  • Long term review of the Apple Mac Studio after 6 months, was getting the M1 Ultra worth it, how much RAM and storage should you get, what are the best features of the Mac Studio's design & what are the downsides with getting a Mac Studio.
    In this video we'll walk you through the overall design of the Mac Studio, our favorite ports, how quiet it is, how fast its performance has been in our day-to-day workloads, how the M1 Ultra compares to the M1 Max, if it's worth upgrading the GPU cores, a good rule of thumb for storage upgrades and who we recommend should get this computer.

    Back in the mid-90s to early 2000s, I sold PCs (and Macs) when many small businesses were buying their first (and expensive....very expensive in today's dollars ) "practical" computers. I always encouraged customers to buy the FASTEST, Most feature-rich computer that their budget would bear....followed by the quip: You'll never go to work, fire up your computer and complain it's TOO FAST.....but if you "cheap out" it will haunt you....for years.

    Great video. I got the Mac Studio M1 Max with 32gpu and 64gb ram 2tb storage. I am so happy with this purchase. Final Cut, CZcams, photos, on1 photo raw, affinity pro, etc. I have many apps which use a lot of memory, open in multiple spaces. I find the Mac Studio is fantastic at having all my apps open and ready to use at all times. I also love how quiet it’s is and the sd card is so clutch. Best machine I have ever had

    I got the Max in February with 32gigs and I have never regretted it. Probably my favorite Mac ever. And I have had dozens of them going back to the 1980s. I don't think I ever ran out of ram. So no issues at all. Also I do professional video post production, motion, photo editing, and graphic design. There are probably good uses for the Ultra but probably only if you are doing heavy app development or 3D work or something. Anything less get the M1Max and you'll be fine. I also have the M1 Mac mini and I do some basic post production tasks on that too. I really like it a lot.

Performance has been excellent and I saved approx $3000, leaving me the option of upgrading in a few years.

    I went from a 2015 iMac to a pimped up 2019 Mac Pro to a Mac Studio Ultra with 128 Gb memory and it is the first Mac that I am happy with in my Lightroom Classic workflow with dual HDR monitors streaming videos concurrently: finally no lag, no spinning beach ball and snappy transitions between heavily edited images. I went with the MAX, upgraded the ram to 64GB, upgraded the GPU to 32 cores but stayed with the base 1TB storage. I thought $400 for to upgrade to 2TB was price gouging on the part of Apple. I can add external high-speed SSDs when I need them. Also, when I'm finished with a project, I archive everything to an external drive. I primarily use this computer with DaVinci Resolve 18 which has been optimized for Apple silicon. So I'm far very happy with it and astonished how fast it boots up. In fact it boots up faster then the time it take for my displays to turn on. I have three displays connected, two for Resolve and one for full screen video output of my timeline.

    Excellent video. I too chose the “base Ultra” Studio and opted for 2TB of native storage. It took over three months to arrive after ordering. It’s definitely a bit more computer than I need but, having come from a late 2015 27” iMac that underwent two RAM upgrades and native 512 GB SSD storage, I remember saying exactly the same thing almost eight years ago when I bought it. As an enthusiast wildlife photographer I tend to live in Lightroom and Photoshop. What’s been interesting is how those programmes have grown to comsume more and more computing horsepower the last few years and how much slower the old iMac got (I still have it and happily use it for other tasks) I have twin Benq photo grade monitors so did not add the Studio display. I may be branching out to video so wanted to make sure this purchase was going to last for a good five years+. Bottom line: yup, it’s a bit more than I need, wouldn’t be at all surprised if it is “underpowered” in five years’ time and I’m thrilled I have it. Agreed too, it’s dead silent and I havent heard a fan yet. You earned a sub here. Nicely done.

      @pmb6667 Před rokem

      My scenario is similar, as I'm a photographer as well (Film & TV, and also shoot nature/wildlife), and a Production Designer. I still have my maxed out mid-2010 Mac Pro -- all hard drive bays full with 4TB drives, plus a 1TB SSD boot drive and maxed (Metal) graphics card. It's still very fast, but it's just the max OS is at its maximum version it can handle (Mojave) and I need to move forward.
      I'll be getting the *M1 Max, 32core GPU, 64gb ram and 2TB SSD* and will keep my old Mac Pro as a Server instead. I also have a pair Dell Ultrasharp monitors which still work very well, so keeping those too. Thanks for sharing your experience with your M1 Max!

    • @marcusslade9804
      @marcusslade9804 Před rokem

      @@pmb6667 Impressive that you’ve had that longevity from your 2010 Mac Pro. I’d be amazed if people are still making that kind of use of their “new 2023 Mac Pros” in 2036. Presumptuous on my part, but with the spec you identify on the Studio you’re targeting, I’d encourage you to consider the base Ultra model (price-wise it’ll be within spitting distance of what you’re looking at with the Max). Current scuttlebutt suggests the Studio’s iterative improvements might suffer in light of the expected launch of the forthcoming Mac Pro. It begs the question, did Apple make the Studio (particularly in Ultra form) too good? “Cheese grater” Pro buyers from the last few years have got to be scratching their heads on how much they spent on their rigs, given the specs being delivered with the Silicon SOC architecture of the last few years.

