    My V2 8s Xmaxx has yet to kill them, and it has eaten pretty much everything I put in it. It rocks a Max5 with the 800kv geared 35/37. Lots of power. I did kill one set when I vaporized the rear pinion bearing. But I just rounded the teeth, but didn't actually break them.

  • @NicholsonNitroWorks
    @NicholsonNitroWorks Před rokem +2

    It seems they should to be improved for strength. Maybe a different material can be used. Stock gears are only $40 a set and they break to. You broke these in one set of batteries I’m assuming in the video.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  Před rokem +2

      No I ran them for a few sets finally broke them doing something really stupid. Accelerating at full speed backwards and then immediately transferring to full speed forwards is about as hard as you can be on a gear. I was trying see how far they could go.
      I've tried pretty much every gear option there is for these trucks and in my opinion these are the best. They're not indestructible but when you're putting those kinds of forces on a gear that can only be so large with a truck that is as heavy as mine something's going to give.

    • @NicholsonNitroWorks
      @NicholsonNitroWorks Před rokem +1

      Running them for multiple sessions changes things. Yes the sudden impact of full reverse then full forward power then the flip with free wheel acceleration and the jarring landing is brutal on the ring gears. The impact might not have damaged the gears if you think about it. The reverse could have pull the pinion out causing massive misalignment thus the damage. The teeth could have literally sheared themselves apart from the misalignment. Maybe a collar around the pinion on the other side of the thrust bearing will keep it from extracting itself. Seems super strong going fowards though. So your right most the time we aren’t bashing in reverse. Please get another set and bash it only going towards to see if they are unbreakable that way. Or use the same set with broken teeth and see if they keep on going!!!!

    • @DoRC

      Actually race cars use straight cut gears because they don't create axial forces which allows for more simple designs in the gearboxes. Helical gears are stronger but require a more complex design.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  Před 8 měsíci +3

      This is a tough one. I've tried basically every set of upgrade gears out there and honestly I still keep going back to the stock ones. A properly shimmed set of stock gears with an aluminum differential housing and an aluminum differential cover to stiffen everything up really is a durable option. It's also a heck of a lot cheaper to replace when something does break.

    • @s21killah
      @s21killah Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@DoRC thanks! I'm not surprised with that. I figured it's probably best to allow the easiest accessible gears to be the weaker point of drivetrain.

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC  Před 8 měsíci +1

      @s21killah Yeah that seems reasonable. Having stronger gears doesn't seem to make a lot of difference it's just that for some reason none of the manufacturers have really managed to make a gear set that seems like a massive improvement over the stock gears. If someone would just come out with gears that are identical to the stock gears but made out of stronger material they'd probably have a winner but for some reason everybody seems to want to go fancy with it.

      I don't have any experience with the V3 so I can't really give my opinion on them. So which set work best and last the longest in your opinion? I know the traxxas ones don't handle big can motors very long at all. With that said do you think pr racing gears will outlast vitavon gears if both are shimmed properly because let's face it these gears usually break when u land from a massive jump and your on the throttle or brake to correct the truck which sometimes is inevitable. Which one better spiral or straight gear for rc?

    • @DoRC

      There are arguments to be made for both. Spiral bevel gears are inherently stronger because They have more physical tooth area then straight gears do. They also have a smoother engagement which can be beneficial. That being said they are somewhat more susceptible to issues caused by misalignment which could be a problem.
