    I would have to add that upgrading things like the SSD to larger storage helps with management. Also the 1TB or larger drive is faster than the 512 base.

    I agree. I love my Studio and I’m also using just the base model. It’s a 5-7 year computer for me easily. We’d have to move to 8K video before I think this thing would struggle. It’s insane. My only hiccup is apps that haven’t been updated to Apple silicone. I also wish this came with 1TB storage but I have 16tb RAID thunderbolt storage so it’s really not needed. Dang, I was gonna order the stand but I’m 1 day too late seeing this.

    Great review! I agree totally about the base model, I have one at home and work, and I haven't been able to really challenge it. I use Final Cut Pro, Motion, After Effects, Pixelmator, Photoshop. Sometimes 2 or 3 of them at the same time, and it never starts to fade.

    A bigger internal storage size is available when you buy it. However you are stuck with whatever you bought it with ( internally ). So be aware it is a permanent decision**** I think this should have been mentioned. Maybe it was mentioned and I missed it. It"s not much more expensive upgrading the Internal storage vs the cost of a quality external high speed SSD. I got mine with 1 TB I think it was somewhere around 2400$ with 1TB. If it's going to be your main computer for years. It's well worth it.

    • @stephenvalente3296
      @stephenvalente3296 Před rokem +2

      The upgrade costs for memory and the SSD are insane even for Apple. These elements don't cost them even a fraction of what they charge to make, so maybe if they offered these upgrades at 1/2 their current cost, they'd get more people buying and still make good money., plus make customers happier.
      Since the release of the Mac Mini M2 Pro the lines have been blurred performance wise a little, but think it might be worth hanging fire to see what the next Studio released is like. Keeping the price static in the UK would be a good start. If it gets into the autumn, wouldn't be surprised if the next version jumps to M3 rather than M2.

    • @cjeelde
      @cjeelde Před 11 měsíci

      Exactly! So important: "if you know or plan that you gonna use this new Mac for YEARS then consider picking a larger capacity internal SSD".
      Based on history: OSes and apps will grow over time and you will fill up the storage more and more over the years. This will continue.
      I got an OLD desktop Mac and planning to buy a new one and I feel that I cannot wait for M3 or M4. There will always come better chips in the future. Both M1 and M2 are crazy much better than what I got. I'm talking about Pro/Max editions of Apple's own chips.
      512 GB in a "Pro" Mac in 2022-2023 feels really like less than the bare minimum. Especially if you plan to use your Mac for a couple of years.
      However, if you KNOW that you mainly gonna use external storage devices for your workflow then 512 GB might be good enough. So it really depends on HOW you gonna use your Mac and how you gonna store your files/projects.
      No matter what, a bigger SSD is always better. Will last longer based on physics/mechanics. There's no so called "moving parts" in any SSD but everytime you write to the cells they wear out very slowly. So the larger SSD the better.
      About RAM I got a good feeling that the standard 32 GB will work so great for all average users and for many "semi pros" but also for some pro users.
      RAM: MAYBE pick 64 GB, really maybe.
      SSD: def go for more than 512 GB. At least 1 TB. 1 or 2 TB.
      My dream is 64 GB RAM and 4 TB SSD but that will break my budget. I'm thinking about 32 GB RAM and 2 TB (internal) SSD. For more storage I can always use external HDDs or SSDs, maybe invest in a NAS.
      Two great things about Mac Studio:
      1 - 32 GB RAM as standard!
      2 - 10 Gbps Ethernet as standard!
      And of course it's great to have those two USB-A ports as well. But this is not unique since Mac Mini also got that.
      If you compare Mac Mini Pro and Mac Studio with the same CPU cores, 10 Gbps Ethernet and 32 GB RAM and same SSD size, then Mac Studio is only a fraction more expensive, and for that little extra you get:
      + way more GPU cores
      + huge heat sink so the M2 chip will not become that warm so the fans are kind of idle
      + the I/O on the front (two USB-C and SD card slot)
      + the "SSD" (storage) is not soldered, it's removable for a possible future easy swap (for same size) in case a repair is needed
      It's really great additions that you don't get with Mac Mini Pro.
      I like everything about the base model Mac Studio except the storage. Should be 1 TB as standard. Of course Apple is putting a 512 GB as standard so they will make more money from the customers that will change to 1 TB or more when they buy the machine. It's around 2 weeks of delivery if you wanna make changes on the base model. But it's worth it. I mean, what is 2 weeks of waiting if you gonna use that Mac for years?
      Final words: I cannot recommend 32 or 64 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD or more to anyone. It's always a personal decision. We all have to think for ourselves. But I believe that almost all customers will not regret a SSD upgrade to at least 1 TB. In the end of the day it's up to our needs and wallets which config we gonna buy.
      (For some pro users the M2 Ultra base model is the best buy. That is actually a Dual M2 Max, that's why it got 64 GB RAM. Do you need M2 Ultra? I believe that you know if you need it. Never forget that your Mac is a tool for the workflow. And if that Mac model is worth the money depends on the return of investment that all tech youtubers never talk about. There's 2 kind of return of investment: pure money for businesses and making the days better for home users.)

