"What kind of monsters surrounded him?"
Let me introduce you to Thorkell and Askeladd, his only rivals in a 1v1. One overthrew a King, and one is a walking army
And he's an offspring of the strongest lmao
Snake's no slouch either.
Miklagard. Constantinople. Man served as an elite bodyguard for the Roman Emperors.
@@Borderose Sure, but all three of those mentioned above would body him on an 1v1 armed fight.
@@ItsMeStrider Maybe, maybe not, the whole who beats who to determine who is better doesn't really work
@@minial0015 Askeladd was literally slicing up the King's Guard like butter after he killed the King and Thorkell was holding off a army at the bridge of England. Snake knew he was gonna die in the battle if they never retreated and couldn't beat an unarmed washed up slave Thorfinn who Askeladd destroyed when he was in war with his daggers.
Thorfinn is finally becoming his dad. Being skilled enough to fight and defend himself/others but mentally strong enough not to kill.
I see nothing wrong with killing your slave owner or someone whos gonna kill more innocent people
Perhaps he can then tell me what makes a true warrior. Will he understand? How many men did his father have to kill before he learned what it means to be a TRUE warrior? I wonder what taught him? Perhaps it was bc he was so strong, he didn't need to ever worry about the fight, so while fighting, he would meditate and contemplate like a zen master.
It's an odd twist on Vikings and viking culture because viking media usually depicts all vikings as cool with war and vikings are never that sad to die by the sword because that's their ultimate goal. They only wish to earn a place at teh feast before they arrive. But if a great warrior kills them in a great battle, they're happy to die.
Vinland Saga has that. But then the greatest warrior, the best among all those amazing warriors, is a pacifist. He's able to easily subdue a ship full of experienced norse mercs without killing or maiming any. He only seemed to try with the Underboss and the Boss.
Rewatch the show. His dagger stance is incredibly similar to his dad's unarmed stance. It's great
@@burtan2000 Nothing to do with that. It was the realisation that despite all the strength in the world, it did not bring him closer to the things he wanted. Finding that there are more important things than just fighting and winning, and that there are better ways to solve problems than with force was what brought him contentment. It is a very interesting journey to write for a Viking, stereotypically one of the most battle-crazed cultures of the world.
More than mental strength. I think it's emotional strength honestly
Snake said he's a warrior from Miklagard (Constantinople), which means he could be a Viking belonging to the Varangian Guard.... one of the most elite Viking mercenaries at the time.

yeah but lets be honest, if thorfinn had his daggers he would run him over if its a tie when he is unarmed.
Both of them: "he's him"
@@xtremelemon8612 we clearly see snake turn up the heat and overwhelm thorfinn, I’m sure snake would have gotten all out from the start if thorfinn was armed, he was clearly underestimating unarmed thorfinn and that’s why thorfinn got some blows on him

Keep in mind. This is Thorfinn’s first fight in YEARS. He was rusty. With a proper warm up and his daggers it would have been a landslide victory.
Its doesn’t matter in the grand narrative, Thorfinn’s story is not a power trip
"Are you serious? He's unarmed. What kind of monsters was he surrounded by?" Fucking chills
@@hieuduong2213 With all the cool, well animated battles going on, it’s easy to forget that anti-violence is the point of the narrative 😅
I mean Snake hasn't fought in years too. While Thorfinn was working hard in the farm...which actually enabled him to be in shape...Snake had been lazing around all the time. He was protecting the place but there was no fight the place so he hasn't fought in years...maybe more so than Snake.
@goodgrief6721 I think both are equally rusty, Thorfinn definitely more.
Snake managed to "train" even by fighting Gardar, Thorfinn remained more like "in shape" thanks to the hard work and strict diet. One thing is for sure though: both had no idea how the other one fought. Snake couldn't understand how Thorfinn fought because of his unusual weapon choice that shaped his fighting style, going as far as to almost panic because of how brutal he was with just fists and kicks. Thorfinn couldn't understand how Snake fought because of his curved sword, even going to say that he was faster than anyone he had ever faced and eventually even end up losing to him.
Snake speeds up his thrusts on his sword to get Thorfinn to focus on that drawing attention away from his kick. Amazing
much like what Thor did to Askelad in order to get him to break his sword and win over the fight

