@@sf8334 Ya true but I think the motor just runs hot in general. It runs hot on the X-Maxx too and 1200KV is a bit much for 8S LiPo. This motor has never really been the best idea, something like the HobbyWing 5687-SL 1100KV would probably run much smoother and much cooler.

Great content, new to your channel. Did you gear down your pinion to 19 when you put on the sledge hammer tires, or did you run 20/50 and watch temps?
Hello! I took the tuning pins off my XMAXX motor and never broke the gears again; the old paper sheet system reduces the play between pinion and crown which with pins is too large. I will do the same with my XRT. Try to believe!😉

I'm glad that you didn't talk trash on Traxxas gears, they do wear out, and strip but we pound the hell out of these trucks, I have a Xmaxx that's got factory gears for the last year, I jump, bash and beat it up, still factory gears...great vid....Traxxas👍👍
The ring and pinion gears are pot metal crap. But the Traxxas machined ones are pretty nice

Looks like the grub screw on the pinion backed itself out and that’s what caused the gears to strip. Not the flex in the chassis or the hard hit. It may have contributed to it. Make sure to check things like that before running for the first time and maybe even re loctite it. 👍🏻

Friend of mines did the exact same thing within 15 minutes of driving and not near as hard on it as you guys!
The pin labels are what tells you where to position it based on which gears you're using. H for example is for 16/54 teeth, where I is for 26/46... They used to label them with the "key" showing which positions for the different gears.
Great video. Yes the XRT is a beast. Broken pinion and spur is nothing for the abuse you did. Im not going to do that with mine. But very greaful you should just how awesome it is. Thanks

Those gears are very low quality sintered metal gears rather than hardened steel.
Stripped them minutes into my first run on grass. No jumps or hammering the throttle.
Traxxas makes good stuff but their gears are abysmal. Definitely considering the price tag.
They didn’t strip because you landed hard on concrete. They stripped because you landed on throttle when the chassis flexed
I get chassis flex but I was just running a brand new XRT. As I’m driving it to “ break in” and warm up to it, the gears didn’t exact same thing. All I was doing was spring up and down my road. lol. Not even jumping just driving. My first Traxxas I bought myself. I’ve been running kratons for a while and nothing broke. One warmup run a couple small wheelies and screeech. lol.

How are the motor bearings after that? Whenever I have gear stripping issues on the X-Maxx, quite often the motor bearing closest to the pinion has gotten sloppy from big jumps and wrecks the mesh.
The motor bearings did not have any noticeable slop. Perhaps we need to jump it higher next time.
I'm thinking about getting either an x-max or the xrt how many times do you think you can actually slam it like that before the chassis breaks
I nearly got a xrt, it would of being an annoying expensive mistake. I bought the sledge and it's faster and stronger.

Hey guys I’m new to the XRT I got one used on marketplace I put a brand new spur gear smaller one on and only lasted about 10 mins in front on my house now stripped again, I can figure out how to adjust mesh how much play in the gear I tried taking the motor out and trying to get it better but no luck
A extra large Rustler, wonder if that what the XRT stand for, Xtra Rustler Truggy. I think it was the sudden stop when landing that stripped out the gears. When you were back flipping it you had it full throttle and when you landed yes you were off the throttle but everything came to a extreme stop. The motor is like a wood working trim router motor and even though the drive train came to a stop that motor was spinning probably 60,000 rpm's a stop so suddenly it took out the teeth. I have seen guys do this with routers and either rips out of their hand or bends a motor shaft. Gears are much cheaper than a motor, upgrading to harder steel gears might work but in my experience weak links are designed for a reason. That being said you don't want it breaking every time you take it out and with my son's limited driving skills I have up graded certain things to avoid that. Concrete and RC's don't play well together so I avoid skate parks with big vehicles and use 1/16 size but still have to use commonsense. Showing off to bystander to show durability and stunt skills is my weakness.

I found that the high speed gears that come with the Xrt 23/46 did not mess well at all
U got lucky I just watched a guy do the same thing and had to replace the whole rear end but he did it on grass and the thing blew up when he landed and sent gear though everything.
its a reason is called traxxas steel! They really need to uppgrade their steel compound!

If I have 2 Traxxas cars and plan on getting more. What is a good aftermarket controller that will let me take one controller that will allow me to drive all my cars with it? One at a time of course.
A Traxxas TQi Transmitter can talk to over 20 vehicles.
How come you put stock replacements back on? There are better more durable options out there. Also, the pinion just slipped off? How loose was the grub screw? How come no red lock tite on the grub screw going back together?

I have five Traxxas trucks and ALL OF THEM have had to be serviced for one thing or another and none are over a year old. Are they FAST oh yeah but could I refer them to a buddy no unless they like fixing them every time they take em for a run. Its like Traxxas designs them to break so you can buy the parts that should have been on the truck in the beginning. I'm glad I have a hobby shop that will fix whatever problem I have with my Traxxas and they do it free of charge.
I wonder if the larger tires increased the load on the gears. I believe you went to more aggressive tires and maybe larger in diameter to.