    Great video and I love your calm presentation style. I agree 100% with your assessments. I'm a fine art photographer and designer and I've discovered that buying a base model Mac on the cusp of a new release and doing so at a higher frequency nets me a better, more capable machine than trying to over-spec a system to future-proof it, as I used to do. And it's more cost effective, because I usually get a better trade-in value to initial cost on base models. I have the same Mac Studio and the display on the way to replace my base model iMac Pro. I'm thrilled that I can upgrade to another base Studio in two or three years and not have to pay a premium for a new display like the old iMac days. Add to that the combination of cloud storage and a pair of SanDisk Extremes, and you're correct, 512 gb is quite workable for storage. Subscribed!

    I agree 100%. I've got a five cam livestreaming rig (Zoom Q2n4k cams, 1080p) and run my audio through Logic Pro via Focusrite Clarett+ 8pre interface. All that gets shoved together and streamed out via OBS. Other programs running are Chrome so I can chat with an audience, Moises and iTunes ("Music", ugh) for the drumless tracks and maybe I'll also have Zoom (the conference software) running all the while. And oh yeah I phorgot to close Fotoshop.
    On my old system (2018 Macbook Pro, the "mid-level" $3200 model, one up from the base) I needed an eGPU to make all that spin, otherwise I'd get so much system lag; the video would get choppy, the track would skip, and it was a mess.
    The new "Base model Mac Studio" does not even blink when I start up all the programs. I have the performance monitor up, showing all the cores working. While the first two are rather spiked, the rest of them are like "meh, call us when you need something!"
    I've had no issues at all with this computer. And just so I don't jinx it, *Mecalekka-hi-mekka-chiney-ho* [throws salt over shoulder]

It gets out of the way and allows you to edit your photography, and has all the built in reference modes for creative work. The only problem is the price! Other than that, it's highly recommended as a default creative display and will work best with Macs.

    I'm thinking of getting a Mac Studio soon - just the M1 Max version, not the M2 Max, as there's a great clearance deal on the M1 Max Studio at a local computer store.
    I used a heavily-upgraded 2008 Mac Pro as my everyday work and gaming computer for several years until it died in early 2021. With a 1 TB SSD running through a PCIe mounting card, 32 GB of RAM and an R9 280x graphics card (with full Metal support in patched Mojave), it was EXCELLENT for gaming. I replaced the Mac Pro with an M1 Mac Mini (8 GB RAM, 512 GB storage), and while this new computer had half the storage of my Mac Pro, I quickly came to realise just how MUCH storage 512 GB really is.
    Moreover, I'm pretty economical with my storage - I always make sure to keep at least 200 GB free - but over the last week, I backed up and purged plenty of videos and files I no longer needed, and moved my iTunes and Apple TV libraries to my external SSD. As a result, I now have just under 360 GB free!
    Even with a bunch of big games installed (I'm eager to play the Mac port of Death Stranding), a 512 GB Mac Studio should have ample space.

    Excellent, concise, and drama-free video. thank you! one thing i heard no mention of is RAM on these Max chip studios. i am wondering if the base model with the bump up to 64GB ram is needed for RAW video. im fine with the default 32GB RAM as long as it works for FCP or Resolve timelines with 6K RAW. if 64 would make a tremendous difference in fluidity of timeline play head scrubbing etc, then i would opt for 64 but if what i need still works with 32, i see no need in upgrading. i have no need for multiple apps open simultaneously while i am video editing; just the video editor, browser maaaaybe photoshop. also, i Rarely edit RAW video so no need to speed up the process regarding export but rendering speed always appreciated. just unclear how much participation the RAM has in the graphic processes vs the whole "many apps open as the same time" RAM needs.
    thanks for any input!

I heard and agreed with what you said about cleaning up my apps inventory, but I’m wondering if having just another 512GB to future proof would be a sound investment. I’m not rich and will need to pay for the Studio in installments. 😅 and yes, I will still get an external Sandisk SSD for files that don’t need to be on the internal hard drive, i.e. anything I create or download. I'm specing out an M2 MAX Studio and decided I was ok with keeping my cost around $2500 or less. Since I'm a Veteran, I can get 10% off the normal price, so for $2519 I can get the Max Studio and upgrade to the chip with the 38-core GPU (vs the base 30-core) for $180. Then I've decided to upgrade to 64GB memory and 1TB internal SSD. These upgrades, with my vet discount are $360 and $180 respectively. I want to future proof my configuration, so getting a little more than the base model, but not going nuts.

