Losing Weight - Why is it so Difficult ? | Andrew Hogan | TEDxUCD

  • Speaking after his TEDxUCD 2016 talk Dr Andrew Hogan said, “Obesity is a national epidemic and is responsible for 4,000 deaths per year in Ireland. One in four Irish adults are obese and only three in ten are registering a healthy bodyweight. More concerning is the fact that one in five Irish children are now overweight or obese and international studies have shown that obese children have an 82% chance of becoming obese adults. As a result it is predicted that the current generation of children will have a lower life expectancy than their parents as obesity causes numerous diseases including heart disease and cancer.”
    “As I outlined in my TEDxUCD 2016 talk the current solution to the obesity crisis is lifestyle modification, but meta-analysis indicates that weight gain is 90% irreversible for 90% of the population. So the question is why can't we lose weight? Could the immune system be protecting us from weight loss and can it be used in the fight against obesity?”
    Andrew is very passionate about childhood obesity and is keen to raise awareness of the problem and the imperative for prevention. His research focuses on the impact of obesity on the immune system and the role of the immune system in controlling bodyweight.
    In 2009 he was awarded a Newman Fellowship with the Obesity Immunology Research Group to investigate the impact of obesity on the immune system. In 2012 Andrew received a Senior Research Fellowship from the National Children’s Research Centre to investigate if childhood obesity negatively impacts the immune system.
    Andrew graduated with a BSc (Biology) from Maynooth University before undertaking his PhD there investigating the crosstalk between immune cells, with the aim of harnessing the immune system for novel therapies against cancer.

    I've been practicing the Japanese method of only eating until I'm 80% full and so far it's worked really well for me.

    Here's what I'd suggest when it comes to losing weight from what I've learned from losing some weight more recently. Number one would be to exercise until you sweat and get a headrush every day ans then some. Number two would be to eat two meals a day before 6 and dont eat until you're full but instead eat only until you stop having hunger pains or a growling stomach. Number three would be just cut out all added sugar and bread. Number 4 would be don't count calories but instead just eat a fixed meal that is small.

    Why is it the government’s responsibility to keep people from eating too many carbohydrates?

      The problem has grown to be as big and as difficult to turn around as it has because it inherently stems from issues with our society and our culture, which the government has a leadership role in.

      Simple economics, the food industry wants you to consume as much as possible so makes food more and more addictive but this has a negative externality of making people unhealthy. Therefore simple solution, you tax the food (the junk calorie rich, nutritionally empty variety) to make people consume less of it and raise tax revenue to pay for the treatment of people who consume it anyway. Same as cigarettes.

    Come on... brag brag brag about being the biggest. Get over yourself. America says "hold my beer" (while I down this cheeseburger). Speaking of cheeseburgers... at least in the USA, the first sign of possible progress on this problem will be McDonald's closing restaurants instead of opening new ones. Not to pick on them, but it's true.

    Hi @andrew hogan this is what I thought it should help me lose weight. However I end up having thyroid cancer in the process of doing exactly what you said. I was intermittent fasting 18:6 eating healthy such as soups etc that meets 1200 - 1500kcal per day, working out 4-6 times a week. Junking two meals once a week when I was in my perfect health and desired weight. I was diagnosed with cancer. Now I do not know which is true and which is not and I have no doctors clarifying this to me 😢. I’m commenting here so someone can help me understand that what is true. But one thing for sure, what u said works to lose weight but it ended up giving me cancer

    • @Ashley-cr4ow
      @Ashley-cr4ow Před 3 lety +34

      No it’s not, it’s like the worst. Screw keto all you lose is water weight, then you eat a bagel and “gain” 20 pounds. Not only that it’s also extremely restrictive so once you fail which you will, YOU’RE going to become a binge eater and put on the weight you lost plus more. The only way to lose weight sustainably is to count calories, walk or get in any type of exercise and eat more protein and fibre. Protein preserves the lean muscle and makes you feel more full, and fibre helps with digestion and makes you feel more full. Also drinking water because it puts something in your stomach, and getting enough sleep so your hunger hormones aren’t out of whack.
