Nice to see the quick hit from the outside. Not common from FDNY. Hopefully they start using this tactic more often. If done properly it doesn't "push" smoke or fire. What it does do, is drastically cool that room and surrounding areas.

My mornings are spent drinking coffee and watching your videos. Dude you are doing a fantastic job.
Early in my days as a BC, I had one local reporter from a tv station to show up on all of my working fires. I assigned a firefighter to stay with him and allowed him to film as he wanted. He would always provide us with a copy. The investigator loved it.
If needed he would also stay on the scene with the investigator and film the interior.

I'm a little surprised how fast this fire spread. I grew up up the hill from there, and these buildings were rundown and fire ravished for decades, now they have been totally redone with new everything. Steel reinforcement, plaster walls replaced with sheetrock, wiring, plumbing, etc.. Great attack from the FDNY as always. Many thanks to you JJ for getting out there in the freezing cold to film this.

I am disabled now because of severe back trouble. All that being said I am struck by the difficulty encountered by the FDNY working in these multi unit buildings. Most were built without much protection from fire. You men and women are brave and professional and a bit crazy. Be safe and get home after your shift. Thanks.

An exemple at 13:00; Windows are being broken on the 3rd fl while FFs are just under without any eye protection!!! And you may find several other such exemples in that vid. Firefighting sure is a dangerous job, what puzzles me is the number of avoidable accidents. Ask anybody who was hit with a work related injury: What if you had the possibility to wind back the clock, would you wear this ppe???

I don’t understand fire talk. “ without being on air” you mean not wearing a oxygen mask? I watched th FDNY video from the apartment building h where 19 people died and the firefighters were standing in the window in a huge plume of smoke no masks. Which means they were breathing in all that toxic smoke. I couldn’t believe it. I have such a respect for firemen. I would hate for any of them to have breathing issue or lung cancer. It should be mandatory to wear a mask.

    Smoke Signals
As fire burns it requires fuel, heat, and oxygen. Perfect ratio of these and you see very little smoke.
If the fire has plenty of fuel, with lots of heat, but insufficient supply of oxygen, the smoke is more dark and heavy grey. This smoke is created by the breaking down of flammable materials, but it lacks oxygen to have flame. It is this scenario that causes a Backdraft. When oxygen rushes in to that environment with heat and flammable smoke it explodes because the smoke itself is highly flammable.
(It usually puffs in and out like the building was breathing.)
This fuel smoke also can burst into flames as it escapes the building and hits the oxygen rich atmosphere.
Black smoke is generally chemicals plastics paint grease oil etc.
Wood, paper, cardboard etc generally produces a white or light gray smoke.
The white smoke that dissipates quickly, is actually steam... you’ll see it as the firefighters remove the heat and the fire begins to die

When I was a kid the firetruck would show up and slowly find a hydrant and then start going forward as the hoses they packed let out.
Within minutes the three man crew had water flowing, a valve cut off valve so the next hose could be connected and they installed a Y for a second one.
Meanwhile another truck would be doing the same thing at the next hydrant.

It makes you wonder if fires like these start by somebody falling asleep cooking, smoking in bed or an electrical wiring?

It's sad to see an older building like that go up and flames. The older buildings have so much detail look at the detail at the top of the windows they don't make buildings like that anymore
