- On Saturday afternoon a single missile fired by a jet fighter ended the brief, spectacular life of the Chinese spy balloon that had become a social media star with its own hashtag by the time it had finished passing through United States air space. CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports on questions that investigators will seek to answer by recovering the balloon’s wreckage.

Chinese learned a lot about our response, our resolve, and our capabilities
Chinese already knew all these things. They wanted to see the little afraid boy in you. They wanted to see if you were a real man yet. Sadly, they have to wait a little longer for THAT transformation.
What did they learn that they haven't already learned through satellites? The military purposely waited until it was over water. They took precautions and had every chance to shoot it down earlier if they thought it was necessary.
Who cares. They would be destroyed in war.
They learned
That the US isn't willing to shoot down a unknown possibly dangerous craft into a civilian area.
That the US is willing to confirm and find out who it belongs to before taking action
That the US isn't going to take a lie that China had
That the US president is willing to take action against a foreign invader the moment the opportunity was presented.
That the US stealth fighter likely wasn't detected (more than likely knowing that the spy equipment likely couldn't pick up the incoming fighter)
@@elyrexo 😭😭😭😭
I think they wanted to see how we would react more than anything.
Yes, I don’t think they thought nobody would notice their “spy balloon”.

You know what one thing I'm curious is how this balloon didn't got detected by nearby countries in China such as India and of China claims it was a civilian aircraft why would they sent civilian aircraft to a countries airspace and how is it and aircraft?
Balloon is an Epic card that is unlocked from the Royal Arena (Arena 7). It is a building-targeting, flying troop with moderately high hitpoints and extremely high damage. When defeated, it drops a bomb which explodes after 3 seconds, dealing area damage to all units in its blast radius. It is a hot air Balloon held together by patches and ropes, and is piloted by a Wall Breaker from Clash of Clans. A Balloon costs 5 Elixir to deploy.

What could that antiquated thing tell them that their satellites are transmitting every single day? It's more of a "hey, what are you going to do about it moment". We didn't over react we just carefully did what we are supposed to do.

Still a LOT better response than what Trump did, when 3 of these balloons went over the US while he was in charge, he did nothing, letting all of them pass over AND return to China with whatever information they picked up... .
First, Biden actually blocked the signals the entire time it was over the US so nothing could be send out from it no matter what it might have picked up.
Now maybe (Probably/hopefully) Trump did the same (Blocking the signals) at least, but without actually retrieving the balloon or stopping it from leaving US airspace they have no way of knowing for sure (And no way of knowing exactly what technology was inside the balloons), so anything they might have picked up along the way over and around the US they were allowed to returned to China.
So Biden seem to have actually done a good job making sure that did not happen here. First they blocked the signals so it could not send out any gathered intelligence (Letting it fly around also made sure China did not find out any specifics about actual US response or early detection systems).
Then shooting it down and retrieving it before it could leave US airspace, so even if it had picked up anything, no information could be retrieved back in China (Or sendt out by the balloon after leaving US airspace and US blocking signals were out of reach).
+ now the US military had the chance to inspected the balloon and know exactly what technology was inside it, both making sure it did not actually gather anything (And if it did, was not able to leave with any of it), AND to better know what they should do the next time it happens (As Trump already let 3 of these balloons poass, this 4`th one is probably not the last)...
All in all this seems like a great way of handling the situation...
(NOT in fact letting slip how US detection systems or responses actually work while making sure no information is gathered or returned to China, and sending a powerful response that this will not be accepted anymore the way it was under the last administration. Showing the world that the US will not just let these kind of spy-balloons pass over and return to China anymore)
All in all seems like a good response, as opposed to how Trump handled it....
It is exactly the so-called "freedom of navigation" that has been claimed so many times by US over South China Sea. Now it is US's turn to enjoy this freedom!
This was a love letter from Erik Swalwell's Chinese mistress. No big deal.
These days I had something exciting in my daily life. I'm going to have those boring days again. Thanks Ballon for spice things up for few days 🎉
I could see the changes in you. That balloon was good for us.
🤨 *MISSILES ARE EXPENSIVE!*
Why didn't they just use 100 rounds from a *GAU-8 Avenger 30mm gatling gun,* which would cost roughly *$13,000* instead of using a *$381,000 AIM 9X MISSILE* to shoot down that stupid balloon? 🤯
If they had shot *the balloon itself,* tearing it to shreds using *the gattling gun,* _they could have retained the payload!_
Instead, for reasons that are _absolutely unclear,_ they *blew the payload to pieces using the missile,* making it very difficult...if not _impossible_ to recover the pieces of the payload!
😡
You should know precisely that public tax money means nothing to sleepy joe. He got his LIVE FEED lime-light moment political ploy. NO amount of conserving money can replace that.
the A 10 cannot operate at the altitude of the balloon
The air force probably tried to use guns, I heard, but at that altitude, 60,000ft, it is hard to control the jets, which have to fly at high speed to maintain the altitude, which have the maximum ceiling of 65,000ft. in ideal conditions...
The Royal Canadian Air Force once shot down their own balloon. It was hard, it took many days for the balloon to come down, it leaked so slowly.
Because guns bad,
Missile good!
I agree with Michael Clarke's assessment that the Chinese are making a statement to the Philippines and the U.S. over the Philippines allowing the U.S. to come back there after kicking us out decades ago. China has claimed most of the South China Sea area in their 9-DASH line that includes all of the sea and islands, including the Spratly and the Paracel islands.
Someone needs to remind NORAD that their mission is to protect the U.S. from all airborne threats, including slow moving aircraft, not just supersonic and hypersonic aircraft. The Military Industrial Complex that Eisenhower warned us about has a tendency to focus on the expensive sexy projects, not the low-cost mundane systems that can do just as much harm.
Balloon control obviously broken . So it was obviously drifting St 62000ft.
China could have just got on Google Maps and saved alot of money.