@@richardb9501 manga version of how he got to the cart was better Imo
@@Cal827 what did he do in the manga?
Fighting with daggers really paid off for Thorfinn because it helped him develop the agility and experience needed to close distance and fight people with a longer weapon or reach advantage, So now even when he's fighting completely unarmed he's not totally screwed and knows how to maneuver. This also shows that he's becoming more like his father who was able to easily dispatch hordes of warriors without using a sword
In the manga after he says "he's the fastest guy i ever faced" he completes "i can't close distance." Everytime he tries to go in another hit comes and he still landed a bunch of shots, he was evading like Neo in the Matrix, Snake even says "how the hell is he evading everything!!!!"
@Gustavo Silva yep, In HEMA when some tries to daggers against a longsword or spear they have to be very fast and precise to take advance of any oppurtunities or they're screwed
Yeah also daggers were not a very popular main weapon choice for viking warriors, so his opponents probably weren't used to fight against this type of style. A lot of what makes Thorfinn a great warrior is the element of suprise, he also doesn't have the typical bulky physique of viking warriors, he is very frequently underestimated and he makes it work to his benefit.
@@arthemysiaHe still has borderline inhuman strength tho.He can snap the radia of a grown 6 feet tall man with a punch.

The entire Askeladd self conscious, is such an amazing thing to add to Thorrfinn. I absolutely love it and gives me chills, when Askeladd talks you know thorrfinn is in trouble.
Askeladd and thorfinn almost as like Canute and his father I guessed
@Habibisalim yeah same concept. You rarely see it and they've done it perfectly and it's something like thorfinn sharing the story of vinland, it's done beautifully when it shows up.
@@TyrantsRuinyup and he’s on the same side as when he was there coaching him fight Thorkell. Amazing small details

The way Askeladd is talking to him man.
I really love that 3:09 line where snake questions how did insanely skilled thorfinn ended up being a slave, throwing back to the moment where sverkel said that slaves are just unlucky people. My guy having cognitive dissonance here.
But Snake is right. You presume that he would be hard to capture and sold, being a skilled warrior. And you also presume that he would want to be free, so how do you keep someone that skilled a slave. Truth is, if Askeladd was alive, no one could capture or keep Thorfinn a slave. But once he was dead, it was all the same to Thorfinn.
What you mean by that
Thorfinn doesn't have to be a slave if he doesn't want to be, luck has nothing to do with it.
If he wanted he could kill everyone on that farm and walk away. Thorfinn even told a slave girl if he was a slave he'd kill his master and pursuers to be a free man. Thorfinn just decided to be a slave as penance
@@brankodrljaca1313 Not at all. Snake thinks slaves are born to be that way and the Old Master was the one telling it like it is. I mean even narratively that's obvious. It doesn't matter how skilled Thorfinn is or why he's given up on life in this context. He became a slave and his was will broken and that's all there is to it. To someone like Snake it is cognitive dissonance and a wake up call that someone like himself could easily be in Thorfinn's position.

What I love about this is that they never hated each other and even afterwards, they kept being friends/having respect for each other unlike in most anime.
I believe its entirely their character. Thorfinn is a pacifist despite a great fighter and Roald has his morals, unlike thorfinn who actively avoids conflicts. Roald actively avoids involving others in his affairs as shown frequently from trying to spare arnheid from his master and his men from war. This tells of how a good person Roald actually is. Sad we never get to see him again after the Farm arc.

2:21 Props for Snake, having that conclusion in mind. He's really good at reading situations.
I think the show did a really great job at showing how exceptional warriors are portrayed compared to ordinary people who’ve killed but has never seen the battlefield and survive to tell the story.
Remember in season 1 when Thors knew right away who was the strongest, just by looking at Askeladd. Same goes to Askeladd who can see right through Thors.
The show portrayed it in a way that, exceptional battle-trained warriors can recognise each other’s skills through surviving the war.

