    The flooring is called Parquet wood flooring. Its used less now a days because it is a disaster to refinish. The constant changes in the directions of wood make sanding them with an oribital floor sander , a pain. Ya might as well just sand in increasing papers to finer grades until its "buffed" which is a lot more work than most hardwood installations require. Interesting fact: herringbone hardwood floors produce best results sanded side to side not linear. ;)

    I love how you show houses. So much respect. So much fun to walk through the houses with you all. The trash compactor compresses the trash. I was born in 1975. I remember my family had a trash compactor. It compacts the trash so you can fit more trash in. Stay safe. Thanks so much!

      Most urban explorers are respectful. I did it for years myself. If I walked up to an abandoned place and there wasn't a gentle way in, that sucked but I wasn't about to brute force my way in. Most, including myself live by the Motto "Take only Photos( or in this case video), Leave only footprints". I did it for years and seldom did I have a problem. Someone walks up to you and asks you to leave, you be respectful talking to them and leave. Police show up, Don't run, talk to them and they usually enjoy just letting you go and not having to deal with the paperwork.

    Glad to see you back! It’s a unfortunate you’re uncomfortable sharing more background information on the family and what happened to cause the abandonment. These homes are really a third of the story, it all comes together when you can match the backstory to the home. My opinion, the vandalism is done by locals before you or other videographers arrive. You’re video isn’t going to lead to more vandalism. Something to consider to really up your game.

    Guys, the trash compactor is cool. You put a strong bag inside, throw your trash in, and a steel plate comes down (when you start it) and smashes the trash down tight. My mother-in-law had one. I wish they would let me get those shelves with the glass, those are beautiful. And the weird wall paper isn't the worst I've ever seen. That honor belongs to the black wall paper with HUGE pink flowers that was in my brother's house (built in 1920). We always hated that paper but he didn't get a chance to change it before we had to move.

    • @mac.8184
      @mac.8184 Před 10 měsíci +2

      Yes, trash compactors were nice. Crunched the trash into a thick paper and didn't have to deal with messy garbage. Hadn't thought about them in awhile but perhaps they become less popular as recycling became more popular.

      We have 4 kids so we have had one for for 25 years. They get a bad rap because people say they stink. But they don't if you use them correctly. We have a disposal. Wet food goings in there and then it keeps the compactor from stinking. We had 6 of us and took the trash out once a week. Sadly they are so much harder to find now. We love ours!

    I am so glad that things are working out for you now. Life is very much like a roller coaster ride but it is essential to keep things in your life you love to do. I very much enjoy your channel. As an artist/designer I look at houses as works of art. It pains me to see so many details that were done by artisans destroyed by tearing this house down. I do understand perhaps wanting to change the house because there was a murder there but goodness why tear the whole thing down? Such waste. Lots of gorgeous trees and plants are going to be destroyed in the demo as well. I saw the beautiful Japanese Maple in front. Thank you for sharing this with us and welcome back.

  • @TVHouseHistorian
    @TVHouseHistorian Před rokem +29

    The room off the kitchen @14:20 isn’t a den. It’s an [edit] informal dining room. You can tell by the built-in hutch next to the fireplace. It would have been used alternately as a buffet and a place to display dishes or brickabrack. The home is something of a 70’s “French Country Colonial” style. Some of the cues for that are: lower ceilings, exposed wood beams, and the roof outside is done in the “Mansard” style. The name of the woodblock flooring throughout is called “parquet.” It was a popular floor treatment throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s. I’m guessing maybe the kitchen was updated *after* the man was murdered? I’m thinking it was deemed a necessary update in order to attract a buyer who would live there. Styling conventions like dark wood trim finish, the parquet floors, an intercom system, and skip-trowel pattern plasterwork on the walls seem to point to the house being built in the 1970’s. I could be totally wrong, but I love houses that were built in this era. If updated, I know I would really enjoy living there. Do you know what the name of the business man is who lived there originally?

      Yes to all. We and most of my friends families had an intercom system. That would be the 70s.😊. Ive lived with parquet a couple of times. The old saying was "A little parquet goes a long way". I agree with that. I thought that room was probably a library but I didn't notice the built in China cabinet. Just the bookcases so.. library. I'll look back.

