  • Of all of the spaces I'm most excited about having in my house, the backyard climbs to the top of the list. I am SO excited to be starting our DIY deck makeover and finally creating a space that we can enjoy outdoors! In this part of this project, I'm tackling deck demo, refinishing, and rebuilding the bottom of the deck. And, I was able to do it all by myself thanks to the deck sander and pressure washer I was able to rent from The Home Depot Rental!
    This project is sponsored by my amazing friends at The Home Depot Rental!

    Hey friends! Sorry in advance -- wrestling with some audio issues in this video 😫. If you're listening with earbuds, please use both of them! Some of the audio seems to only be coming out of one speaker. Working on fixing this for the next one.
    Thanks for being so patient with me and for all of the support! See you so soon with part 2! 💓

      For real, the first time we did it, it took 2 days. From then on we’ve rented a floor sander from Home Depot (a square sheet sander) and it takes about 2 hours for an 800 sqft deck.

    • @jeremyspecce
      @jeremyspecce Před rokem

      OK, so, clearly I wrote that very early on in the video, the one we rented is kind of similar but I feel like the pads were twice the size. Also, our deck is stained, not painted.

    I've never been a big fan of decks, mostly because I grew up in the 70s and 80s, helping my Dad (who was a carpenter in summers, since he was a teacher during the school year) build decks, and they all kind of looked like your first deck. Lattice, very country kitsch kind of details, but this deck is so modern and so sleek that I now see it's a style thing to me, and not just an, "I hate decks," thing. Lovely work!

    I like your design choices, Sam. The lattice had to go. It has a nice nostalgic look that belongs in coastal areas, but it looks rickety and untidy after a while. The revised deck looks solid and durable.

    Sam, I had PTSD seeing that LOL. My wife and I had to gut part of our deck since the posts were dumped on railroad ties -> can't imagine why that was a bad idea. So we basically had to tear it all down and rebuild. It was exhausting so I feel for you. Great work. Now contact Vans and tell them they need to sponsor you! :)

But inspires me to look into re-doing the stairs to my front porch. They have been BUGGING me. But I need to decide on what I want to do regarding railing around my front porch. When I ripped them off I was in love with the more open look, but I don’t know. I have decisions to make for SURE.

    Hard work. However, I like the urban European trend you used for the horizontal boards on your deck. I have seen it used on screens or featured walls. In your case, you could plant several things along the side of the deck, which would look nice in contrast to those horizontal boards. I also like that you carried the design to the stairs as well; nice. Oh, you probably can rent a wood steamer to help those warped boards get back into shape; not perfect, but better. Consider yourself privileged for having the Home Depot rental center. Because I live in a border city next to Mexico, our Home Depot has never had a rental center. They are afraid they would lose all the equipment through theft. There may be other rental places, but I don't know of them. For the most part, almost everyone will buy their equipment or borrow it from a true friend. I can't wait to see what you will do with the railings. Rich Blessings

  • @billparrish4385
    @billparrish4385 Před rokem

    Very nice job on the deck! Lot of hard work, and solid techniques. Plus you always have an enjoyable and informative editing style, composition for your shots, narration, photography, etc. Really pro-level videos!
    I think a lot of DIYers would attempt to salvage some parts of a deck that has rotten pieces here and there, given the prohibitive cost of lumber these days, and would find videos demonstrating the right ways to perform such techniques very useful. Taking the steps as an example, if the rot was only on the bottom parts touching and near the ground, and the rest of the steps solid with many years of life left in them, someone should not sacrifice safety thinking they had to replace 'all or nothing' on their own steps, and go longer with the 'nothing' while saving up funds, when leaving the rotted base in place during that time may be an accident waiting to happen. To do that repair, I might 'sister' (i.e., glue and screw) 18" chunks of the same size framing material onto the inside surfaces of those stringers to have solid wood go all the way to the ground again, then cut away the 2-3 inches of rot on the stringer ends and fill in with a patch of the same material fastened to the 'sister' piece.
    Anyway, just an idea. Given the economics involved these days, how to correctly repair a partially-weathered or rotted part of a project, versus replacing the whole thing is certainly a timely topic, and I imagine would produce guaranteed views for your most-excellent channel. Regardless if you think there's merit to the idea, I wish you continued success with your channel, and keep up the good work!.

      I actually have access to under the deck from one of the sides! I actually kept a small section open by our AC unit and you can’t see it because I have a small cover around the AC unit. We won’t be storing anything underneath ours because I wanted access to all of the waterlines that are under the deck for the shower and the hose. But, you can totally still do this and create an access point on the side.

    Good job! Looks great. One little thing. You said you used 12 x 1 boards for the steps but I'm pretty sure those were 12 x 2s. Or else I want to know where you can buy 1" boards that thick!

    Just found you on CZcams. Watching this video and I think I missed what kind and color stain you used. Please do tell me😁 and thank you so much!

    Why a pad sander..apposed to drum sander? I've refinished hardwood floors and started with drum

    Did you consider replacing the boards with composite boards or something after the paint removal didn’t work? I’d imagine cost was the biggest reason to not do this perhaps? Love the videos on the house reno so far!!!

      I did, but the cost was unreal. It ended up working out though! Can’t wait to share!

    It looks beautiful! ! What was the outside shower for? Hot tub, pet bathing? Inquiring minds want to know. lol

      Hahaha - forgot to mention that! The house came with a hot tub, but we opted not to keep it. We will be putting an outdoor shower back in though once the deck is done!

    The deck and wrapping boards looks great but I'm wondering whether it was wise to put the bottom boards so close to the ground. Won't they rot or encourage termites?

    Are you concerned that the base and floor of the deck are also rotted?

    Home Depot twice in one day on a weekend? Girl, that’s nothing! Try 4 times; for plumbing! 🤣🤣🤣 Never do plumbing on a Sunday. 😭😭😭
    Nice job!

    I'm surprised they didn't put the steps on footers to stop it from absorbing moisture from the ground.

      Yeah, I was kind of bummed. All good! Now they’re sitting on a pressure treated footer on stone instead of grass. So, hopefully they’ll last a long time to come!

      Are you listening with only one earbud in? I'm watching back and realizing it sounds like it's only coming out of one speaker? Will have to look into this! Sorry about that!

      @@diyhuntress Omg yes lol. My left earbud is broken... that explains it. But I've never had a problem with your videos with one earbud before? I'll try to find another pair of earbuds and rewatch. Thank you!