“I am a warrior of Miklagard.”
Manga readers “They confirmed it! It’s official!”
You know it's peak when even manga readers gets surprised.
So does that mean snake is middle eastern?
@@gamerstheater1187 Miklagard is what the Vikings called Constantinople, and the Eastern Romans back then had a habit of hiring Norseman to serve as elite bodyguards of the Emperor, aka the Varangian Guard.
Manga readers had long speculated that Snake was a former member of the Varangian Guard, not only because of his personal sword, but also because of his familiarity with Christianity and the Bible. So it’s nice that they finally confirmed this theory for us.
@@gamerstheater1187Constantinople- today known as Istanbul- is a European city, not middle Eastern. It is in Thrace. It was the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire- the Eastern surviving half of the Roman Empire after the Western half collapsed in 476 AD. It was founded by Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in 330 AD. It was a unique city in the Middle Ages because it was one of the last great European cities that preserved ancient architecture, arts and culture (although that can be said for the Eastern Roman Empire as a whole tbh). It had well preserved and maintained ancient Roman architecture such as collosi, statues, fountains, Roman triumphal arches, triumphal columns, Forums, well preserved aqueducts- in fact Constantinople's aqueduct (Aqueduct of Valens) was the longest one built by the Romans, ancient Pagan temples converted to monuments, Basilicas, Roman roads, hippodrome, theatres, Roman baths, gymnasiums, sewers etc. It was a very huge and wealthy city as it controlled all the trade flowing between Europe and Asia due to its location. It was also defended by its famous triple walls- the last great fortification of antiquity- which made it impenetrable. It also had an immense number of people reaching 800,000 at its peak at a time when the largest Western European cities couldn't support more than 40,000 people. This is why the Vikings called it "Miklagard" aka "the Great City" and they thought all the wealth in the world came from it.
Another fun tidbit is that they launched multiple invasions of it, including one by sea which was crushed by the Roman navy and its famous Fire ships- ships that could eject a napalm like substance from their bows that could burn even in water. The eastern vikings and Roman fought numerous conflicts ranging from minor skirmishes to open wars until the reign of Emperor Basil the Bulgarslayer who formed a marriage alliance with them leading to the Christianisation of Eastern Vikings and them serving as the personal Guard of the Roman Emperor known as Varangian Guard.

His real father and second father Askeladd did a great job
"a warrior of miklagard" would seem like a throwaway line to an average joe but if you're keen, you would know that that implies snake was a former varangian guard - an elite unit employed by and personally loyal to the emperor of the byzantine/eastern empire. the fact that snake isn't actively using a typical spathion that the greeks of this period used as what normal varangians woudl have used but some sort of arabian saif would've meant snake has extensive experience with either as a sailing vikingr (which would explain his saif as sailing varangians are allowed to keep a portion of their loot in privateering) or attatched as part of the tagmata as hetairoi.
tldr: snake is a prim and proper badass.
Im glad someone noticed it too !
I don’t think his weapon is arabian though. Byzantines developed a curved sword of theirs, the Paramerion
Maybe he killed one of them, deemed them as a worthy opponent, and kept it as a trophy of battle?
@@lorenzorosadini3248 The degree of curvature and ESPECIALLY the pommel's shape implies an Arab/Iranian make (although considering the thickness, I'd say Arabian since Iranian swords were longer and slimmer with a more prominent curvature) rather than the sabre-like paramerion (itself influenced more by Cuman mercenaries than from the Muslims).
Small correction- he is using a Paramerion, not a Spathion. A Spatha is a long, straight blade and it was more common of the two in the Roman army at the time, having been in use by the Imperial Army for nearly a thousand years by that point. Meanwhile, the Paramerion was a more recent addition probably inspired by the curved blades used by the Empire's steppe Cuman and Pecheneg mercenaries. It was also less common and probably used mostly by officers based on personal preference.
Both are Vikings. One is among Denmark most powerful Vikings, even once Canute's thegn, gave up his incredible past in search for the salvation. One is among Byzantine most powerful soldiers - the Varangian Guards, gave up his incredible wealth in search for a peaceful life.

