  • I finally managed to achieve a sound I really like. Some of you may noticed, that I deleted the BBC stuff from my Videos. I did that, because I wasnt really satisfied with them and they really did not sound that good. I had to get used to the new library and how certain instruments perform.
I recognized, that I still really love the East West instruments, mostly because they sound so lively and they bring a certain quality with them. So I decided to use the room that the BBCSO provides and put the EastWest instruments in it. For example: I used the 2. Violin and Viola from BBCSO but the 1. Violin is from EastWest. I also used the Harp, the Celesta, some Crushes, the short Trumpets, the long Double Basses and some Celli as well as the Horn Rips from EW. The EW Trumpets still amaze me with its crystal clear sound. So as I started mixing the librarys, the sound suddenly became better and better. People say, you should not necessarily mash you librarys to heavily because of different room acoustics and what not, but I think this is where the magic happens.
I was once again in an Elfman Mood for this piece.
I noticed that CZcams compressed the sound a lot which distorts it from time to time. For better quality visit the piece on Soundcloud: / come-with-me-original-...

When considering these sample libraries, even if they have more limited programming (the result of originating in the early 2000s) a good recording is still a good recording. That’s why I still use some older libraries (Peter Siedlaczek’s Advanced Orchestra, Spectrasonics’ Symphony of Voices, etc) to compliment my main ones (the Platinum Edition of EWQL Symphonic Orchestra (with the Pro Xp), and their Symphonic Choirs).
The Strength of any given sample library relies in the following points:
1 The instrument and its rarity: A Piano library is not going to be easily set apart from other piano libraries; a Duduk (Armenian flute) one, has it easier to distinguish itself as there are barely a few libraries which content it.
2 The relative quality (and/or uniqueness of timbre) of the instrument in comparison with others of the same kind: Not every instrument of a given type is the same. There’s a reason old Stradivari violins (and celli) are so famous.
3 The idiosyncrasies of the instrumentist, and their technique.
4 The technical quality of the recording, with the place the recording is made being also a part of the output.
5 The number of different articulations captured from the real-life playing.
6 How these samples are programmed, taking the user into consideration.
So, even if, because of its age, a sample library may be weak in some points, if it excels in others it’s still worth.

Interesting to read the background notes on the development of this piece. I agree, Tobias. Nothing like a bit of bastardisation in the pursuit of perfection :).

Yeah it’s fun to mix libraries. Personally, I like mixing Hollywood Opus with Audio Imperia’s Nucleus. Or Abbey Road One.

Btw what is that program! I want to learn more about it. Your music is now making me excited for this. (I also write my own song from only piano and it would be good if I can add this to my pieces)

I am using a digital audio workstation called Cubase! Just look it up, it is a very common DAW, even Hans Zimmer uses it :)

"you should not necessarily mash you librarys to heavily because of different room acoustics" Don't worry, only noobs say that. I can't think of a single one of my favorite film scores that was recorded entirely in ONE ROOM. Maybe Cutthroat Island is the only one. Using different rooms / reverbs is a terrific way of guiding the ear. I especially like to use drier, small-studio libraries for soloists and wetter, concert-hall libraries for supporting material. And you're right, the Symphonic Orchestra brass is still mind-blowing to this day (especially the shorts), and has a quality you can't really get anywhere else!
