What a politically incorrect song. Would never fly in today's feminist age.
It's not a song about feminism, per se.
Bad things sometimes give birth to masterpieces. No blues, no jazz without slavery times, only coocooklocks.
I think, more appropriately, cultural appropriation is the issue here.
@@tashianaholt6808 What is culturally appropriated? The fact that Julie knows a song that only African-Americans would know is a subtle plot twist leading to her leaving Cotton Blossom.
That's kind of the point, though. Even when it was written in the mid-20s it was supposed to be a pastiche of a late 1800s song. And then later in the show we see that this philosophy didn't work out so well for either Julie or Magnolia.