One of the interesting things about Vinland Saga is that, since it's based on history, you can get a sense of characters' backgrounds based on real life lore.
For example, we know how strong Thorfinn is because we see Thorfinn fighting a lot throughout the series. We only see Snake fighting seriously once, but if you know your history, you know that his reputation puts him on a higher level than literally anyone else in the series -- "Miklagard" was the viking name for Constantinople, and the imperial guard of the Eastern Roman Empire, the Varangian Guard, used northern foreigners instead of local Greeks and Romans. They did this because the old Praetorian Guard was made up of Roman nobles with political interests, causing them to murder emperors as often as defend them -- foreigners are more reliably loyal to their employer.
And, of course, they didn't just want random nobodies from foreign lands to guard them -- they wanted the best of the best of the best, so they recruited from the culture that produced the strongest warriors, the vikings, and they scouted out the best of the vikings to be guardsmen. Snake wasn't a general who had armies to fight for him, nor was he merely a king's retainer -- he was the guy that EMPERORS trusted with their lives. No wonder he stomps Jomsvikings so easily. We don't get to see him in action as much as Askeladd, Thorfinn, or Thorkel, but based on real history alone, his past puts him above all of them.
Thanks for the history lesson.❤
And a years out of practice, unarmed Thorfinn is keeping up with him. Even managing to land a few blows. With snakes reputation, it puts Thorfinn on an even higher plain
@@Iamblack23 Keep in mind that Snake is, himself, not exactly in top form either, having been doing light work on a farm for years. Though you do highlight something that I feel I didn't make clear enough in my initial comment -- Snake having such a reputation does not inherently place him above everyone else, it only means that the group he was part of had a much higher baseline expectation of its members than any other group in the series.
@@Iamblack23yes that is called plot armor

You lost absolutely everything, fucking everything, at the cost of what??? fuck man, it hits so hard.
The only thing I'll say in Gardars defense is that I'm pretty sure it was the men of the village who decided as a whole to fight, it wasn't his choice alone, nor was it too clear where he stood about it.
I totally agree, Arnheid story destroyed me, I don´t have a wife or a child, but I could pretty much emphasize with her situation and the shit she went through - noone should experience it. And after a trauma and probably seeing your child murdered in front of you and being dragged to slavery, her wounds were opened again when she saw her husband, and again, she had to make peace that they will execute him soon....then, when tending to his wounds, he asked about their kid thinking he still lives - that is too much to bare how could anyone deal with something like that...

This was an excellently choreographed fight sequence.
You got to love the discussion about who is stronger and how many fanboy around Thorfinn. Which is understandable since we only saw his world. We can only compare him to the monsters we've seen: Thorkell, Thors and Askeladd - who were all also very different fighters.
Since the Vinland-Saga is based on the real world history of the early Viking-Age, we also may fantasize about all the other monsters out there.
Snake, for example, is a Varangian Veteran. Those guys were a chosen elite to protect the most mightiest man in the european hemisphere: the byzantian emperor, who ruled over an incredible well developed realm. So: Snake is a masterswordsmann, at least on par with Askeladd in this regard. He is a veteran of many battles in which the objective was not to simply kill but to protect the royal family while at it and taking comand of the troops - meaning: he is also a very skilled tactician and strategist. Or at least worked with people who were.
Imagine the ones, who are still in his service.
I love how no one beat the other, snake only “won” by moving thorfinn slightly out of the way. Goes to show how skilled they each are
To be honest, it shows that Thorfinn still isn’t that level headed or experienced in these types of situations yet. He’s previously only fought for himself in countless battlefields with swarms of enemies. Situations where he only needed to fend for himself and slay as many people as he could. Whereas the implication that Snake wasn’t just an excellent soldier on the battlefield but also a part of the Varangian Guard which protected the Byzantine Emperor, shows why he seems more experienced in not just taking down his opponent but winning the situation.
@@LastsBobaTeaYes. Exactly. It was clear Thorfinn's body reacted to save himself since his agility can afford him to fight the most skilled vikings but he forgot his goal was to keep Snake away from the carriage. When I saw Thorfinn using his dual dagger stance, I was so hyped, I literally screamed, “HE’S BACK!!!”
I love this series. I wish it would never end
Bro why is everyone in the comments treating it like it’s some power fantasy shonen, that’s like the opposite of the arc
Damn, Gardar absolutely GOONED Snake
Man was heavily wounded 4 times and still had the strength to choke Snake to death, I'd say in terms of physical strength he's third:
1. Thors
2. Thorkell
3. Gardar
With a dead man's grip

