Applications for 2024-25 are now open: www.ralston.ac/humanities-ma
Ralston College’s MA in the Humanities charts their course through Western civilization, from the Greek world of Homer, to Ancient Rome and Medieval Europe, into the Renaissance and up to our modern era. The setting of our four terms parallels this arc by beginning in Greece and then moving to Savannah, Georgia. The curriculum unites the most profound and provocative works of literature, philosophy, and art, inspiring and challenging students to approach the human condition with fresh eyes. Yet to cover this ground in a single year of intense intellectual study requires careful steering and selection. For 2024-25, that focus will be provided by the theme of “Nature”: our multidisciplinary curriculum will trace the origins and development of this concept through philosophy, music, architecture, art, and literature.

As a Greek i feel very thankful that the Greek medieval message has reached the other side of the world. For too long the Byzantine history and philosophy was considered oriental and mysticism. I am very happy that it has reached people in the usa and they are now contributing to the discussion. Thanks for visiting Greece Jonathan and thanks for spreading the message.

Welcome to Greece Jonathan and Jordan! Welcome to the pillar of the Orthodox Christianity. I suggest also to visit Osios Loukas Viotias the 11th century monastery. But there are so many places here in Greece where you can experience the essence of the true faith. I hope many people come to the Orthodoxy because of your contribution.

I went to Meteora in highschool on excursion with my class, since my country is near Greece. We were young kids and I knew almost nothing about Christianity ( although I was baptized in Ortodox Church as a baby). You dreamed to come to that place for 20 years. I was there 20 years ago completely unaware of everything. Took me some time, but here I am now, thank Good 😊

This is so beautiful. As an Orthodox Christian that belongs to the Armenian Apostolic church this touches me so much. Eastern and Oriental Orthodox monasteries are where I find peace and strength. Please visit the Orthodox monasteries in Lebanon, the Levant and MENA regions, in Armenia and the Caucasus - these are geographic regions fraught with conflict - completely misunderstood, with Christians whose everyday struggles are ignored/overlooked. May God bless you, guard you, and guide you in all your endeavors.

Beautiful. I've been looking into medieval architecture as a continuity of the classical world. A lot of it is really impressive.. as moderns we have a lot to learn simply from proportion and weaving myth, mathematics, and architecture together. It has an effect on us that is bigger than words, to be sure.
To me, the allure of the classical world of the bronze and iron ages is simply the varied appreciation and all the different temples and coexisting structures that a polytheistic society affords. You see a lot of it still in india, and china before the cultural revolution. You see some of it with monotheistic western societies too, but when I look back at ancient egypt I see in many ways a lost role model for the role, power, and proportional relationship of technae in our world. So many temples withering in the sand, forgotten faces etched in stone.

The Christian traditions that have monasteries and venerate saints also seem to be conscious of a historical connection to the Gospels in a way that the modern churches do not. Hopefully I am baptised one day, but for now I love attending a divine liturgy that echos back two thousand years and more. For modern people like me (I was raised on scientific atheism) there are many strange things about the ancient church that could be stumbling blocks (icons, relics, fasting, long prayers haha) but a more useful way to view these things is to learn why these traditions arise and why it is important to continue them.

Well done brother on your video and views, one small correction, monasticism did not start at Meteora due to the Ottomans. It started around the 9th century AD, as unorganised people living in caves and small dwellings and then we have the first (known) monastery built around the 12th century AD. Thessaly was not occupied by Turks for another 200 years at least.
People went up to the Meteora mountains which literally means 'suspended' in Greek because it is a magnificient place suspended in between God and the world. As you rightly said, they wanted to give themselves literally up to God and by their prayers to save not only themselves but the world beneath them as well, out of Love, as our Lord offered his life up on the Cross, out of Love, for our sins. Christ was suspended up on the Cross, He was the first example.

as the u.s. calvary chased black elk and his people around the dakotas, he sat on a hill and said something to the effect of, no matter where you are you are at the center, the omphalos, the navel of the world, the most sacred place in the universe. it is plato's perfect form, it is the kaaba, sometimes referred to as al-Ka'ba al-Musharrafa, any temple anywhere on the planet, stonehenge, a mound, a high place, a pyramid, the empire state building, washington's monument, the hearth in every home, at a bbq, at a circle of hippies passing a joint around, smoking a peace pipe, a bedtime story with your child, a bench that you sit on, sleep on and call home, thus spoke Zarathustra.

That's where they got the title name from for that album. Literally. Visiting Meteora, or I believe they said they passed by and saw it and actually did not have time to stop and visit. They talk about it in one of the video interviews on CZcams. Meteora literally means between heaven and earth. Etymology: derived from a ancient and modern Greek contraction meaning “suspended in the air.” / Derived from the ancient Greek word metéōros, meaning “raised from the ground, hanging, lofty, "elevated", and is etymologically related to meteor- , "suspended rocks", cliffs/ mountain tops, "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above". I do think of Chester Bennington from time to time. I saw Linkin Park live in Athens, at the terra vibe music festival. There was a young man in front of me, handsome, long bushy brown hair in a low ponytail, eyes closed, standing there in the grass, singing all of the song verses by heart. When I think of Chester Bennington now, the image of that young man pops into my head, also.
