I do similar process with pine cones. I soak for 30 min. Hot water with 10% bleach, I then paint, lacquer or both after they have dried. Any types of wood depending on size I hand sand, use belt sander or planer. It is fun to create with various elements. I enjoy seeing other peoples creations as well. TYFS!

Fast moving rivers are a good source for driftwood too. I like sanding with my mouse sander

Exactly what I do, and if I have a really tricky one, I have used my wheelbarrow as well outside, and I will let the wood soak in the bleach water.