Shock Load from when you landed flat. So the wheels and drivetrain was spinning and comes to a complete STOP!!!!!!
Uuhhh... yeah... the Sledge is more solid than the XRT. the XRT is nice and all but the Sledge can take way more punishment and still be good, goes faster, can bash, and won't have a problem with terrain. I think I'll wait till Traxxas does an V2 of the XRT for it to be more robust
The xrt would of being a big mistake for me. The sledge has being amazing. I couldn't of made a better choice.

Same problem with traxxas xmaxx. The traxxas gear quality is so awful. It keep breaking. You can try with hot racing gear or high quality metal gear then this problem will stop
Yes i know the pinion and spur stripping is very good for the amount of abuse that u gave it, but why not upgrade it to better spurs and pinions hot racing, gds, or other brands make, then nothing is going to break if u gave it the exact same amount of abuse, so yea it is good that onyl the spur and pinion broke, but wont you be frustrated if it broke every run and every time u have to change it, and it is no doubt traxxas metal is really bad for their gears compared to other brands and they simply cannot hold up to the trucks weight and force. Every single person who i know who owns an x-maxx has at least had gear issues twice with stokc gears and im starting to doubt traxxas is purposely doing this so they still have guaranteed income if people buy their replacement gears. If this is not true, explainto me why they made hardened diff gears for example and then stopped making them after, only making hardened pinions gears but not spur gears in the same mod1 size, when they clearly have the materials and are able to do so but then stopped making them, but still make them for other vehicles which dont have gear issues in the beginning but make hardened gears? Explain, this is the best explanation i can come up with, and i dont blame them, money is still their main objective, business is just like that. Anyways if i were u i think we need to stop lying to ourselves here and just accept the fact traxxas gears just suck, period, replace them. Also it is really easy for you to get gears if you want as you are a hobbyshop and could easily get a hot racing spur and robinson racing pinion as u guys are supplied by amain or at least yr website is so yea, future mod, easily don to eliminate gear problems which is the most important upgrade for an xmaxx and xrt for sure

The pinion was obviously loose the body didn't flex the pinion came loose and stripped both the Pinion and spur

I'm not tryin to bash Traxxas, but this is a chronic issue with most of their vehicles. Because they're almost all plastic, that chassis flex keeps happening and keeps the issues occurring. It's cheap to fix, but it becomes a chronic issue the more you play with it. They need to engineer some braces that will actually work. I see the same issues with the 4x4 stampede, slash, hoss and maxx series.
Traxxas is the modern Tyco.
Try using a dab of red lock tite. I have all those cars and quite a few more from Traxxas never had a issue with any except my Xmaxx and that was my fault. XRT seems completely fine also. Check them more l would say or tighten them more and let your lock tite sit for 24 hours minimum.
@@rcsmith5909I use red loctite too. It's not the pinion coming loose, it's usually the plastic chassis flexing on impact that causes the pinion and spur to flex and break. It all depends on how hard people are on their rigs.

I almost bought one but thanks to your video that shows it bottoming out on concrete I won't now. It's just too heavy to have a low CG chassis and obviously the shocks don't have enough travel either.

Well, let's be real here for a sec, what this guy is saying at 1:26 it's completely misleading, those gears striped because they're not hardened steel, and that's an unacceptable flaw for a car in this price range. Every traxxas owner knows how garbage those sintered gears are.
I've had the same gears in my Maxx for over a year and the only time I had a problem was when I got lazy and used self-righting. If you treat em right, they're great.
@@bazis98 The whole point of Traxxas X-vehicles is extreme bashing. The stock gears are not designed for that. Don't see why everyone is arguing here. Upgraded hardened steel years are like $50 for spur and pinion. Not a big deal, chuck them in and be done with it.
Training mode will make any RC last for years.....all of mine are in training mode..50% throttle mode...I want to enjoy it, not overhaul it every run

The youtube RC scene is full of traxxas apologizers, their 1/5 scale products are garbage and constantly break, gear stripping, and even lighting on fire during fundamental bashing. The same goes for Arrma with their 1/5 scale lineup, it's simple physics, these RC's are massive and heavy, and they can't take a consistent bashing. If you're going to spend a grand, get one of the Losi 1/5 DBXL or the 5ive-T. The sweet spot for bashing is 1/7, 1/8, 1/10, and even some 1/14 scale RC's are more durable, but to each his or her own.

I've seen a couple videos now where you defend the XRT/Xmaxx crappy pot metal gears that strip for literally everybody. Why do you defend these obvious low quality components so much?
Don't get me wrong, I think both are great trucks overall (I own an XRT myself), but this one specific thing is an obvious weak point and Traxxas really has no excuse for not shipping these trucks with machined hardened steel gears to fix this issue. It has been known for a LONG time that these break very very easily even by experienced drivers who aren't bashing particularly hard. Everything else about these trucks is great. It's just comical that you keep defending this design when I've literally never once in my life have I heard of an XRT/Xmaxx owner that hasn't stripped a set or two of these gears before finally upgrading to hardened steel and never looking back. Even Traxxas themselves knows the design is bad because in the "Ultimate" version of each of these trucks you get machined hardened steel gears.