It is virtually impossible to control a balloon other then some altitude adjustments difficult to gain altitude once lost without external sources of lifting gases.
It not a zeppelin with somewhat more control inputs.
This great gas bag seems to lack adequate re inflation apparatus. Perhaps an initial fill of helium that can be vented but not recovered.
As far as spying it is totally superfluous as satellites are far more efficient. Ever seen Goggle earth?
I think the purpose behind this is to eliminate the American school system. After all, we seem to have lost the ability to reason our way through any situation.
Let's just stay glued to the little hand-held mind-control devices, while they tell us how the Chinese can control an inflated giant condom by bouncing brain waves off the spy satellite hovering over your bedroom window.
What ever happened to the ability to think?
I think people could understand evacuating an area to shoot it down, would be better than letting it continue. Our defense system has been tested and failed.
They wouldn’t.
No it hasn't. By letting it drift to water and shooting it down. The US will have a easier time collecting pieces than it it crashed into solid ground not to mention any harmful chemicals or products likely would be rendered inert in salt water than being exposed on ground.
@@Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent The mainstream media says the exact same thing you said. They could’ve taken it out over Alaska and retrieved it there. Only after it completed its mission they take it out. Alaska and Montana have very little population there. The story the media are pushing out makes no sense either. I see many eager to believe anything they say without question. The data they claim needed to be retrieved was already sent back to China. You actually think the balloon was only capable of taking the data back without transmitting it back in real time? Retrieving it after the fact was only to realize it’s mechanical functions and capabilities. The data was long gone back to China. Fail.
@@varmintsniper2551 sorry but I dont see a failure and that it doesnt make sense. You do cause that's your mindset. Bet if it was shot down in alaska or Montana you'll be complaining about why we shot it down someplace where the military cant respond to pick it up right away.

They are simply trying to distastefully pick a fight with the U.S.
Those balloons are probably what have been causing Havana syndrome
To put things in perspective, under Project Genetrix, US sent more than 500 high-altitude balloons, 50K feet above ground, over China and Russia territories. When China or Russia protested, US claimed that it was within US international rights to fly these balloons over. The basis for US claim is that by convention, the national air space rights are around 30K feet above ground. But there is no clear international rights declaring the extend of the national air space.
The Chinese balloon was flying 60K feet above ground. So according to previous US practice, it is within China's right to do the same. Thus the anger from China's statement and the warning that it will do the same to US flying objects over Chinese territory.
That was in the early 1950's before the first satellite was launched and before high-altitude recon aircraft such as the U-2. It can't be expected for those exact same air space boundaries to apply in 2023. Also, many of those balloons _were_ shot down. China is well within their rights to shoot down U.S. equipment sent into their airspace, however that's something already previously understood. U.S. didn't set some of kind new precedent here.
Brief? It was hardly brief.. It traveled through many other states in places and over several military bases where it easily could have been shot down.
Yea sprinkling biotoxins that will wipe out 98% of the population. This is the end
Irrelevant. We jammed any transmission.
Why didn't they use a A-10 Warthog or another plane that uses machine gun fire instead of a pricey missile? Slowly deflating the balloon would have kept the payload in less pieces.
They don't actually want anyone to discover what was in there.
Could've been a new variant for all we know
They didn't want evidence....
Efficiency has never been a trait of the military.
Oh heck, a harpoon would work, and pull it down as the air came iur, right?!? Agree with you, if examining the balloon was a goal they would have done it differently.
Seems a smaller hole made with the gun would have been better. Slower descent. They could have modeled a descent closer to shore
I'm sure plenty of people took shots at it from the ground. Too far away, I'm guessing.
Planes could have fired a gun though.
Shot down by missile. Missile looks like it hits payload first destroying knowledge that could be attained.

Because both Canada and US were notified before it floated over the borders. Nobody will see a balloon up in the sky and just go "Look! It's a Chinese balloon!" That's why Canada just ignored it, but the US decided to spin this into another "Red Scare". Fear-mongering is a great tactic.

