Nico the Watch Guy @NicoLeonard knows mechanical engineering - as a watch expert he can pull apart a Swiss Watch and actually re-assemble it in the right order. (Off camera.. he let slip that he even DESIGNS watches too) so he should be able to spot the difference between a lemon 🍋 and a supercar. Ahem.
However.. he bought James's Porsche GT3 on spec without actually seeing it, let alone driving it. When the car arrived - it surprised Nico when he noticed that the car was BRIGHT YELLOW - not having seen a photo of the beast LOL. But that's ok - as long as it handles.
However.. on the way to the Gumball hill climb at Shelsey Walsh - the weather did something it has NEVER done in the history of these islands, by raining. 🌧☔ It was at this point that Nico noticed something unusual about his Porsche - when the rear end developed a mind of its own and tried to overtake him. After a change of underpants - Nico brought me to his car for a run up the hill to assess the modifications (mostly camber & suspension) to his car and give it full send.
Then we checked out my New Lancia. Let me know what you think would be the ultimate Gumball machine and I'll see if I can get one into the show next year 😜

"Restoration is frowned upon" well thats only if you give a shit about the snobbery of other "watch people" put it this way, if i had a Rolex that i'd wore everday, swam in the ocean etc etc the same amount of years that lancia's been on the road and it looked like total shit but it has gave me years of reliable service then I would have it "redone" regardless of what it would do to "value" cos its MINES, its not looked at as an investment mindset.
Much like bens had his Lancia redone, its about keeping it functional, operational roadworthy etc, I couldnt give a shit about originality or other peoples opinion, sure it'd be "nice to have" but then you'd need to be keeping it in a box preserving it and worshipping it and not using it which for me is where the joy comes from, I'm not going to drive a car thats basically a deathtrap cause its "all original, never been messed with" only an idiot would do that, if it needs sills doing cos its seen 20 british winters with road salt then you have to at some point say "fuck it" and cut the cancer out otherwise in the next 20 all you'll have is a pile of rust and a Lancia badge.

I’ve long said that removing the tech and super wide tires, etc makes a car more engaging as a daily driver. Just look at the MX-5 and similar cars. Not terribly expensive but a lot of fun. I’d love to have an older car such as that Lancia or something equally entertaining to drive every day.
yep - that and the super stiff handling which is great on a track but useless when you need agility on a tight lane

Seeing a lancia driving around gumball with all these new modern super and hyper cars would be the car that stands out the most. Honestly I couldn’t see a better choice.

I test drove the intergrally back in the 80s and nothing stuck to the road like it, magic car !

Can see you really like this car , enjoy driving it as you intended , restorations are a struggle to get exactly how you want and it’s the details that take time to get right it can be as I found. Out a live hate but as you said brings a smile to your face when driven .

This is TOTALLY a Gumball car: it's uniquely characterful, oozes charm and personality, is a well aged classic with astonishing pedigree, and with the driver to match all those qualities in you, it could well win the Gumball trophy. I'd even put money on it doing so. It will also look wicked in the Gumball decals. 🏁

Some of my best television memories with my son was when we watched Top Gear.
Surely an e30 m3 would be alot better as a gumball car. Its a nice example of an evo you have but whilst they were good rally cars I was never really smitten on them. Give me an s1 or a 6r4 anyday.

As far as interiors go...I think I prefer the rainbow velour Lancia material over that particular style of leather, just suits the car better IMO, the Evo II seats with the shoulder supports would probably be the choice i'd want but i'd imagine they'd be ££££
Bring on more of your integrale content, I miss my old evo 1 which was the same colour as yours. I had to also hand the engine rebuilt but went slightly further than yours, mine was rolling on white 17" compomotive rally spec rims

Love the looks of that Lancia, but then I first saw that styling on a fox body Mercury Capri. For me here in the states it’s what came across my radar first. Still like the Capri better ,cool car Ben.

I remember every day walking back from school I would cut through a hospital, I would often see this delta driven by I think a doctor. He must have been a true petrolhead because he had a first gen m3 also. He used to blip the engine as he left, I used to dream of getting one of those cars when I was older, 40 years on I am still dreaming 😂😂
Ben, what have they done to help preserve the body. Lancia's had a terrible - and deserved - reputation for rust. Back in the day I had a rallly-spec Fulvia and it was basically more soluble than aspirin.

love the LHD - someone was telling me a load were converted to RHD in the UK which is burn-at-the-stake I think
Mike Spence was the importer and converted a few to RHD (my first integrale was an 8V converted by them), they were compromised by having to use a Fiat Regatta steering rack and linkages to move all the pedals etc to right side. Always felt fragile through the wheel because of that but still a fabulous drivers car.
You should have a Lancia that’s proper modern group b spec. Where the suspension is more than most cars and it has rolling anti lag

If I were doing a rally I would do it on a bike or a trike actually because I am old if I took a car it would be something like a Lincoln Continental or town car, maybe a caddie that has been resto-moded. Large car lots of room big overstuffed seats, you can sleep in the back seat, big trunk to carry food and drink, minimal electrics to go wrong, no sensors or computers to go wrong.
I would love to see you do a rally or put a team together with Abby and do some endurance racing, LeMan series perhaps. As for your Lancia I have probably never been within a hundred miles of one but it is small so for two grown men it is going to uncomfortable on a long drive day in and day out maybe a Bentley Continental GT?
