  • People with impaired vision from Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Stargardt Disease and other eye conditions often come to Dr. David Armstrong seeking his help so they can continue driving safely and legally. They are concerned about losing their independence. Dr. Armstrong, a low vision optometrist in Virginia has extensive experience in prescribing bioptic telescopic glasses which Virginia and many other states allow people with low vision to use for driving. Dr. Armstrong is very familiar with the process of obtaining a bioptic telescope driver's permit and often helps people with low vision meet DMV requirements to continue driving. In this video Dr. David Armstrong demonstrates how bioptic telescopic glasses are used for driving.
    Come along for the ride as Dr. Armstrong discusses driving with bioptics. You will have the opportunity to look through the glasses and see how the telescopes work. Dr. Armstrong sees low vision patients in offices in Roanoke, Dublin, and Waynesboro, VA.
    Call Dr. Armstrong for a free telephone consultation. He'll tell you if telescopic glasses will help you keep driving. 866-321-2030. More information at VirginiaLowVision.com

    Olá Dr David, tudo bem ?Hi Dr David, how are you?
    I'm from Brazil but I'm planning to move to San Diego, California
    I have low vision with right eye 20/160 and left eye 20/125 only in the central part, my peripheral vision is not affected
    Here in Brazil I drive, with some restrictions, without taking the roads, but on the streets and avenues I drive normally
    Can you tell me if with my medical report and my biotic glasses purchased here in Brazil, I can regularize my driver's license at the DMV in San Diego?
    From what I've researched, having a car and range of motion in San Diego is very necessary, that's why I want to have my drive license when I'm living there
    Thank you very much

    I have albanism with 20/200 on both sides. I am quite independent, I do drive with my natural limitations but not be able to read sign boards, hordings, number plates, or any reading material and when the traffic is being controlled by officers using hand signals.
    There is no such facilities/technology here in Pakistan to help low vision. The only things that are available is hand held megnifires with limited magnification and windows magnifier for screen reading.
    What do you suggest and how can I get these bioptics.

      @dr.davidarmstrong5881  Před 4 lety

      I am not sure how to advise you. You do sound like you would benefit from bioptic telescopic glasses. They are prescribed by seeing a doctor who understands low vision and telescopic glasses. The doctor will evaluate your vision and determine what power and type of bioptics will serve your needs best. Then careful measurements are taken to be sure that the telescopes are properly positioned for you. There is really no way to do this without seeing a low vision doctor. I am sorry that you can't find a doctor in Pakistan to help you. Good luck to you. Drive safely.

  • @dr.davidarmstrong5881
    @dr.davidarmstrong5881  Před 9 lety +1

    That is an interesting use of bioptics. Much quicker to spot an animal. Just point your face toward the animal, lower your chin and you are in the telescopes. No problem hiking with them. The scopes do not interfere with walking. They go up to 6x but higher powers have rather limited field of view. I am wearing 2.2x in the video. Go to a low vision doc who will let you try them before ordering and who knows how to take the measurements. Have fun. I'd like to hear how you like them.

    Out of curiosity, regarding different levels of "low vision" eyesight, how does one plan for parking (ie, side-entrance, or rear parking)? That is aside from the usual car technology that assists with parking?

    • @dr.davidarmstrong5881
      @dr.davidarmstrong5881  Před 4 lety +1

      Good question. I think that how you can safely park will depend on the nature of your vision loss. Is the loss central, peripheral, left or right or overall. In Virginia I do not think that the DMV tests a person's ability to park when they are evaluating their ability to obtain a Bioptic Telescopic Lens Driver's License. If that is a concern to you I'd recommend that you consult an occupational therapist who deals with low vision or a driving instructor familiar with driving with bioptic telescopic glasses.
      I hope that helps. Good luck.

      @dr.davidarmstrong5881  Před 7 lety +3

      Yes. You probably meet the vision requirements. Virginia requires 20/200 in one eye. The vision in the better eye must improve to at lease 20/70 with bioptic telescopic glasses. The requirements for peripheral vision (visual fields) depend upon what has caused your vision loss. My offices are in Virginia and I often prescribe bioptic telescopic glasses so people can meet the DMVs requirements for a bioptic driver's permit. Why don't you call me and we can talk about your remaining vision and the cause of your vision loss. I'll tell you if you are a candidate for driving. There is no charge for the phone consultation. 866 321-2030

    I am a driving instructor in Phoenix AZ and have a student that is going through a company located here for training to drive with these. She's had 40 hours and isn't able to determine when to brake till she's a few feet away from the sstopped vehicle or crosswalk, also unable to maintain her lane. By increasing the magnification it distorts your ability to know exactly how far something is so you brake prematurely thinking the object is a lot closer than it really is. I believe that the risk of an accident greatly outweighs the freedom of being on your own to drive as one mistake can be deadly for others as well as yourself. Taking her out for 2 hours and over 40 miles, she demonstrated an inability to center the vehicle and to stop safely at lights where as i had to use my instructor brake and center the car for her. With 12 years of teaching experiece i believe this is a hindrance to her and the company she is using is doing a great disservice to her and accepting the $180 per 90 minute session

    • @dr.davidarmstrong5881
      @dr.davidarmstrong5881  Před 4 lety +2

      Thanks Henry for your observations. I totally agree that not everyone who meets their state's vision requirement with bioptic glasses is suited for driving. The lady that you mention does not sound like someone who should be driving. I think that the low vision doctor who evaluated her vision and the driving instructors have an obligation to tell people when the doubt their ability to drive safely. After 40 hours of driver training with the bioptics it does not sound like she's likely to improve. There have certainly been many cases where I've told someone that although they meet DMV vision requirements they should probably let someone else do the driving. I do not encourage someone who I do not think is capable of safe driving with the bioptics. In my state, Virginia, and others that I am familiar with the person must pass a driving test given by DMV before being licensed to drive with the bioptics. I do not know what AZ requires but this lady is not likely to pass a driving test. The low vision doctor is responsible for giving DMV the person's visual acuity with and without the bioptics as well as their visual field. DMV determines if the person is suited to drive. It does sound like the driver training company is taking advantage of her. I appreciate your comment.

      visually ability can be helpful to think of as a spectrum as there are multiple causes for an individual to have low vision and no two people may have the same visually abilities. But with these glasses specifically gauging stopping distance would probably be done using the main sense where as spotting the car initially could be done with the magnified part. Driving may not be best for everyone but lets not generalize a group of individuals.

If you google bioptic driving or driving with bioptic telescopic glasses you will find lots of info. Then google low vision doctors to find someone in you area who may be able to help you. Ask if they prescribe bioptics for driving before you schedule an appointment. You should be able to get info about the requirements in Arkansas from your DMV. @dr.davidarmstrong5881  Před 4 lety +2

      Thanks for the comment. Bioptic telescopic glasses are prescribed by a low vision optometrist. They are complex optical devices which require a doctor with an understanding of vision loss and the various types and powers of the telescopes. There is not a trial set that you can use to do it yourself. Additionally, states that license people to drive with bioptic glasses require certification by an optometrist or ophthalmologist that the glasses provide adequate vision to meet DMV standards. You need to find a low vision optometrist near you who can help you. I recommend that you check the website IALVS.com for a directory of low vision doctors. There may be one who is near you. Good luck.
