also gives some stability on both sides that the partnership could be going until 2029

I don't understand the "if you're not winning in this team just move to another" logic.
First of all, Schumacher fought for the championship 3 years straight from 1997 to 1999 before bringing the title back to Maranello; imagine somebody telling him to give up and move to McLaren in 1999.
Second of all, the same logic should apply to Russell and Norris: Mercedes has been terrible the last two seasons and Norris has never won a race after all these years. What are they supposed to do then, leave their teams? And where should all of them go?

Same was the case for Lando as well. For both of them, their respective teams have underdelivered relative to their talent levels, so maybe not announcing a contract duration was a move by the drivers’ management, so other teams don’t exclude Charles or Lando from their future lineup plans.

  • @tammy6015

There must be a performance clause in the contract because it really wouldn't make sense for him to sign on long term without it and suffer more seasons of Ferrari incompetence. I think they're definitely hiding something from Carlos because there are rumours going around that his contract negotiations have stalled, meaning Ferrari are probably not willing to give Carlos what he wants.

As a Carlos fan, but not necessarily a Ferrari fan, I’m hoping that Carlos will either go to Audi or back to McLaren (although I don’t see how that would be possible with Oscar there and Lando renewing/extending his contract this week) and then John Elkann can stuff it where the sun doesn’t shine.

@@lpollock7893 the problem with Audi is that it’s a new team so it’ll take a few years for them to fight at the top and I don’t think Carlos wants to wait that long. There are no spots available at any of the other top teams either unless he miraculously gets Checo’s seat but I don’t see that happening.

I appreciate loyalty. I've been watching F1 for 15 years and I've never felt that F1 fans value loyalty. What Lando and Charles are doing is something that is massively respected in football (fox example). Sticking with the one team that trusted and bet on you. This might, and indeed does, sound really stupid and I'm not a Ferrari fan (I was as a child, when Schumacher was there, tho) but I think IF there is one team, where it's possible that a driver doesn't just dream of winning a title, but winning a title with a specific team, it would be Ferrari. Not saying Charles thinks that, but as a longtime neutral observer I still think, that there is at least a chance higher than 0% that a driver might just risk not getting a title at all for the chance of getting one with Ferrari and that no other team really even has that potential for that kind of thing. Again, not saying it's the case or that many drivers think so, but winning it with Ferrari also means bringing back glory to Ferrari after decades of drought (except your name is Kimi), like if he'd go to RB or something and wins, it'll be amazing, but not Schumacher 2000 amazing. If he wins it for Ferrari he will be a feckin hero. No one did that since 2007, and between 2007 and 1979 just one other guy did it. Since 1964, that's 60 years ago, just five drivers won a title for Ferrari. So it would be something else. (But then there is money and an athletes will to win anything, at any price and all that...)
