- What if nonfat foods are actually making us less likely to lose weight? Neuroscientist Krzysztof Czaja's research focuses on obesity and finding no-surgical ways to overcome it. What his research has uncovered so far will surprise you. Krzysztof Czaja’s obesity research focuses on changes in the human brain following a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. His lab at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia is investigating the role of neural gut-brain communication in the development of obesity with the goal of finding non-surgical ways to overcome it. His work has been featured in Science 2.0, ScienceDaily, and Quartz. Krzysztof, an associate professor at UGA’s Department of Veterinary Biosciences & Diagnostic Imaging, has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed research papers and several book chapters. He holds a D.V.M. from the Veterinary Medicine College at the Academy of Agriculture and Technology in Olsztyn, Poland and a doctorate in neuroanatomy from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Watch in 1.25x to make him sound normal
Whahahahaha
OMG THANK YOU! (a friend sent vid so I was painfully watching this out of respect but now at 1.25x its a bit more bearable LOLOLOL)
Thank you ❤️

I'm from NY, I watch everything on 1.25.....or 1.5
Thank you for this research. It makes a LOT of sense. I think that since English is his second language I caught more information in the way he said it. Thank you so much!
True
I'm a huge fan of flexible, balanced, realistic diets
Great content! Very informative and relatable.
I needed this video.. thank you!!
This is a good lecture--worth watching to the end!
Bardzo dziekuje to co yten Pan powiedzialotworzylo mi oczy na to co powinnam jesc inie bede sie juz wahala
Very interesting! Many people say to "limit sugar", but can't give us the peek inside the body that he does. It's very motivating to see (among other things) the scientifically demonstrated cycle of sugar intake--> toxic gut bacteria--> gut inflammation--> leaky gut--> fatty liver--> more obesity. His voice is almost hypnotically calming but it's well worth making the effort to really pay attention. Thank you for this video!
I kind of always knew this just be learning from my body. Everytime I'd eat sugar my stomach would just be terrible and the next day I'd feel awful, perform awful, and my bowels would be awful. Not with normal amounts of sugar in food like fruits and what not, but with added processed sugars like in cookies and cakes and donuts.
@@adamj3977 Are you a young person? I don't want to assume, but a lot of people can "eat whatever they want" until around age 40. We've evolved to stay healthy long enough to have children and help our children have children. But beyond that, evolution doesn't care if we live or die so we have to put more effort into staying healthy 😄
@@adamj3977 Nice--sounds great. When you start getting closer to forty, think about upping your nutrition so that you can continue to be super active for your whole life 👍
@@adamj3977 Lol "the food of the gods"! Can't blame you! 😀
It's not about what you eat, it's about the how, when and the why. Listen to your gut and to your hunger, and to your gut and hunger only. Make concious decisions: "What do i want to eat? What do i crave?". Learn to listen to your hunger and stop if you are not hungry anymore. Don't eat if you are not hungry.
I eat a fair amount of sugar, but my weight remains the same.
The dose makes the posion so good.
Truth Be Told .... Awesome
Note to self: "Instead of counting every calorie you eat, count every gram of added sugar."
I really didn't take note of this before. I am going to try this and see if it works.
173 to 119 due to Keto lifestyle!
No hunger, no cravings.
Feel half my 65 years.

I can confirm that fructose including fruit makes me eat more. Unfortunately avoid it 100% is not enough to make me lose weight.
Perfect timing for Thanksgiving!
maybe the sugar consumption is declining in the pure form, but it's in everything else, so those numbers are not correct
"While sugar is necessary for a healthy life and the consumption trend is going in the right direction, we still consume more than the recommended amount of added sugar (6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men while average americans consume 23 teaspoons per day) instead of counting every calorie you eat count every gram of added sugar". -Krzysztof czaja-
This is what opened my eyes thank You
The closed captions on this video are terrible. Information is very good on the studies.
Quantities of food have also risen significantly since the 1950s when most people were slim and we also move around much less.
Would love to read more on this. So, if we begin counting grams of sugar vs. calories, will our neuro-gut connection heal? Or has the damage already been done?
Good question!! Did you find anything about it?
@@emba76 pretty sure it heals...youtube Dr. Robert Lustig...
11:57 - Correlation, not necessarily causation.
If the correlation is high enough then controlling one parameter will reflect on the other parameter as well.
Awesome!

Now he does
I saw the title and couldn't hit faster.
nothing new here
sugar is necessary??? uh...not. Where is it written that there are things called Essential sugars or Essential Carbs....nowhere? The body makes all the sugar that the brain needs whether we eat it or not, in the liver.
Yowsa. Have had about 10 grams off added sugar a day for nearly two years now. Even six teaspoons a day sounds like too much! Think of all those eons humans lived with NO added sugar.
Diets fail because people dont maintain them in the long term. Fitness is a lifestyle.
Can you eat rice and potatoes? They are low in sugar. I've always heard they turn to sugar after you eat them. Thoughts?
All carbs are turned into sugar once digested be it skittles, OJ, Potatoes or rice. The rate at which this happens depends on the type of carb and fiber content. Rice and potatoes are relatively slower digesting but your individualized recommended intake of carbs will dictate how much you can eat. A diabetic can eat fast digesting carbs but a smaller amount with more slower digesting carbs while maybe athlete would be better to eat a higher relative proportion of fast digesting carbs mixed with some slow digesting carbs due to the demands of their exercise regime, its all context specific. Ask your doctor or local health professional for your own specific guidelines, CZcams is the wild west. GL.
Ross Dempsey I am assuming then that this includes Fruits.
@@aprils.6816 Yes, they're made up of a higher amount of fiber however. Fiber goes undigested through the body making fruit and high fiber foods healthier options in general.
Great talk; well explained, clear and informative. Thank you!
Margie Dougan you heard right
His point is they less calories but more unhealthy stuff causing their gut to blow out of proprotion.
why are so many people who know this, and those in the low carb community overweight still? i cant take them
seriously.
I assume he means white sugar, not natural “sugar” found in fruits.
This is the problem he didn't take position but i think that we can't mix meat and sugar even from fruits because it caused a bad change in stomach bakterias
I should lay off sugar cubes.
"95% of diets fail" needs to be amended to "95% of people who lose weight put back it on". The diet actually works, it's the person who fails to adhere to it long term that's the "failure". People think that as soon as they reach their ideal fitness level and weight goal, they can just click "save" and go back to how they were eating & exercising before their diet. Another issue is that these individuals don't pick diets that they can adhere to long term. The best diet is the one which you can maintain for the rest of your life.
Most diets aren't even healthy in the long-term, so they are not even suited for that.
And that point he is talking about-decreasing sugar we are able to stick to diet which works
I don't want no diet Diet is something you can't force on me
I think you 13 and you don't know what you want to say Think twice😄
We don't need ANY sugar to be healthy.
Unfortunately you are right but it is very hard to understand by people who are addicted from childhood
It's Drew from Despicable me!

Keto is not worth it imo. It's risky and tough to stick with. I recommend the *Agoge diet* because it's personalized and diverse and most importantly worked great for me.
I'm doing keto with intermittent fasting and I'm finding it easy. For the first time I'm not hungry and not craving anything.
I hear Agoge diet mentioned in every comment section regarding diet. However when I search Agoge, there is practically no information on it 🤷♂️
