    This song makes me cry every time.
    This movie ending is the ending to end all endings...I don't know much but right now I can think of Casablanca, The Way We Were, and this as the great ones that I happen to know.
    Ava Gardner's Julie happy for them, blowing a kiss but with tearful eyes...as she steps back. Literally steps back.

    It just hit me that the closing scene in this film is the only time Agnes Moorehead actually shows an authentic tender smile in her entire career.

      I believe she does in “Citizen Kane” but you’re probably right.

    This scene always makes me cry, when Julie emerges from the shadows; she's lost her husband, the one man in her life, to racism, and sacrificed her career for Magnolia; but there's nothing but love and tenderness on her face when she sees Magnolia & Gay finally reunited and wishes them well with a kiss. Incredible acting, writing, directing, filming. I sure miss the old romantic musicals.

    Back when we had beautiful music. Compare that to the modern trash like “Hamilton” or “The Greatest Showman” that people fawn over for some reason.

    Great cinematic ending to a great musical. "Old Man River" is my nominee for one of the top 10 greatest American songs. Maybe the greatest. Sadly, the movie careers of both Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson tanked before the end of the 1950s. Neither represented good box office since moviegoers didn't care for actors who could do their own singing.

    I was at Disneyland in California a while ago and there was a Paddle Steamer just like the one in this film. It did a tour of the island and was a very interesting ride. I wondered how it ran so accurately and discovered that it actually ran on a rail attached to the bottom of the lake. The boat itself was called 'The Mark Twain', and I wondered if this was the one they used in this film. Does any body know?

    • @Dexcab
      @Dexcab Před 6 lety +1

      The Cotton Blossom used in the film ran on its own using diesel engines, guided by underwater cables. It was sold for $15,000 at the 1970 MGM auction, and taken to Missouri where it was used as an attraction at the Worlds Of Fun amusement park. It was very unfortunately demolished in 1995 so a new attraction could be built.

    I LOVE this scene. It's heartbreaking yet epic at the same time. Anyone notice though as Ava Gardner walks out at the end...though her face was made up (or rather lack of makeup) to indicate what alcohlicism and depression has done to her, her fingernails are very polished and smooth? haha...I guess back then movie directors weren't as picky about things like that.