I shoot 4K, edit in 1080 timelines, and do a lot of compositing (graphics to build sports scoreboards on-screen, requiring as many as 8 or 10 layers of text). And of course a fair number of plug-ins. Plus, I typically am working on long-form programs -- 90 to 120 minutes. Am I the type of editor who would not find the base model "enough?"

    Just ordered one, but with a 1 tb drive, but it won't be at the Apple store until late in July. Ended up ordering on line. Unfortunately the people at the local Apple store are not much help with anything. Better off finding answers on line. They were trying to set me up with an Apple card and it kept being rejected because they said they couldn't verify my ID from my NY drivers license, but they neglected to tell me that I could pay with PayPal and it went through on line in about two seconds. The external 4TB drive sounds like a good idea, but will wait until I get my new machine running to look into that. Nice video.

      No way. Way cheaper to just set up a network attached storage. A home server could give you 18-20 TB for the cost of that 4TB upgrade. Trust me the base model is all you need of you learn how to manage external storage.

    • @risingphoenix1484
      @risingphoenix1484 Před rokem +3

      @@ghost-user559 no…. Because if you actually go to a large studio you can’t take a NAS with you, At least you shouldn’t because A NAS should serve as your back up. And I don’t know what cheap NAS / home server you are using. I use business grade Disks and they cost me $500 a pop and my NAS cost me $2000 so I have collectively over 180T collectively my home storage solution cost me $10K. I have 2 laptops 1 is for backup and 1 is for the studio and travel. Those of us who work with real clients in large studios don’t want any hiccups during sessions so you should want at least 4T in a base model laptop especially if you travel.

    • @ghost-user559
      @ghost-user559 Před rokem

      @@risingphoenix1484 If you primarily travel for clients that’s an entirely different situation and then it only makes sense to have the maximum storage. However even then you can easily have a few 4TB external ssd and get away with base model devices for literally thousands less, although you obviously would sacrifice speed slightly. But for most people that makes much more sense to spend a few hundred on external drives with clients work instead of spending thousands extra up front.
      And that gets into whether or not you are carrying a Studio Max or Ultra, which is unnecessary when you can get a M1 Max or Pro in a MacBook Pro, and have a mobile setup for traveling. I personally don’t know if I would risk a 5-8K or more Mac Studio trusting someone else’s security and all my Data with strangers, or even clients, but that’s also a matter of perspective and whether or not you want to risk a loss of a device that is so hard to replace in the current market. Even if you have the money to buy another one immediately, the wait time can be easily be months for certain models. And I also suppose that strongly is dictated by the genre you work in. I know people who worked with Rappers in large studios, and although they brought serious money, I would NEVER bring my equipment to a room full of their “homies” who filter in and out with drugs and strangers and women during a session. If you are working with a certain clientele, bringing your most expensive piece of equipment might not be well advised based upon my experience.
      So all things considered I’m not sure I would carry around my Mac Studio, when I could get a similarly spec MacBook Pro for working in other people’s studios.
      It’s all a matter of perspective. If you are mainly going to trusted clients spaces then you obviously have to have as much storage as possible in general, but it’s just as easy to bring a few large ssd drives or even a large portable HDD at that point?
      But you have to make that judgment call based upon your resources and needs. Most people buying these are not automatically “well established” and money is a much larger consideration than perfection. Meaning most people working with a small studio would generally be better served bringing clients to THEM versus going to the clients location. And at that point why wouldn’t you bring a MOBILE device to a clients studio and plug into their peripherals?
      But in the end it’s the age old debate. Obviously if money is no object then anything goes. But for a majority of people who are independent filmmakers or small studios, or even producers with a smaller clientele, it makes less sense to drop thousands on upgrades to storage for your Studio, when you have the option to buy an entire MacBook Pro for the cost of the 4 TB upgrade? I mean 2000$ versus 8000$ is a HUGE difference when external storage is already so portable and cheap. I personally would rather have a Studio AND a MacBook Pro instead, but that just ultimately depends upon a person’s budget and workflow.

      Audio is a completely different animal than video or even graphics. While graphics approaches the requirements of audio, remember…..video and graphics utilize large contiguous files. Audio stores and accesses thousands of small files with address points. Audio can literally destroy a processor. I’ve been doing this since the 8088, and Atari St days. While I’m confident this box is amazing and can really give audio folks the power they need without the giant footprint, saying the base model is all you need without even mentioning audio, shows the lack of understanding the presenter has. Buy what you can afford. It’s all but impossible to upgrade these boxes. Good luck audio brothers and sisters!

As an audio engineer, I can easily peg my Ultra, causing it to stop proceedings, and make it struggle going forward. This is using Pro Tools, but it's the CPU thirsty plugins I'm using that are causing the issues, not Pro Tools itself.