      I was actually gonna also guess with my knowledge of years studying architectural design that most of the house looked Late 60s early 70s with some obvious more modern updates. So you might be very right on cue on the time frame. One of the things that definitely pointed me to that conclusion was the brick fireplace being identical to ones in my great aunts houses and my grandmothers house which all 3 houses were built in a range of 1965 to1972, It was very popular at that time.

    Ditto on the comments about the flooring and trash compactor. I almost peed a little when your partner in exploring said,"maybe it pushes the trash down the basement" giggles out loud! Back in the 50's they had a chute in the bathroom where you could put dirty clothes, in and it would go into a basket in the basement. That's normally where washer and dryer were until someone figured out it's a nightmare to haul up and down stairs. Always enjoy the exploring. This one had a lot of mold, and wonder how the man was killed and if they knew who did it. Thanks

    No I'm not hitting on anybody I am a 70 yr old lady and he reminds me so much of my grandson! Carry on...I love this mansion and do you know how the owner was killed, by an intruder or someone he might of known?
    The compactor in the kitchen is to put trash in and it compacts it for you, I've had a couple of different places I've lived in. Those are built in China cabinets in dining room in the corners not bookshelves.
    Omg I love the surprise ending "basketball court" to bad y'all didn't have a 🏀 with you!!! 👏👏👏

    I think it's a beautiful house. I would love to have it. The trash compactor would squish your garbage so it would take up less space. One of those things that was a must have for the time period. I never had one. Lol. The corner hutches in the room with the chandelier would hold the crystal glassware and the good china. This is a American decor, definitely not the way in Europe. I saw you on with Maureno. That must have been a trip. I didn't know you've been sick. Glad you are better. Good job.

    I like most of the house . That blue bathroom and the sink I really liked. And even the butterfly bathroom was pretty neat. I did like the carpet. The trash compactor is from the 70s. You would put a special bag in there and then push the button. So it would smash the trash. You keep doing that until full. Also that bedroom with the modern looking furniture. Looked like it was from the 80s.

    The "compactor" trash can is used to compress (or smash) trash to get more trash in a trash bag. Notice that the trash can is relatively small. Someone I knew with a horse farm had one. You also have to empty the trash less frequently...

      We used our trash compactor for making nice bales of marijuana way back in the 90’s. It made it more inconspicuous to transport and store all the bud we grew on my husband’s parent’s farm. Our compactor made the most wonderful round, not square, bags of the glorious green we cultivated. Good times!

    It's nice you are doing these videos. You are keeping a log of American architecture for the future, as well as keeping a lot of people "alive" in your storytelling. You are an all time great, as true historians/storytellers that are actually of high quality, just don't exist anymore. So you are a rare breed. Keep up the good work.
    I would like to ask though..........if possible, when you are describing homes and the people that lived in them, could you give us a year that the house was built and a year when the family lived there? It would be nice.
    And if possible, what state you are in.
    Those wooden floors you like are called Parkay floors. They are put together like puzzle pieces.........all made out of individual wooden pieces.
    OMG......you make me feel SO OLD that you don't know what a trash compactor does!!!! Geez. LOL. It compacts your garbage down into your garbage bag, so you can fit more garbage in one bag.
    It's possible, as this happens more often than not............people who buy old homes will start to renovate them and then find out how much it costs, and then decide its cheaper to tear it down and build a new one instead.

    btw what you’re calling a Den is actually what you want to call the Family Room (the 2nd more practical Livng Room that the family actually spends time in) A Den is more like a man’s Home Office-ESPECIALLY since this is from the 70s (think Darren Stevens in Bewitched, where he did his drafting & copywriting work when he needed to work at home on the weekends)

      Those mansions have many rooms we just don’t have any more. Often there is a parlor off the foyer where you talk to salesmen or guests you don’t know well, didn’t invite or don’t like. I don’t know the modern name for that… there’s usually a family room off the eat in kitchen. That’s the day to day kitchen for family meals, maybe a separate room for family meals, a large formal dining room, den, library, formal living room, maybe a game room, reading nook. Master bed and bath is called the primary not master any more 😊
