- An introduction to Christian Monasticism. Don’t stop here though! This is like introducing a continent of beauty and truth. There are so many wonderful monastic saints and writers to explore. Also recommended: visit an Orthodox monastery and chat about life, faith, and anything you might hear on Patristix.

One thing that you missed to mention is that the liturgy of the Orthodox Church, the whole way we worship, comes directly from the monastic practices of the monastery of Mar Sabbas next to Bethlehem in Palestine. Monasteries are so central in the Orthodox Church that without them our worship would look very much different.
And the plethora of hymnography that has been produced by saints such as Ss. John of Damascus, Kassiani, and Joseph the Hymnographer.
It can be said that when the west began to focus on the seminary/academy/university is when it lost the spirit of the east where the focus and teachings were/are always centered around the monasteries.
Interesting
@@NavelOrangeGazerThe Scholastic Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for Western Christendom.
I was baptized and Chrismated in the Church last year on Pentecost, and just went on my first pilgrimage with my parish to Holy Cross Monastery in West Virginia. What a blessing it was. All of the preconceptions I had about monks being cold and standoffish were quickly dispelled. Every father I met there was so warm and welcoming, and full of God's love!
Monks are so often just the friendliest and nicest people!
❤️☦️ St. Elizabeth the New Martyr, pray for us.
You somehow knew all the myths I had in my head about monks. Thanks for helping me appreciate their ministry
My grandfather was a modern monk. When he passed and I saw the thousands of people that came to show respects...his benevolence touched so many.
What do you mean by "modern monk"?
@@daydreamer1159He means a monk in modern times…? That feels clear.
This channel is a breath of fresh air. God Bless.
Thank you for watching and your kind words!
Agree!
Great job guys. A strong comeback!
Cheers, mate!
We can learn so much from monks.. many monks became Saints.. the Jesus Prayer for example or Ascetic Lifestyle.. Fasting.. Watchfullnuess and so on.. Monks play an important Role in Orthodoxy 🥰
You're back!
Happy that you are back. May God help you in all your good deeds ☦️
Another great episode. Glad you're back and feeling better!
Thanks so much! On the mend, still a little way to go, but thankfully able to do a bit more filming
THANK YOU so much! I've been recently struggling with monastisism in lieu of my new-age background. This cleared up a lot, truly greatful! 👍 🎉
Since being received into the Syriac Orthodox Church, I have found a spiritual father in a Coptic monk at a monastery in Germany. It has been the greatest blessing from our Lord to me as this monk prayerfully supports and guides my walk with Jesus almost daily.
😊😊v
One cannot sufficiently thank you for your video. Having been partially raised in Europe, I saw the outstanding accomplishments of the various monastic houses. In returning to the USA and hearing bizarre stories & flagrant lies, I defended the houses - and, I was a liberal protestant. One was amazed in college to find professors spitting out the same & they just couldn't understand how I could defend them. Later, after entering a Benedictine house, I grew in love with the hours and have continued with them since 2005. It's my strong desire that your channel continues and is markedly successful. Pax
I could never be a monk but I appreciate that they are there. We owe much to monks.
New video! Glad you're all doing well
On the mend, we believe!
@@Patristix Praying for you all 🙏
Very helpful. Thanks friend 🙏
I hope you manage to visit the Dečani monastery in Serbia 🇷🇸
Those monks' voices are incredible.
I spent a week in the monastery (Mount Saviour Monastery) and it was very nice to participate in the life of a monk. I enjoyed their life and what they do.
Hope you all get better, God bless!
Thank you. God bless.
Good to see you back at it! God bless you and yours!
I am happy seeing you make videos again. May God grant you continued health abd grant you many years!!
Thank you so much!
@@Patristix You are so welcome
Well done. Well done.
Bless you and thank you🌸
God bless you
Beautiful ☦️Thank you my brother in Christ ☦️☦️☦️
Although I deeply love my family, I wish I would have known more about monastic life during my high school/college years. It definitely would have been a route I would have attempted to discern.
Even with a family it is well worth visiting an Orthodox monastery. A lot can be gained there about Orthodoxy, life, and prayer. We grew up visiting the monasteries. A visit can be a real spiritual help! Recommended.
@@Patristix How do you find them? I live in Canada
Look up the Holy Monastery of Panagia Parigoritissa in Quebec and the Holy Monastery of St. Kosmas Aitolos in Ontario. Both were founded by Elder Ephraim of Arizona.
I'm currently listening to a podcast show called "The History of the Early Church" & the next episode I'll dive into will be about St Anthony the Great!!
Thank you for the history.
This channel is awesome!!!
O Holy and Venerable Anthony of Egypt and the Holy and Venerable Elders of the Optina monastery pray for me a sinner!!
This channel is so underrated!. I hope more Christians get you in their recommendations ❤
More monasteries plz!
There’s such a lack of coverage on such a fascinating subject.
beautiful!
beautiful
Just come across your channel! So advanced and beautiful explanation! And very nicely performed. Wish you good luck! And I am very pleased to get to know that people around the world are familiar with nowadays saints as St. Porphirious from Mount Athos! Glory be to God! Blessings!
Thank you, sister! Very much appreciate your kind words.
And yes, Saint Porphirios is a wonderful saint to know!

