  • Floatplanes are now part of Microsoft Flight Simulator in a big way! But they aren't as simple as land aircraft to operate... This video should give you some tips and ideas on how to best approach it.
    (Note, physics go brr in this sim, these techniques aren't best exhibited with the derpy water physics, but are best practice)

    I went on a glacier tour flight from Green Lake about 20 years ago. First time on a floatplane. We were approaching the dock at a speed that seemed too fast, but we stopped just in time.

    Hey Av, FYI, I was told by a friend who flies floats you can actually land floats on land without gear and without damaging them, apparently it's not that uncommon to do it as a means of getting the aircraft out of the water when it's either going in for maintenance or being stored for the season. I believe they are very careful about where they choose to land, always grass, and always somewhere their confident is good quality grass without anything that might be worse for a float than a tire.

      (if you search float plane landing on grass their are some videos, I even found one of one taking off from grass, although it was helped with a little human power to get it moving lol)

    Thanks for the excellent vid. As a boater, I would say approach the dock slowly at a right (or left) angle then turn your water rudders sharply so you coast in along side the dock. Couldn't say if this is best practice for float planes, but it works for boats in most (but not all) situations.

    • @AvAngel
      @AvAngel  Před 2 lety +1

      The sim's water phyiscs make actually docking properly basically impossible... too much friction by far... Got to take some considerations with that sadly till they fix the water. In real life you can coast it in like you say, but its a bit derp

    Speaking of performance, after reading around and experiencing it myself, people are beginning to say the way they have given us more performance is by nerfing the graphics, so it will actually run on Xbox. it certainly doesn't look as good on ultra after the update. its like the building at airports, you can see they are lower res.

  • @canadiancaptainmoustache
    @canadiancaptainmoustache Před 3 lety +3

    The bouncing/skipping effect is entirely realistic. When you were up on step and pulled back, the rear of the floats hit and either skip or slow you down IRL. There's what's called the critical angle you have to hold during float takeoffs. Too far forward or back and you'll either bounce around or lose speed. So that part is realistic
    That being said, the size/shape/mounting of the floats on the 172 they've given us is cartoonish. It makes me wonder if they even looked at pictures of a 172 on floats

    • @AvAngel
      @AvAngel  Před 3 lety +3

      Pretty sure they just got some off turbosquid and called it good :D
      I find some of the third party planes actually contact far better on the water than the default two... the blackbox l19, the wigeon and cessna 140... all have a nice smooth range on the step, this 172 feels like its floats are way too long and it catches way too easily.

    Thank you, Rachel! Huge fan and subscriber. Your YT "about" info indicates you are a long-time simmer, but you *must* have real-world experience too, right? How could you know so much without having been through this in real life? As far as water landings go, it does seem strange that Aosbo added official float planes without fixing the ridges/walls in the water surfaces, doesn't it? As for SU5, there are a lot of great new features, IMO, and, I, like you, do not see any notable graphical degradation. Your video shows a beautiful area from the real world looking very beautiful and real in the sim. Thank you again.
