  • The Sig Sauer 716 is a piston driven AR that is chambered in 7.62X51. I was really excited about shooting this gun and having the rifle fill in for a designated marksman rifle in my collection.

My 716 is a tank. I've never had a feed or extraction failure. When it's time to clean, I'm always struck with the thought, "Did I shoot this gun?" Gotta love the piston system.

I Was Fortunate Enough To Check Out The Sig Sauer 716 DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle) And The 716 Patrol, The DMR Is Heavier Without The Iron Sights Or Bi-Pod Installed, The Barrel On The DMR Is 18" And Is A Heavy Match Grade And Appears Thicker, The Hand Guard Is Also Longer, It Has A Magpul PRS (Precision Rifle/ Sniper) Stock And A Geissele 2 Stage Match Trigger. This Gun Is A Sub Minute Of Angle (MOA) With .75 (3/4") Groups At 100 Meters (328"). In My Opinion This Is A Great Gun For Designated Bench Rest Or Bi-pod Use, Weight Does not Bother Me For This. Like Comparing A Car And A Truck - Each has A Specific Use. The Car Cannot Haul Like The Truck, The Truck Cannot Get The Fuel Mileage Like The Car! These Are Both Great Guns.

i can't hate on anyone that likes firearms.
what i don't like is when people complain about weight.

I have a 716 as well. My gun is great with a Geissele SSA trigger. I get less than 1" groups with 165 grn. HPBT hand loads. My 716 never has had a failure to feed or eject. Just a slight dent in brass during ejection. The weight really doesn't bother me with this gun or I wouldn't have purchased it. I love the gun, 100% reliable so far but I clean and lube mine thoroughly especially out of the box.

Thanks for the review. I just got one to complement my 20" LWRC REPR. In my sample, while the stock trigger is heavy, it isn't overly so and it doesn't have the issues of creep or over travel. As my REPR has most of the bells and whistles, I plan on leaving mine fairly stock with a 4x or 1x4 scope.

Very good review. I agree, the Sig 716 is a heavy rifle, even for an AR-10. They are making AR-10s lighter now. The bulky quadrail is a bit much for my taste. But the quality of Sig Sauer is top notch, and the price point for a piston AR in 308 caliber, makes this a good rifle. I paid $1750 from an online gun store a few years ago. I also agree that the trigger was pretty bad. I too went with the Geissele SSA trigger. Well worth it. I think we have the same scope. The Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32. I went with a Magpul ACS-L stock, PWS PS30 muzzle device, and an Atlas bipod (which I noticed you recommended). I am not a marksman and get about 2 MOA with cheap target ammo. A shame that 308 and 7.62 NATO ammo is so damned expensive. Funny thing is, I splurged on a box of fancy Hornady TAP ammo once, and I was still only getting 2 MOA. Go figure. I live in a heavily wooded area in the Pacific NW, so I rarely have an opportunity to stretch it out beyond 200 yards anyway. For me, it's a real blast to have a 16 inch barrel AR with that kind of power even for medium and close range in the woods. Never had a malfunction with maybe 1500 rounds through it in 3 years. Recoil is fairly light because it's a little heavy and the PWS compensator. Just don't stand too close on my side or you will experience the thunder. A suppressor would make this rifle the complete package for me.

Good review on the 716. I have a 716 patrol rifle. Like others have stated, the trigger is garbage. I actually put in a CMC flat trigger with a 3 1/2 pound trigger pull. It's a great drop in replacement. My rifle eats ammunition with no problem. However, it does scratch the bullet service a little bit. It probably needs a break in a little bit more from what I've been reading. The only other comment I'll make a reference to the video, is that you mentioned scar 16 being a 308. The scar 17 is the 308 version.

The rifle is a little heavy, the trigger could be better but I am getting 2 inch groups at 100 yards I put a Lucid red dot with a 2X. This past deer season took one at 100 yards and one at 150 the 308 dropped them both like a rock. Rifle as I said a little heavy but for stand hunting excellent. I may put a scope on it this summer for shooting the 600 yard range.

I have the 16" Patrol version and have installed a Rock River 2-stage trigger and 4-12x Nikon. It shoots sub-moa with almost every handload. I would try shooting off of a good rest instead of the bipod as an experiment. If I was hauling a rifle up/down mountains, would not use this. I just walk to a tree stand and go up. The weight does dampen any shakes.

