If you thought this scene was completely outrageous and implausible please bear in mind that the English have been putting restraints on the king's power since Magna Carta, and then outright rejected Divine Right and absolute monarchy with the execution of King Charles I. Then the English, in particular Parliament, decided to outsource the monarchy to part of the Dutch regal family when William III invaded England in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, all because James II wanted to enact laws to stop persecution of Catholics in a country now thoroughly Protestant. Finally, King George III, is not even English, he is part English, Dutch and German- He was increasingly a pawn of Parliament and the English state and King George III's actual power diminished with each and every decade. Thus the King being mentally unwell was an inconvenience to Parliament and that's why they pushed for a regent to ensure it was all business as usual. Mental illness or not, the way they went about it was disturbing. I get that it was a different time and mental illness was frowned upon, but it was cruel how they treated people with the disease.
I don't think you appreciate how foreward thinking this doctor was. The established professionals in this movie blistered him with heated glass jars, those are the wounds on his legs he is checking. This doctor uses care and patience to help the king and won't compromise dispite his royal status. Other doctors won't even ask for the king's symptoms, he has to give them himself if he so pleases. This doctor has to put the king in restraints when he is beyond himself because he doesn't have the luxury of modern sedatives, but when the king starts improving he is given the freedom of movement he needs for his recovery.

There had already been previous English kings who clearly showed signs of madness, e.g. Richard II or Henry VIII. Unfortunately, they were not given appropriate medical treatment.
It is interesting how two things seemingly unrelated can have a direct influence on one another. If King George III did not have porphyria, could it be possible that the United States would never have been formed as an independent country? No. The first serious bout of his illness occurred in 1788 after the war. Got a huge clockwork orange vibe from this scene
* King George III squirms *
Go Get Him!
There had already been previous English kings who clearly showed signs of madness, e.g. Richard II or Henry VIII. Unfortunately, they were not given appropriate medical treatment.
Excellent movie.
Bilbo makes a savage doctor
Excuse Me, Your Majesty!
We could use a couple of those restraining chairs in Florida
The framing was so off at the beginning of this clip I truly thought I was watching a clip from the John Adams miniseries.
This is so sad
That's me going to work everyday!
The only way they could shut up sir Humphrey.
Maybe he was so smart that we couldn’t understand him 😱
I read somewhere that The Madness of King George was the result of Syphilis.
No, it was caused by an hereditary illness in that line at the time, porphyria!
And I read somewhere that the earth was flat 😂🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
i hate what theyve done to king george for restraininh him like that many times
Maybe this would work on people with TDS.
We could do with a bit of that now with most politicians
Dr. Willis! His Majesty, George the III!
Poor Foot!!
Me: "I have a farm!"
George and his bros: 0:14
Me: "....no I don't"
It's a shame what happened to King George III if only the facilities were available to help with his physical as well as his mental well being
It is interesting how two things seemingly unrelated can have a direct influence on one another. Is it possible that King George III's porphyria was a factor that contributed to his policies that ultimately led to the American Revolution? If King George III did not have porphyria, could it be possible that the United States would never have been formed as an independent country? I don't know how they got away with treating the King, or any human being for that matter, that way.
I was gonna say dude was a raging lunatic but then again half the line of succession back then had some mental malady of the time.
you'd have to take incompetents and imperialists like Lord North out of the picture, but remember the buildup to the revolution had decades of additonal context
No. The first serious bout of his illness occurred in 1788 after the war. Contrary to popular belief it could many years between each attack although with increasing frequency as he got older, blind and senile. George III was actually a very strong monarch, the last British king intimately involved with government dismissing those who displeased him even when they had parliamentary majority. Which he could do because he had great popular support, known as "farmer George" a pious, moral king without airs.
@@Jauhl1 The British Monarch actually still has quite a bit of governmental power. It just that they have chosen to not exercise their full potential role.
@@faithfulforever6331 Already in the 18th century George was pushing it. A king appointing a government at his own discretion would quickly be stripped of the power in this day and age. George III publicly threatened MEP voting "wrong", and toppled governments forcing parliamentary reelections. His son William was the last British king that dismissed a British government but since he couldn't get parliamentary support for any alternatives he was forced to accept the same government again.
Power of Doctors!! Wuup Wuupp
Sir Humphry leveled up...
Ahhh, there we go...
