The fake limit imposed on Charles Leclerc by Ferrari’s F1 car

  • For Charles Leclerc, an upgrade that Ferrari played down to a degree completely transformed his F1 season.
Leclerc’s 2023 was split into two parts either side of a change to Ferrari’s F1 car that turned around his form and fortune.
Whether bitten by the traits of Ferraari’s unpredictable SF-23, or seeing his attacking style restrained by his and his team’s methods of taming the beast, Leclerc had some uncharacteristically ineffective weekends in the first two thirds of the season.
That was compounded at times by circumstance rendering him a bit-part player, like Ferrari’s communications blunder in Monaco qualifying, sacrificing his race to support team-mate Carlos Sainz’s victory bid in Singapore, or a luckless failure that caused a formation lap crash in Brazil.
But it was the car itself that caused Leclerc the biggest problems. And it wasn’t until the final third of the year when Ferrari was really able to let him tap into his full talent on a consistent basis.

We all deserve a real fight between Leclerc and Verstappen. The 2 ultimate talents of our generation going head to head. We´ve seen how this can look like a the beginning of last season and we´ve seen it again in Las Vegas. The spark igniting the world of F1 as soon as Leclerc pushes his Ferrari to the limit is something every Formula 1 fan deserves to experience every weekend. I rate Sainz and Leclerc highly. However, I don’t believe they are the best pairing for Ferrari. When Sainz wants understeer and Leclerc wants oversteer, it either forces Ferrari into a compromise that hampers their overall performance or unravels one of their drivers weekends by letting the other thrive.
Again, they are both very capable. Ferrari just needs 2 drivers that prefer a similar setup. It will result in better mid-season development, higher average points hauls per weekend, and a higher likelihood of a title charge.

Ricc's style is actually wierd. He likes a stable, predictable rear with a very strong front-end. In a qualy lap, he brakes a bit early, stabilising the car and yeeting it arround the corner, trying to send it on the exit. That's something that the 2017-2018 rb car did quite well. Ferrari has and always has had a certain level of unpredictability, you have to drive them with silk gloves and be very careful at what the car wants to do, as it won't let you do what you want to do. Similar to Ricc's McLaren, but for other reasons (the McLaren needed some wierd braking techniques to get it to turn, the Ferrari likes to dance on the rear).

Also, it doesn’t allow the team to use the feedback from 2 drivers to improve the car in the very short times required by a race weekend.

This just shows that if a driver cannot fully utilize his driving style given with the given car they massively struggle. Max is described as one of the most adaptable drivers on the grid, but I have yet to see him be comfortable with a car that understeers quite a lot. I do not think he has been tested in that sense. But there is anecdotal evidence to suggest he also struggles when the car is more understeery, like singapore the redbull was front limited for some reason. And everytime he has not gotten pole he has complained about the understeer. But on race day that dialed in understeer usually protects the rear tyres and is not as costly in lap time.

I just wonder who Ferrari will fire this time. Seems like the team has to re-learn the same lessons with new staff so often they have no chance to truly grow as a collective. The people at the very top just need to keep out of it. Also, team strategy has been horrific for several years now, most noticeable from the pit wall. On top of that, Charles is so hungry and so frustrated he pushes the car past it's limits too often. Add to that some bad luck and a ridiculous penalty or two and the season is another sad failure. It's truly a shame, a lot people in the team putting everything they have into it.

As good as Sainz is he doesnt have the raw pace and ability that the drivers like Leclerc Verstappen Norris has. Plus I dont see the desire to become a world champion in him

8:22 but the great drivers don’t drastically lose form just because the car is less oversteery. The great drivers adapt to it, and figure out how to get the most out of the car in spite of it.
It’s amusing that some people will twist themselves into pretzels, instead of simply admitting that drivers such as Max and Charles are missing what is an essential skill for a great driver