2:13 bruh, Snake is probably Byzantine or maybe even a Varangian Guard. It would explain his purple tunic and curved sword (swords from other characters are straight and double-edged).
Plus, he even said he is from Miklagard. That is what the Norse called the city of Constantinople.
Thorfinn's stance gave me chills, he perfectly knows that he only need his hands!!
He gave baddass vibes without even trying🔥🔥
That’s how being badass works
Dude I love this anime so much I can't explain in words, my friends thinks it's not good coz all they want is action but honestly every bit of this anime is so good it's on top of my "favourite anime" list.
Snake's such a badass man, just straight cool
This fight showed us just how strong thorfinn actually is and his character development as well.
What I love about this fight is you really feel the weight of both warriors' experience here.
You feel they are both good.
0:02 "Hooray"
Everyone thinks snake would lose cause he was fighting seriously with a sword against bare fists. Snake was only fighting to get to Gardar ,period. This is one of the best fights of the entire manga. They were both extraordinary warriors who were only fighting as a means to an end
If Snake ever met Thors he would instantly respect him, he only came to the ketil farm was cause he knew the real Iron Fist, turns out that ketil just had the same name. But His father Sverkel talks like he knows exactly what he’s talking about when talking to Snake, he has swords and spears on his walls . He might’ve just been the real Iron fist who changed his life like Thors. Or maybe he’s just a smart farmer 😂😂
"What kind of monsters surrounded him"
Vinland saga season 1 in a nutshell
Notice how when thorfinn fights now he's more controlled rather than old thorfinn who would just let the rage take over and kill everyone in sight
Control thorfin will one shot rage thorfin
1:38 I love how they animated that part, it really emphasizes the fact that Thorfinn hasn't trained in years, he's very rusty.
In that last swing, Snake through eye contact knew where thorfinn is going to jump so he just scared him and didn't intend to fatally wound him. His goal is done, he is next to Gardar.
The spinning back kick into roundhouse was so clean.
I'm glad they animated it well
this season 2 arc was so emotional, very sadly arc i ever seens. all character season 2 did very goodjob role
last fight before thorfinn finally becomes a true warrior
For thorfinn to say Gardar is strong really says something. I bet Gardar was one of the stronger warriors out there. Not as strong as thors but still formidable.
Imagin a battle between Gardar and Thorkell , it would be fire 🔥
Those close quarters combat of thorfinn clearly showed that if he has his dagger snake would probably have a lot of bruises by the time thorfinn landed all his blows that is if he's armed with his dagger maybe the outcome will end in a different way.
2:34 Definitely would be fatal, or at the very least incapacitate Snake. Snake never lands any hits before this. Thorfinn definitely would have won. Only question is that Snake does speed up near the very end. He might just start as fast as possible if he sees that Thorfinn is armed.
@@whichDude but understand that snakes knows that Thorfinn is empty handed so he knows that him getting hit by thorfinn isn’t big deal considering it would just be a punch. If thorfinn had his daggers I would imagine snake would have a more careful fighting approach
@@yrnkid8748 That's kind of what I pointed out. I mentioned that Snake was losing, but picked up his pace as the fight went on. Then also mentioned that if Thorfinn was armed that he might have just started off at that pace.
@@yrnkid8748you’re literally the only person I’ve seen in the comment section that mentioned this! I said the samething
That’s goosebumps moment when Thorfin took that stance back ❤❤ bruhhh
Thorfinn is like a declawed cat
I'd say more like a declawed big cat. In a scrap against a bigger opponent, cats HAVE to rely on agility because they fundamentally don't have to tools to overcome raw power.
Big cats on the other hand still have heft and strong muscles. When you think about it, physical power is what lions use to overwhelm their prey, they use their claws to latch on, but most of their kill count can be attributed to crushing the windpipe of their prey with their fangs
Thorfinn maintains his power but has learned to fill his soul with things other than revenge. Battles are more challenging without a weapon, but in the long game, victory is won by using your head
Askeladd was able to beat Thorfinn without a weapon and did so to shine a light on such principles. When you think about it, this is what beat the mighty Thorkell (twice over in fact) He was frustrated because Thors was stronger than him, but couldn't quite grasp until much later the vice that Thors was working with
Instead of straight contests and fights to the death, Thors learned how to reserve his strength for pivotal moments and maintain that strength over time despite not having endless opponents to overcome. That requires commitment and a sound mind
That's a declawed lion.

