    hi,
yes the oil pump is a mechanical pump. you only get oil pressure after the feed oil system is pressurized. the max oil pressure is set by the pressure check valve. under that you have whatever the pump will pump. at low motor RPM you have very little oil flow and pressure. as the RPMs go up you get more volume which makes more pressure. as the load on the motor goes up you need more of both, that is why you need to upgrade the oiling system. most Harleys have low oil pressure.

Good information! I have a 1958 FL and once the motor warms up the oil light flickers but the hydraulic lifters are staying pumped up. Another upgrade that can be done to the older motors is to use the 1973 (I believe '73) pinion shaft/pump shaft drive gears. The pinion gear has one more helical tooth and the pump drive gear has one less tooth - it speeds up the pump a little. I may get that longer spring and put it in but I'm not really worried about the oil light coming on, like I say - the lifters are staying pumped up.
    Love your videos!

don't know if the spring will really do anything but i use the later drive gears in all of my builds.

I have the same pump on my 59' Pan, i got a Relief Valve kit from V-Twin Kit #37-8946 like the one at 9:00 min and it came with the Plug, Spring & Valve BUT also with a Ball like a CHECK-BALL.
Is that Check-Ball used for something else ??

I'm able to remove and replace an oil pump, it's through your knowledge I'm able to understand it's function, so, is this upgrade how that other oil pump is supposed to be better for improved oil and pressure. Their pumps are smooth blocks of billet, can't remember them by name.

Excellent tech article, but the camera is so close it's hard to associate the different things you are describing.

its hard to tell that when you are videoing. takes practice like anything else you do.

my pump body is stripped out where the big nuts screws in. Any fixes or is the body pooched? Thanks

like most things, it can be helicoiled. another good body would be the best.

So the oil pump really isnt a mechanical pump? Looks like the oil is pressure fed. No?

Isn't there a gear case oil passage modification that needs to be done when running an end oiling pinion shaft?
The stock passage (in the case cover) aligns with the side hole in the shaft. I would think the case passage
would need to be modified to feed the end? I'm running an end oiler, but I didn't do the machine work.

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  Před 4 lety

you need to cut the oil flow or limit it to the crank at low rpm or it will take all the oil. that is what the stock side oil hole does in the pinion bushing.

@@TatroMachine Yeah, I'm hip to why the .090 orifice is installed. What I'm saying/asking is: by going with an end oiler the stock
oil passage (for side oiling) would need to be modified to feed at the end, not side, right?

hey man i need that tighter spring....for some of my work....but can"t find that spring ....can"t figure out in which engines/things this spring is used...where can i get that please

if its the heavier spring that is a 1983-91 pressure spring. most aftermarket oil pumps use this spring. don't use this spring on older pumps. you might not get any oil to the lowerend.

don't know what you mean. springs are rated by tension, not tight or flexible.
the heaver one is 1983-91 and they get lighter as they get older.

"you only get oil pressure after the feed oil system is pressurized."
It cannot be pressurized when running solids. The oil system DEPENDS on having hydraulic valve train to push the pushrod up into rocker cup where the oil comes out maintaining pressure.

Boy these things are primitive. Thank goodness for Honda or we would all still be working on these old wrecks. The newer HD's 2018's are still not any better.
