Larsen’s is the creator who I’ve read the most of work from. I have almost the entire run of Dragon. He was what got me into Kirby and Simonson. His work is a big part of why I make comics myself.

This is GREAT! I've been onboard with THE SAVAGE DRAGON since 1992 and am awaiting #248 releasing soon. Erik Larsen always delivers a crazy comic ride each issue.👍👍🍻

Although it is surprising that Erik says he has never really thought of himself as a big influence on people as a "DIY/you can make your own book now!" it makes sense because he is one the Ultimate "put my head down and get it done" creators ever. He is only focused on what he is doing. He is committed to Dragon and whatever other work he is choosing to pick up at the given time. Day after day, week after week, year after year, with changes all around him he keeps doing what he has always done, finishing the comic above anything else, even while the entire comic industry chnged around him he STILL kept course. And that certainly isn't a bad thing, it's a level of commitment that few can match. It's "this is what it takes to do it, and I keep doing it until I no longer can."

Erik's last comment felt like he was speaking to me. I have a graphic novel, 30 years in the making, that I've never had the time/ability to get completed. Great, great interview, guys!

Man you guys are on a tear! Another amazing interview. Fucking hell, you guys are good.
I've always enjoyed his work, but I don't think I have really appreciated all that he has done. The fact that he's still going strong on Savage Dragon is very impressive.
Highlights of the interview for me:
    * He just fucking changed what he wanted on his early DC work? The balls on the dude! "Yeah, I can do better than this guy"
    * He uses #2 pencils. Wow!
    * All the work he put into printing his own comic and how that lead to his amazing career. I wish I had that drive, commitment and vision at such a young age. Hell, I wish I had it now.
Keep up the great work guys. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all your work and energy.

Interesting hearing him talk about the books Valentino was bringing in. I read so much of that ‘shadow line’ stuff, I had no idea who else was reading it, but it was really interesting stuff to look at as a pre teen...strange comics that seemed to not connect with anyone in particular and felt weirdly powerful because of that.

    • @majorjoe23

Valentino was the publisher at the time, but Larsen gave Kirkman and Cory Walker their first Image book with the Super Patriot: America’s Fighting Force mini series.

Sim did 300 issues with Gerhard helping on backgrounds, McFarlane wrote 300+ issues , drew maybe 20 of them/ inked a lot of them but Larsen is the real deal. I love that guy because he’s always innovating and pushing himself and has none of the hype for his achievements. Just a “show up to work and take care of business” kind of guy. Awesome.