    nice review. good info.
i dont mind when manufacturers give us basic mil-spec triggers even in higher end models because triggers are very personal things. very subjective things.
we all have our favorites or preferred triggers and i dont want to pay $200 for a trigger that i dont want. id rather the rifle come with a $30 mil-spec trigger that i can easily replace with the trigger i want. or do what S&W does and produce a really nice enhanced mil-spec trigger at a very modest cost increase.
or use a ALG ACT. i have 2 of them and while not the best by far, i can be perfectly content with it. i even have one in my amazing FN 18" match grade sporter SPR. i traded the excellent Timney it came with to a buddy and installed the ACT with the intentions of replacing it with a Geiselle or Lantac/CMC etc but im still happy with it.
ditto for muzzle devices. unless the manufacturer has developed a very effective device, just put an inexpensive A2 birdcage on it and ill replace it with my favorite muzzle device later. no sense in wasting money on something i may not like.
and the same can be said of the grip and stock and even the handguard in many instances.i just dont mind receiving a new rifle with an A2 grip and basic M4 style stock because thats another maybe $50 saved that isnt tacked on to the price. maybe $250 if you include a handguard.
between those 4 or 5 items thats a potential cost reduction of up to $400 to $600 the manufacturer doesnt tack on to the price.
and i can replace the stock parts as im able to.
imagine if that Sig 716 came with all basic parts, for $1600 !
you simply add your favorite kit and rock on. no sticker shock upon purchase and no money wasted on equipment you dont like.

Sig is superior in both rifles and pistols. The .308 is naturally going to be a heavier rifle than the .223. To me the extra weight helps off set the recoil. The complaint on the shot placement might be attributed to maybe a barrel that has gotten a little overheated, shooter error or poor ammunition quality. Try the .308 Remington premier match 165 grain Sierra MatchKing hollow point round. It's a bit pricey for plinking rounds, but there are spot on when it comes to performance.

It will do a lot better than that. Get the Hiperfire 24C installed and fix the trigger issue once and for all. Then score a limbsaver slip on pad. It will fit on an inch or so. Razor blade the bottom of cup beyond where it grips, to in line with your stock. Still needs to come off to clean the debris. It will be a godsend on the follow up shots. Next research your ammo. Cheap and mid line ammo is fine for tin cans. You want groups so pay the piper on top end hornady, or work even higher end handloads. Last, you need to dominate the F* outta that bang stick. Rewind the vid. You are focusing on the sight pic and going floppy on your control. You can clearly see it in the way the bullet is trying to spin the barrel and rocking it to the side. I had a craptastic bipod like that one. yep get a good one. Force the weapon down to the table and counter the twist and rock with opposing force. It will be very easy to film and make the corrections at the table. when you get into the dirt and brush, you will already be trained to dominate it. Keep filming from the rear like you did and then you can see what to work on. Each of those will tighten up the groups some. All together....lots.

    SUJAN DUTTA

The fast-track procurement process for the rifles has not yet been finalised, and will likely be pushed back to April next year.
New Delhi: A rifle made by US-based SiG Sauer, the SiG 716, could well be the replacement for the Indian Army’s INSAS, after it emerged as the lowest bidder last week in a tender for standard-issue assault rifles.
The Army had issued a tender in February to buy 72,000 assault rifles, the primary weapon of the soldier in the frontlines, and 94,000 carbines through a ‘fast-track procedure’.
“But the procurement process is still being refined,” a defence ministry source told ThePrint.

You can, I have in my Patrol 1st Gen But be careful I ran some cheap Tula but I have gotten some bad batches where the end where the primer is at gets ripped off completely like if i got a can opener and cut it lol, While the rest of the casing is inside causing a double feed then you fire the double feed(if you're not paying attention to your spend casing) since the bcg didn't close all the way all the pressure is released to the mag. It blew the bottom of my AIC metal mags off from the pressure including the rest of the unfired ammo, It scared the shit out of me the first time ( yes the first lol) I was afraid i had blown off my hand lol then with that extra force pushing in the first casing and jamming it more, well it took me a while taking off that casing while trying not to scratch my barrel. And before anyone says my gas setting was on high, It wasn't. I've never had a problem with any brass ammo.
So..... try it but be careful!

Heavy amo but if it takes three shots for 5.56 and one shot for 7.62 you need only one third the amount of amo with match grade amo more accuracy out to longer distance DMR keeps them far away. Sig Sauer 716 Patrol for CQ better chance of going thru armor. My choice would be Sig Sauer 716 DMR.

OFB 7.62×51 is batter than this, India should order that instead of importing.

If it were me I’d prefer to shoot watermelons with a scope mounted .308 rifle from inside 5 yards, instead of the 10 yards you were shooting them from. 10 yards is just too far out for what I’m comfortable with.

    Sig 716 is NOT Mil-Spec
Sig Sauer has it's own bule print.

    Yes the weight sucks but
Man the fuck up and pull your weight!!!
Cause when the bullet's start flying
The 716 patrol is what you want to have. When you hit your target with a 308 round they go down Fast
One and Done. unlike the 556 or AK. The ONLY true problem with the 716 is it's not mil-Spec. But still in my opinion the best Battle rifle out.

This is a horrible attempt to copy the HK MR762. It took SIG three generations to get things somewhat corrected.

Yeah, but 716 passed the "Over the Beach Test" HK Models failed.
I also like when guns are heavy and solid, dont mind the weight. I love that gun.

he said dmr varient or w/e in beginning but it certainly looks like the patrol version ...needs longer barrel/handguard so I think it was just him calling it a dmr..

Normally if 1 round is off from the rest of the group it's user error or ammo I've seen videos of what this gun is really capable of with good ammo and being rested and it's capable of groups at less than 1 MOA
