Recruitment video for the SIU. Class 816 JOE FRANTA'S SLOP CHEST (my store): slopchestsailorstore.com/ INSTAGRAM: / franta.joe MY RV CHANNEL / @joefrantarv #siu #merchantmarine #sailor
ahhh familiar faces ((: I just came out and about to go on my first ship!! as 826-s! best experience of my life and many more to come! thanks you for this video
@James Schoonmaker Although it might seem like shit, that's only when you are a cadet afaik... and cadets only work for like 1-2 years until promotion I'd say. Besides it's not that bad, since you already basically live on the ship with free food and housing, so by the time you get back to shore you'll have a lot to work with.
Man times have changed. When I was that age maybe 1 out of 100 guys were fat. A VERY % of that class there is overweight. WTF is going on with young people in the USA these days?
I'm also interested in joining, one of my friends went there but hasn't really explained what a typical day schedule is like. Was told first months of training is 7 days a week and from 4am-8pm
Terrell Kirkland go to your local “SIU Hall “ just google SIU Hall it should pop up,go there then you can link up to a recruiter, it has two phases one phase last a month and the other one 90 days ,in the first phase you’ll need to do an application at the hall, present two letters of recommendation,do a simple maths and English test,no court cases, then wait for a confirmation to proceed to the second phase in which you’ll need to get a “TWIC Card”,do a cost guard drug test and physical apply for an “MMC Card “ present a dentist letter that says you got no mouth work and that’s it at this stage you’ll be scheduled a for a class.Good luck Future mariners!!!!
The point of the school is A. teach you stuff you need to know, B. Make you capable of taking more BS than you thought you could stand. Shipboard life is not like life on shore and many people get weird after a few days at sea. Great money though. Save it and you can have a great life, mortgage free home. I did it in less than 6 years, worked my butt off.
I was lifeboat class 674. I’m a merchant marine vet/army vet. Salute to all my sailors/soldiers

freebird 4life Thank you! the first phase has about 5 exams. every class has about 10-15 people. new classes arrive every month
Joe Franta, are those exams on the following competencies? (FirefightingFirsaidETC) please shoot me an email if you can
Why do they make it like boot camp and than when you get on a ship its laid back and not that serious
Localsh!thead old coast guard rules from what I heard
When the school opened in the 70’s a lot of the young men where “troubled youth”, who needed a fresh perspective.
