Susan Hayward is magnificent in Robert Wise's brilliant film I Want T Live. Ms Hayward justly won the Oscar and received a curtain call from the Academy audience.

Susan Hayward's performance was good, but Barbara Graham was guilty and got what she deserved.

@@underzog Seriously??? I thought it was a true story? That's why it was so sad, because she was innocent and they killed her anyway. So she was really guilty? I never knew that. Of course I was just a kid and never researched it. But now I will go read about it. Thanks for the info but it makes the movie not as good to me now. lol

@@LisaHerman1963 I read L.A. Confidential and another book about Bsrbara Graham.. The circus at her execution nearly ended capital punishment in California; however, Barbara Graham's guilt was the reason capital punishment was not ended after her execution. "Good people are so certain they are right," Barbara Graham.

@@underzog Yeah, thanks. I looked it up and yes, she was guilty I think also. KInda changes the movie for me but Susan Hayward still did an excellent job, even if it was not such a true story. :)

The incredible Susan Hayward, in the performance of a lifetime. After four previous nominations, Susan finally closed the deal with this performance, beating out the likes of Liz Taylor and Shirley McClane.

This was a year of great female performances, and the 5 nominees were Deborah Kerr, Roz Russell, Shirley MaClaine, Liz Taylor, and the winner Susan Hayward. We know Susan won, but too bad we cant find out the ranking of each woman. David Niven won for Best Actor and Wendy Hiller won for Best Supporting Actress tfor Separate Tables his means there was "ticket splitting" and voters had to avoid Kerr to vote for Susan Hayward. Susan won the NY Film Critics, The National Board of Revoew the Golden Globe so Susan had to be considered the favorite. Roz Russel was a wonderful lady and a great star and never won a Oscar. Roz re created her smash hit Broadway role in Auntie Mame. Shirley MacLaine and Liz Taylor both were in MGM Movies and both were superb.

I liked the actor John Marley as the priest. There’s a brief scene where Barbara and he exchange hep cat banter about the lounging pajamas she was wearing, sweet and sad at the same time. From start to finish this film is outstanding in every way.

This movie appears to have had the same feel as the other 1950s movie such as the man with the Golden arm also starring Novak y Frank Sinatra. Kim Novak could have played a part here I feel equally as well. That black y white dramatic time of the 1950s..... sophistication, loyalty, drama, strong romance at all costs, perhaps some tabue subjects thrown into the mix, woman were not ashamed to be who they were. Tippi hendron also comes to mind.

On CZcams there is Kim Novak looking stupendous accompanied by a true legend James Cagney awarding the Oscar to Susan. There was a thunderous ovation , Cagney is overheard saying "Congratulations and and Susan said " Thank You Ladies and Gentlemen Thank You Ladies "as Jimmy Cagney and beautiful Kim lead the applause Susan said "Thank You Ladies and Gentlemen and thank you Ladies and Gentlemen of the Academy for making me so very happy tonight and a special thank you to Mr Walter Wanger who made this possible." Jerry Lewis the Emcee said would You hold the Lay and said "Susie will you come out and take another bow?" A Curtain Call, the only one to my knowledge ever given a star!
Susan's performance in that movie is magnificent, and kudis to Kim and Cagney and Jerry Lewis. The Oscars could use the class they exhibited that glorious night.