Snake was SO right in this moment. Even Thorfin couldn’t disagree with him. Snake and Askalaad are the best characters in this show to me.
They say season 3 will be even better than the previous seasons. Can't wait
One of the best parts of season 2. When they are both equally shocked how good the other one is.
This fight was a good way to show Thorfinn taking a step forward. He might not be there completely but he took a step
Two strong men acknowledging each other, what a sight
3:03
This moment has conveyed something strange yet undeniably real. It suggests that possessing skills don't guarantee the quality of life you will have.
Regardless of whether you have talent or not, leading a good life still depends on luck, which is not governed by your will.
Gardar had snake in a normally inescapable situation. Bro had him in a choke that was also holding him up in the air. Only thing you can do is “go sleep”😂
Thorfinn doesn't even have his dagger and this fight shows that their skills are on par... Imagine having his dagger.
ヴィンランド・サガは海外でとても人気なんですね。僕はヴィンランド・サガ大好きなんでなんか嬉しいです🫶
Such a great show
Thorfinn vs Snake is one of the Very few fights wherein They are respecting their Opponents no matter who or what they are. Truly amazing man
I don’t know what it is about when he takes his signature stance that instantly catapulted this scene into my top 20 anime scenes but it just gets it bro
So badass how they recognize the strength of each other.
the slow motion scenes were so fucking good if only they added some badass music to this fight it would have been epic
when he went into his double dagger stance and it showed the younger version of him i felt a cold shiver go through me like a ghost, this was prolly the most hype episode in s2
Respect on Thorfins name. No one can just kill in front of this man without paying that toll. Snake learned today.
The gross negligence of the 20 years olds in the comment section about Snake's real strength.... Just because Thorfinn punched him doesn't mean it was an automatic knife kill. A punch without a weapon is faster than a punch with a weapon. Plus your attention is far more focused on a weapon than on the hands. Just like how Snake sped up his attacks with the sword that distracted Thorfinn from the kick. Yeah Thorfinn would have won if he had his daggers, but a landslide victory is just being delusional.
It's crazy how snake had to dodge thorfins fists like his life depends on it...
Was very surprised Snake survived being strangled for that long. Seemed like over a minute of oxygen deprivation to the brain. Was both happy and disappointed/confused to see him again. He'd have permanent brain damage being choked that long. Minor gripe though, the series was a masterpiece. Loved the farewell he had for Thorfinn and Einar at the end.
i just love when thorfinn kicks people's swords. what an absolute legend
BEST EPISODE TILL NOW
Agree and can only anticipate it will get better.
Adored the manga, and found the anime adaption fantastic, wish berserk would have gotten the same treatment
The praise they gave each other was gold
It’s so interested how different parts of thorfinn’s psyche are represented by either Askeladd or Thors.
Dam no lies, watching this later. Why does it feel like the series aged like fine wine?!?!
Glad to see thorfin hasnt lost his touch
Best fight scene in the entire season

Thorfinn: What’s a warrior this skilled doing defending a farm?
