  • Here is the quick and short video with the test results of the EVE MB31 cells, as I promised😉
Both, the MB30 and the MB31 are awesome batteries, so which one to choose... I really don't know. I think at the end of the day, it does not matter and solely comes down to the price. The EVE cells will last a very long time with thousands of cycles. Do we have to compress them for a long life or not? The never-ending discussion...
QSO has really a winner here with these two batteries and a great quality as well as performance.
I also briefly address some concerns I have read in the past, about me getting 'perfect' and selected products from companies to show on the channel...

Variation. The MB30 sample is one of the best and the MB31 is probably an average sample (proof they are not sending you hand picked ones).
What is important is you are constantly getting better than rated. Its good when Chinese companies are conservative with their numbers. Its gives you more trust in the product.

I've purchased 3 sets of 16 cells 280aH from qishou, they all perform exactly the same. Balance is very good all on JK 2amp Bms in parralel with other manufacturers cells. One came damaged and one came Bloated , they were replaced free of charge no problem.
Ive had major problems with ogreen cells , deviation was 500 and 700mv difference and couldn't get more than 6kw out of a 14kw battery for this reason and they won't replace anything. Finally I've converted them to a 2p8s 24v system and added 2 active balancers in parralel... they are OK like that.
My advice is stick to Quishou... top quality, and a great customer service

Hallo Andy. Du machst deinen Kapazitäzstest ja mit einem Entladestrom von 40 A.
Ich finde nicht, dass man aus der Messung dann ableiten kann, dass die Kapazität der Zelle @08:52 "it is far over spec" ist.
Laut Spec gilt die Kapazität ja bei 0,5 C, also > 150 A.
Und mit höheren Strömen müsste doch die entnehmbare Kapazität kleiner werden. Oder?

One important aspect that you might like to know is that the Seplos 200E is keeping them perfectly balanced normally 0.2mv delta and it has done so from the moment I fired it up so I have not installed the Neey as yet, whether that is due to my careful individual testing cycles and top balance or not I shall never know.

Had to return 16 ea QSO 304Ah's but as said by Andy they handled it well. However the trust was gone and ordered from Duncan (or whatever it was spelled) and did received fairly good batch. So definitely they are testing what people tolerate and what not. I did specifically mention before ordering that each cell will be capacity tested with two electronic loads and will be returned if specs not met.
So that's my story, happy now eventually. But I do encourage people however not accept crappy cells, it will harm everybody.

@@typxxilpsI've had two batches of 304Ah cells from QSO. The first arrived in summer and averaged 312Ah. The second arrived in winter and capacity was hugely influenced by temperature. They were ok, but tested badly because of the conditions. This is why I have a 20W temperature controlled heating mat for each battery bank now (on at 18°C, off at 20°C) with insulation to retain heat.

If the battery box is used in the garage, it probably won't get below 0 degrees and then there shouldn't be any problems, even with a heating pad.

A battery rating should be higher before the charge/discharge 10+ish times for this chemistry. If you were NOT getting 5-10percent higher on initial cycle , they would settle lower than rated. After 100+, you should be under rated but not a huge amount. There is some general data on the web showing capacity degradation graphs for LiFEPO4 over charge/discharge cycles.

I would need to have 48V for it, but as the current deep cycle batteries are only 100A these will last a whole lot longer. The only thing stopping me atm is how these cells would go with vibration. What do you think about this? Thanks for all your awesome work. Cheers, Andrew.

I bought an Epoch brand 300Ah 12 volt 4s1p battery last september here in the US. They use grade A EVE cells. The battery i ordered was built and put together last August. I cant open the battery to see exactly what cells were used, but when fully charged, my Victron smart shunt and monitor independently show the same result as the bluetooth app for the battery and show that they have a capacity of 316 amp hours. i know its not the most accurate way to determine capacity but it has been consistent. the battery has passive balancing but cell deviation drops to .002 - .001 overnight after an evening of moderate to light loads from the inverter. the cells your testing are most likely an even newer model so it wouldnt be unreasonable to expect they are off the shelf cells.

LF280K v3 , by the manufacturer's specs rated for 1C continuous charge/discharge. By my opinion, if even we not going to use them under such high currents, anyway it's better because that means that under lower currents it potentially would give more lifespan than other cells which rated for 0.5C currents. Also good idea for testing is test discharge under constant power instead of constant current. It can show what a battery really can handle.