    About using your mouse with a right hand. Before I retired, one of my responsibilities was to developed training simulators for Crystal River Nuclear Plant training. I would write plant simulations using a PC interfaced to actual spare Nuclear Plant control cabinets. I used National Instruments LabView software to simulate the plant equipment, reactor, turbine and other plant systems. I interfaced the PC to the existing spare control cabinets using National Instruments NI DAQ hardware. This made it possible for technicians and engineers to solve problems and train without risk to the public. My Nuclear Plant in a PC was an accurate simulation of the entire plant. If they made a mistake under a training situation the simulation would show what would of happened without risk.
    In order to improve our human performance we asked the Buckminster Fuller Institute, Bolder Colorado, to come to our plant and teach us their accelerated learning course. One of the things we learned was that if you are right handed the left side of you brain controls your right hand. The left side of your brain is the logic side of your brain. The right side of your brain controls your left hand and is the artistic side of your brain. A series of exercises and problems turned us all into believers.
    After the course was over I went back to writing software and building more simulators, with one change.
    I started using my mouse with my left hand. It took time to become proficient using my mouse with my left hand but the results were life changing.
    I was using both sides of my brain and my programming rate tripled. I could see solutions to problems that had been road blocks. It changed the way I learned and opened many doors in to my future career.
    So my advice is to keep the apple keyboard and learn to use you ambidextrous Magic Mouse with your left hand.
    I have a M1 Max Studio with a 1TB hard drive. I love all the Thunderbolt ports. The more I use it the more I love it and it runs LabView for Mac flawlessly.

    I went from a dying 2014 iMac to the M1 Mac Mini. The mini was nice, but I quickly realized that even with the RAM options maxed out, it wasn't enough for my needs. Then when the Mac Studio was announced, I right away started the trade-in process for it. Shortly before the due date for the mini to go away, it had a crash so bad, I lost everything on it. My fault, no backups. This is actually the 2nd mini I've had that did this. The 1st being prior to the iMac. That previous mini died right after I transferred everything from it to the iMac. After which, the mini died. Could not power on. My luck with Mac Minis is not a good one.
    Anyway, my Mac Studio specs:
    M1 Max Mac Studio with 64 GB RAM & 500 GB internal storage. I opted for external storage for most things. Figured going this route I can save money each time I wanted to upgrade to a new machine since I wouldn't need to be buying 1TB+ every time.

I am a Foley Artist and use pro tools on my Mac. For me, this is obviously overkill but because of the refurbish price (and buying through a friend who got friends and family) I got the price down to $1836. This is overkill for what I do. I could have gone M1 Mac Mini and been fine but for the price, I got a great deal for the future.

What you can do is to buy an external graphics card and connect it to the Mac studio. In this way, you could really take advantatge. Look at some video or guides on the internet

Also there are some rumors of the M3 chip for the end of the 2023. So if you need a new desktop machine now to Photo and Video Editing there are two choices: Mac Studio M1 Max base model or Mac Mini M2 Pro (with 32 GB Ram). You find maybe a used M1 Mac Mini 16GB for less of $800 but rendering videos will take more time.

    I have an M1 Ultra with maxed out RAM and GPU cores (not maxed out storage though, because I’m not TOO insane), not because I needed it, but rather for two reasons: First, I wanted a powerful small form factor Mac that my g/f can happily use for years after I’m gone (medical issues), and secondly I got a 25% discount on it.
    The Mac Studio’s GPU, even maxed out, is rubbish for gaming when compared with an Nvidia 3090.
    But otherwise, it’s a small, silent, pretty powerful machine and I like it.

Even in Photoshop, Painter, Zbrush, Redshift, Blender, AE, Davinci ext. This is what I experienced in real life projects and workflows. If you have a serious 2D/3D, Video and Graphics workflow go for M1 Ultra base model noting less. M1 Max Studio base model have some issues, simply it is not enough for multi software workflows.

    I think that you made the correct move -You mentioned that software companies are still optimizing for the M1. So if the Studio Max is running at 95% capability, but the Ultra is at 60% - what happens when they optimize it more, and the Max ( pardon the pun ) is maxxed out?
    Comparing the render times and speeds might be different down the road. And the $1400.00 difference might seem like a bargain at that point. I bought the Ultra to future proof the purchase as best I could.
    Now speaking as a colorist, the Apple display is in my opinion a really overpriced GUI monitor - it is a really good GIU monitor but in my opinion it can't be compared to professional displays - especially since the calibration can't be self contained. So the only comparison that makes sense is to a decent GuI monitor, and at half that price point there are lots of comparables.

    Um, you really do need the 64gb due to the increase in data lanes for your M1's SoC memory access (200gb/s vs 400gb/s). Um, also, 128gb gives you lanes of 800gb/s raw memory access for that SoC. So...if going Ultra on the M1, it's really really REALLY going to scream with 128gb RAM in apps that push a lot of data (FCP X, etc). So it's not just about "RAM headroom" but also, with the SoC architecture Apple uses, more RAM = faster RAM access. But, honestly 64gb is plenty fast at 400gb/s bandwidth: MBPs with M1 Pro Max experience fantastic speeds, and don't need 800gb/s. But for my $$ -- if I went with the M1 Ultra, I NEED to go with the 128gb so that I can absolutely be guaranteed full performance of that CPU. My .02.