I was trying to figure out my saint Sunday evening, knowing I’m being baptized in a month. It’s been over a year of trying to figure it out, maybe two.
I think I found her last night, Monday, St Marina the Monk.
And now your video on monasticism pops up, Tuesday.
Just kinda funny.
Wonder what’s tomorrow 🫣
Saint Marina is a very cool saint! God bless you this next month before the big day!
Marktopi monastery in Georgia (outside of Tbilisi) has a section of their grounds for men who are former prison convicts who cannot get work because of their felon status. So they live and work at the monastery and are able to be fed and have community.
Beautiful!
Been there on pilgrimage. Loved the monastery, the monks and St Anthony the iconographer!
The monks at my parish are some of the nicest people I’ve met and now a days I consider them my only friends after leaving behind my old life, without them I don’t know if I’d of come home to orthodoxy and stayed in the faith
Coincidentally (there are no such things), as I was walking in the pouring rain of yesterday's evening, my meditation brought me to the thought that I am a monk without a monastery: a monk of the margin. I went for my daily evening walk in a swiming suit and sandals, at 8PM, for an hour and a half, recitating the prayer of the heart disturbed by meditation. God bless.
❤
I'm a recent catechumen, weighing the options of marriage and monasticism. They are both very beautiful. I think I should finish my catechism before even thinking about committing to either of them, so I still have a couple of years, but at this time I'm not sure how I could ever choose one over the other. Perhaps it will end up being a calling, rather than a choice.
Glad to hear you're a catechumen! Welcome to the journey, may God bless you!
@@Patristix Thank you! And thank you so much for your part in that! Your video on the Mother of God was my first step in discovering Orthodoxy!
I remember those comments. Very honoured to know our videos helped!
As one who has worked the path of discernment between these two paths and is about to make the big move to live out my choice the best guidance I can give you is this. For now focus on the path of catechism to develop a manageable balanced prayer life, I know there is a temptation to go all in with everything but follow the guidance of your priest of a simple rule you can do now and keep doing, this can be expanded over time as you grow spiritually. Be involved in your parish and make friends of your own age of both genders this will help you with the process of recognising which path you are called to, it is also worth visiting monasteries and meeting real monastics, many parishes run organised pilgrimage or can link you up with your local monasteries. As one abbot I know well says you know in yourself which way you are called (it is just a matter of recognising it with your spiritual father) the discernment) is who to marry or which monastery to join.
You may also find it helpful to watch video by monastics on their way of life and on church things more generally, a good channel for both of those is Mull Monestery.
"When you start to pray for others, the heaven intercedes for you"
What do you mean by several? 😂 Monk here watching you. I think that a lot of them saw this. Great Work. Already a subscriber. Fantastic channel
Thank you so much!
Hi. I am a new Christian and stumbled across your channel. It’s awesome.
You have an interesting accent. Where are you from?

St Anthony the Great and St Hilarion the Great, pray to Christ for us!
Whenever I think of monasticism, I think of The Brothers Karamazov, where Dostoyevsky calls the monk's life the "all or nothing" life, devoting oneself fully to God.
How about some Lemon Balm tea??? Very tasty chap. No sourness. Added with regular southern sweet tea, its quite delightful.
This sounds very good and we will find it!
I love monk and nun liquors. You can taste the lore
Hello guys, I have a quick question. I want to become a monk but don't know where to start or what to do. Anyone think they could help me?

Can anyone tell me what the monks of the St. George Monastery in Jerusalem are doing in their recent video? They have a red pillar shaped object which they unpackage, rub with a red solution and repackage. There are no comments and there is no info on Google. It seems a really strange and unchristian ritual.

Can a priest who's wife past become a monk?
It has happened, yes
A widowed priest must remain celibate and many once their children are grown take monastic vows, some even become bishops. A well known example is St Luke of Crimea who lived and suffered under the Soviets.
English society started its decline the day English king forcefully disbanded monasteries.
Absolutely.
