- People with Macular Degeneration, Stargardt Disease, Diabetic Retinopathy, Albinism and other conditions often tell me how difficult it is to see distant objects. They can't recognize friend's faces. They can't enjoy watching sports or live theater. They'd like to see their children or grandchildren better when they are playing sports. And of course, they have often had to give up driving. They are losing their independence.
Bioptic telescopic glasses can help many people with impaired vision see better so they can enjoy these things that are so important to them.

It was nice watching your video on this wonderful option for low vision people. I have low vision and have been wearing the Beecher binocular at work for almost 20 years. Now with the developments in new technology, just wondering if there is something you know which is lighter weighted, more powerful and flexible (auto-focusing). For example, the telescope in this video, can it be used for the computer?

Thanks for watching the video and for your question. Bioptic telescopic glasses are primarily for distance vision like driving, watching sports, recognizing peoples faces. They are not well suited for use at a computer. A different type of telescopic glasses with a larger field of view and positioned lower in the frame works much better at a computer. I am not familiar with the Beecher so I cannot compare weight or power. Auto focusing telescopic glasses do not have a large enough field of view to be practical for the computer.

There is nothing that will correct homomymous hemianopsia. Some types of prism glasses allow people to be aware of objects in the blind field. I do not know how to access them in your country. I'd ask your eye doctor if I were you.

Hello, Dr. David Armstrong, could you advise whether we should opt for telescopic glasses or prismatic lenses for a patient with macular degeneration who experiences a black spot in the center of their vision?
The patient may benefit from both or neither. Prismatics and telescopic glasses are very different and are for different purposes. The patient needs a low vision evaluation by a doctor who has the skills and experience to determine the best way to help.
So there is so much minus the decision made is to not grind it in to the lens due to distortion, and this is the cheapest way to fix WO spending money on a myodisc?, or are they relativeley close in price?

Yes, I have helped many people with those problems. It all depends on how much vision you have remaining. By doing a low vision evaluation a low vision optometrist will be able to show you how much help bioptic glasses will give you.

Good questions. Thanks for watching the video. As you can see, there are quite a number of types and powers of bioptic telescopic glasses. The only way to know if they will help you and which is the best one for you is to have a low vision evaluation by an optometrist skilled in helping people with low vision. I don't know if this will help in Pakistan but you should try Googling "Low Vision". That may help you locate a doctor near you. I hope it does. Good luck.

It depends on how much vision you have remaining and how you need to use them. Those are questions that can be addressed by a visit to a low vision optometrist. By carefully evaluating your vision the doctor will be able to prescribe the bioptic telescopic glasses that will best suit your needs. Consult a doctor in your area for help.

A very good question. Bioptic telescopes are mounted near the top of the regular lenses and are used for distance vision.
Different types of telescopes can be prescribed to use for reading. They are mounted lower in the main lenses.
