  • On Saturday afternoon a single missile fired by a jet fighter ended the brief, spectacular life of the Chinese spy balloon that had become a social media star with its own hashtag by the time it had finished passing through United States air space. CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports on questions that investigators will seek to answer by recovering the balloon’s wreckage.

What did they learn that they haven't already learned through satellites? The military purposely waited until it was over water. They took precautions and had every chance to shoot it down earlier if they thought it was necessary.

      They learned
That the US isn't willing to shoot down a unknown possibly dangerous craft into a civilian area.
That the US is willing to confirm and find out who it belongs to before taking action
That the US isn't going to take a lie that China had
That the US president is willing to take action against a foreign invader the moment the opportunity was presented.
That the US stealth fighter likely wasn't detected (more than likely knowing that the spy equipment likely couldn't pick up the incoming fighter)

Balloon is an Epic card that is unlocked from the Royal Arena (Arena 7). It is a building-targeting, flying troop with moderately high hitpoints and extremely high damage. When defeated, it drops a bomb which explodes after 3 seconds, dealing area damage to all units in its blast radius. It is a hot air Balloon held together by patches and ropes, and is piloted by a Wall Breaker from Clash of Clans. A Balloon costs 5 Elixir to deploy.

Still a LOT better response than what Trump did, when 3 of these balloons went over the US while he was in charge, he did nothing, letting all of them pass over AND return to China with whatever information they picked up... .
First, Biden actually blocked the signals the entire time it was over the US so nothing could be send out from it no matter what it might have picked up.
Now maybe (Probably/hopefully) Trump did the same (Blocking the signals) at least, but without actually retrieving the balloon or stopping it from leaving US airspace they have no way of knowing for sure (And no way of knowing exactly what technology was inside the balloons), so anything they might have picked up along the way over and around the US they were allowed to returned to China.
So Biden seem to have actually done a good job making sure that did not happen here. First they blocked the signals so it could not send out any gathered intelligence (Letting it fly around also made sure China did not find out any specifics about actual US response or early detection systems).
Then shooting it down and retrieving it before it could leave US airspace, so even if it had picked up anything, no information could be retrieved back in China (Or sendt out by the balloon after leaving US airspace and US blocking signals were out of reach).
+ now the US military had the chance to inspected the balloon and know exactly what technology was inside it, both making sure it did not actually gather anything (And if it did, was not able to leave with any of it), AND to better know what they should do the next time it happens (As Trump already let 3 of these balloons poass, this 4`th one is probably not the last)...
All in all this seems like a great way of handling the situation...
(NOT in fact letting slip how US detection systems or responses actually work while making sure no information is gathered or returned to China, and sending a powerful response that this will not be accepted anymore the way it was under the last administration. Showing the world that the US will not just let these kind of spy-balloons pass over and return to China anymore)
All in all seems like a good response, as opposed to how Trump handled it....

To put things in perspective, under Project Genetrix, US sent more than 500 high-altitude balloons, 50K feet above ground, over China and Russia territories. When China or Russia protested, US claimed that it was within US international rights to fly these balloons over. The basis for US claim is that by convention, the national air space rights are around 30K feet above ground. But there is no clear international rights declaring the extend of the national air space.
The Chinese balloon was flying 60K feet above ground. So according to previous US practice, it is within China's right to do the same. Thus the anger from China's statement and the warning that it will do the same to US flying objects over Chinese territory.

That was in the early 1950's before the first satellite was launched and before high-altitude recon aircraft such as the U-2. It can't be expected for those exact same air space boundaries to apply in 2023. Also, many of those balloons _were_ shot down. China is well within their rights to shoot down U.S. equipment sent into their airspace, however that's something already previously understood. U.S. didn't set some of kind new precedent here.

And, in any case, it was A LOT better than the response of the previous (Orange) White House...
While Trump was in charge he let 3 of these balloons go over the US without ever shooting any of them down, and he just let them pas over and return to China... How is THAT a good response? (Trump cared more about hiding the fact of these balloons existence from the public than actually doing anything about them).
So Biden`s response is a HUGE upgrade from what the last administration did....
Also: "Brandon can't make a decision to literally save his life"?? "Literally"??
That is literally not true in any way....
There was literally NOTHING close to his life on the line in any way, shape of form in this case... So that is literally not true....
It is also documented that Biden was briefed and literally made the decision quickly of what to do, telling the military to shoot it down when it was safe to do so without risking the debris hurting anyone, as it was the size of 3 busses, so they decided to do it over the coast (And they blocked the signals the entire time it was over the US mainland)

China is working to extend its force projection globally and is currently building long range weapons (ICBM's, hypersonic glide) to support this. Command and Control (C2) of these weapons far beyond line of sight with global reach is critical to success. To make their new long range weapons work soon they will have to install fully functional and tested C2 hardware and software in the built weapons to complete their weapons systems.
China, rather than fire long range weapons to test command and control functionality, likely installed long range weapon C2 hardware and software on the balloon which then drifts to the areas they want to hit with long range weapons such as key U.S. military installations. This allows the testing of ground / satellite interfaces and the hardware / software required to control weapons over huge distances to targets. Also allows china to monitor U.S. ability to intercept, decrypt and disrupt their C2 signals. System doesn't work if the U.S. can hack in and take control of their weapon.
