The one thing that didn't change about Thorfinn is how he infuriated Canute so much when they first met, that he started talking because of him. Even in this situation, he is baffled by Thorfinn's arrogance. He feels like he is the one talking to the king, not the other way around.
A great call back to scene where Askeladd was telling them his life story. Askeladd said that his father "was not a beautiful man" And then said that "people without beauty started to appear everyone this days"
The breath of relief Canute lets out when talking about gaining a new ally. He must have been suffocating in his own head with worry and stress. After all this time, it must have felt good to lean on/trust someone else for a change.
In the manga the change is a lot more visual. Canute's internal monologue is rappresented by his father the previous king, or rather, his chopped dead head talking to him like a second personality or a twisted sense of morality. An harsh image of grim resolve mixed with mental illness and a sense of solitude being the only one to understand a king's position. When Thorfinn says he'll run the head just vanished, then he explains his plan and the the ghost never returns.
this shows how strong Thorfinn actually is. he stops Canute and proved that hes the better man. Canute silently admires Thorfinn hoping one day their dreams when they were young happen. guess what? it did happen (present time)
The second season was such a massive departure from the first in many aspects except quality writing. It is nothing like the first season and yet makes so much sense for the characters we were introduced to. Stories like this are a rare thing.

Thorfinn represents all the farmers and subjects of Canutes Kingdom who warns Canute with his option of exiting the kingdom. Exit was always a bad thing for a kingdom.
I've definitely hardcore lost interest in the manga but I'm really happy that at least Farmland got animated. It's probably my favorite part of the story. I like the buildup after this but I really do not like the majority of the current stuff. The writing just isn't up to par. The story started way too strong I really like the Historical significance of this part of the story. Canute was actually a great historical leader of England and he managed to unify the people under him. He realized the Viking's had taken enough from the people and started to give back what they had lost. Also, allowing them to rebuild and feel safe under his protection. He managed to secure a good 20 years of peace for England which was unheard of at the time. Canute was respected enough to be buried in Winchester. His legacy started to become tarnished after taking a pilgrimage to Rome though. Being labeled as a Madman for being a second generation Christian. His government was horribly ununified due to his lax approach to ruling England. Allowing them to keep the majority of their laws and practices. He was very progressive. He attempted to create a collaborative governmental system but it failed miserably because he had barely any allies to help him. His sons completely destroyed the stability in his empire and destroyed it in the process.

I know it would have been pointless, especially as Thorfinn already demonstrated how far he was willing to go during the “fight” with Drott and he would have just been killed. But I would love an alternate scene where Thorfinn pulls two daggers out and starts going ham on everyone. Everyone is scared sh!tless and struggles to take him out. They do in the end but they lose a bunch of guys. They realize they can no longer do anything and retreat
That would have been absolutely miserable. It would ruin the entire season and Thorfinn as a person over all. We have enough senseless action in anime, let this one stand as a testament to something bigger.