    Some more thoughts about compressing….
If I remember right, in older product specs for cells I found some data that the always mentioned compression of 300 kgf will extend the cycle capacity in some way. I don’t like to repeat all the pros and cons which have been considered in the past.
In the new specs for the MB31 there is no more advice that compression will give benefit for cycle live. If I have overlooked something, please correct me.
If I forget all the old stuff I can read just this:
    -quote-
“When forming modules, a compression force in the direction of vertical thickness is applied to the cells in order to make them better arranged and fixed.
If the compression force is too large, the cells may be damaged or even leak.”
    -unquote-
They further recommend a compression force of 3000 N to 7000 N and give a warning that forces over 10000 kN (1000 kgf !) can damage the cell.
In my own words they state: “Ok, if you need to give a force on your cells to fix it e. g. in your car, do it, but please not more than 700 kgf.”
I can’t see any ‘must do it’.
What we can see further down in the Appendixes is the description of the standard test conditions which is the same for all performed tests for all makers and all cells. Here we can find again the 300 kgf, 25°C, 12 mm steel plates and so on. For some tests this efforts make sense e. g. measuring swelling force of finally 6 metric tons or thermal runaway test up to 300°C.
That means, that al the all the stated specs. are measured under this standard conditions. Measured values could be different without e. g. compression of 300 kgf or could be not. This is not part of the specs.
Interesting is also further down in the chapter about swelling:
    -quote-
“Customers shall consider the reliability of structural strength in the product design process, and it is suggested to reserve 2.0 mm ~ 2.5mm expansion space while grouping the cells.”
    -unquote-
That’s what we have learned already earlier: You can compress at much you like, but you will never prevent swelling. You must have that space to avoid destroying your construction. Because at 60% SOH you may have that 6000 kg force in your casing.
Another thing is that the stiff copper bars, which are delivered together with the cells can not compensate the these changes of distance between the terminals and will cause lateral forces to the terminals. If there is free space between the cells, they will remain in the origin position and stiff bars are OK. With a compression design I would use always really flexible bars.
Lot of that above has been mentioned by Andy in earlier videos. I’m actually placing my new cells in the new self made shelves and I made already before the decision not to compress. With that new specs most of the remaining doubts are gone.

the capacity of new EVE cells adapts over time (mostly a month of use) to its rated capacity . Its normal to have much higher capacity on new cells . The LF280K starts mostly at 290 to 295Ah to stabelize at 280 to 285Ah . My EVE LF280K stabilized about 35 days on 20 cycles.

I think the difference between the 30 and 31 is mostly marketing when you look at the cycle degradation, with the expectation that they would settle out at the nominal storage will eventually be around the 306 for the mb 30 and with the less cycles of the 31 they can rate the nominal storage at 314 especially considering they are both new and being launched at the same time. I ordered the mb 30 as they are slightly cheaper and I would bet money they are the same inside and just have different spec sheets.

If you measure the dcIR for the cell you can estimate the resistive losses during charging and discharging. Lets say the dcIR is about 2mOhm. FOr 40amps current thats a power loss of 3.2 watts (I^2r). It took 16 hours to charge then discharge (or viseversa) so energy lost is 16 x 3.2 = 51Whr. So broadly, if you put in 1kWh to the cells, you could expect to get 950Wh out.

I am really very surprised by this noise which reminds me of a lead/acid battery?!!? They look like good but I'm really really surprised by this noise... hence my question 🤔🍺

Worth noting that these days chinese cells are really high quality, simply due to the volume they are produced in. Companies like EVE make GWhrs of cells each year, cells tumble off the end of the highly automated line at a massive rate. They simply can't afford poor quality or large variablities when making cells at this volume. So i'm not at all surprised that the cells are pretty good. In all honestly, whilst some of the specs claimed might be a bit "optimum" especially in terms of lifecycle, you do tend to get a constant quality cell from these chinese manufacturers when you buy new cells.
More of a problem is second hand / second life / conterfit cells etc. Those i would suggest are rather varriable......

The premium cells are picked just like computer chips are binned where there is always a segment of the cells in a run that outperforms the specifications they can pull and sell as the + version.. Supply capacity from manufacturing in China and the cost per cell due to the volume has decreased so it has actually become harder to ship the low cost stinkers as the factory new have crushed the scammers.. Recently bought EVE LF280K that were pre-imported to the USA in bulk and had free shipping from California for under $100 a cell.. Last year the cost was 20%+ higher so things are looking good.. I am disappointed with the 6mm terminals that have a small contact area and seem to be the same ones as the 100 amp cells.. The fact that these are guaranteed to have a 300 amp+ capacity is the up side and my guess is that production quality has increased to the point that marginal cells are the exception or the production of the 300+ cells exceeded demand and these are just derated on the label to ship them out..

Could you PLEASE charge the cells to 3.450 till Amps taken drops to (AH x 0.05) Endamp value, allow to settle for 1 hour and then discharge to 3.0V per cell. Just like your LIVE WORKING PACKS.

So if your spec started at 100Ah you could be looking at usable capacity of 30-50Ah, depending on load xC, ambient temp, age cycles? So maundering over +/-5% of Ah is a bit ingenuous. LABS BAD NEWS