How did they know the balloon was from China?
america: hmm.. that doesn’t look normal. Let’s shoot it down
The US should bill China for manpower, jet fuel, and missile, and of course the CCP-virus bills.
Why not take it down in Alaska, which is sparsely populated? Why let it cross the entire nation? Also, machine guns would have taken it down while creating less shrapnel, I imagine, but I admit I don't know about these things so don't come for me.
US is trying to sell a fear China narrative to other countries, if they got the balloon intact and it was nothing but a weather balloon, it would weaken that narrative and make US look paranoid. why else would China make a spy mission so obvious to the world when US is trying to paint a picture of an aggressive China? to support the US narrative? the pentagon probably knew about the drifting balloon over the Atlantic, and they let the balloon finish its mission before blowing it to pieces. from the video footage it looked like they targeted the payload not the balloon. now the US can claim whatever they want on what that balloon carried.

The lovely white gigantic wandering ballon ..
Took way to long to shoot it down. Brandon can't make a decision to literally save his life.

Don`t disagree, not sure why it was not shot down before going over the US, but they say they were tracking it and blocking any and all communications to/from it, and they shot it down and collected it before it left US airspace.. So all in all it seems like it was handled safely...
And, in any case, it was A LOT better than the response of the previous (Orange) White House...
While Trump was in charge he let 3 of these balloons go over the US without ever shooting any of them down, and he just let them pas over and return to China... How is THAT a good response? (Trump cared more about hiding the fact of these balloons existence from the public than actually doing anything about them).
So Biden`s response is a HUGE upgrade from what the last administration did....
Also: "Brandon can't make a decision to literally save his life"?? "Literally"??
That is literally not true in any way....
There was literally NOTHING close to his life on the line in any way, shape of form in this case... So that is literally not true....
It is also documented that Biden was briefed and literally made the decision quickly of what to do, telling the military to shoot it down when it was safe to do so without risking the debris hurting anyone, as it was the size of 3 busses, so they decided to do it over the coast (And they blocked the signals the entire time it was over the US mainland)
@@mrmcgruu9934 Its actually an expression but okay. He should step down from this travesty of a presidency because it could literally save his life. He knew about the balloon 5 days before he had it shot down. Didn't want to disrupt his cash flow from China but was given no choice.
@@markanderson7833 Come on, they tracked the balloon from before it came near US mainland, they blocked any transmitting to/from it the whole time it was over the US and shot it down before it left US airspace so nothing could be picked up after leaving, that seem like a good way of handling it...
Still don`t get what you are trying to say about how this could literally save his life? Is that a threat? Is there some reason why his life would be in danger? (I just don`t get what you are trying to say there?)
What cash-flow from China? (Sure you are not talking about the previous presidency and the rest of the Trump-family who have exploited the presidency to make money for themselves?)

I like the way discovered this balloon it was well in the USA when it was discovered so much for modern technology the balloons sneaking in
But that is just not correct, The balloon was spotted by the military way before it was anywhere near the US mainland. It was spotted and tracked, and as soon as it came near the mainland the signals of the balloon were blocked the entire way.
It was not spotted/discovered by CIVILIANS or the MEDIA before it was over parts of the country, but that is really not the important part as long as the military had full control of the situation....

All they needed to do was poke a hole in the balloon and have it slowly, and easily drift down. The fact that anyone believes this was a spy balloon tells me we as a nation are eroding when it comes to common sense. This was a propaganda bit for the Biden administration to pretend they are doing something, and to take people’s short attention span off of the lousy job Biden has been doing, along with his criminal activity that has been recently revealed.
Thousands of weather balloons are launched into the sky daily, many of similar size, this plays a large part in the weather forecasts. These balloons usually deflate themselves when maximum height is reached and the air pressure will force the helium out and they'd descent slowly. They don't just drop out of the sky.

China is working to extend its force projection globally and is currently building long range weapons (ICBM's, hypersonic glide) to support this. Command and Control (C2) of these weapons far beyond line of sight with global reach is critical to success. To make their new long range weapons work soon they will have to install fully functional and tested C2 hardware and software in the built weapons to complete their weapons systems.
China, rather than fire long range weapons to test command and control functionality, likely installed long range weapon C2 hardware and software on the balloon which then drifts to the areas they want to hit with long range weapons such as key U.S. military installations. This allows the testing of ground / satellite interfaces and the hardware / software required to control weapons over huge distances to targets. Also allows china to monitor U.S. ability to intercept, decrypt and disrupt their C2 signals. System doesn't work if the U.S. can hack in and take control of their weapon.
The next balloon will have dangerous weapons or chemicals to lay waste to the civilian population in the US.
It would have been Ironic if the balloon dropped in New York 🗽
It wouldn’t of have been.
Just delivering the big guys pay check.
The Chinese spy ballon was so white that burned my eyes when I was looking at it.
