The UGLY Truth About Gassers - Nose High Or No Thanks!

- čas přidán 5. 04. 2023
- So I've been working away on my 1955 Chevy Nomad lately. In passing I've been calling it a "Gasser". So many people have let me know just how wrong I am.
"That's not a gasser! Where's the straight axle?"
Figured I'd make a quick video with a little back story on how "gassers" got their name
Am I wrong? Comment below, maybe I'll learn a thing or 2...

Your not a poser , your a hot rodder , a fabricator , a guy who takes cars and makes them 💯 bad ass . Cheers 🇨🇦
Hey Dan it's Allen Willis I just sent you a message I did it by Speaker and my shity Boston accent it's screwed a few words up but I hope you got the gist of it and the Star Chief is a 55
Dan is a tire slapper...... when he is lecturing ......LOL
YOU'RE
As busy as you are Dan. I don't know how you ever find the time to watch Uncle Tony or any other channels. With work, your own channel, and time with Danny. Props to you, man.
Gas classes were originally for lightly modified stock vehicles, generally street driven. So you could hop up your daily driver a bit and still had a class to run it in at the drags. As the rules kept getting pushed, it got to be the purpose built, nose high, beam axle race car that most people think of when they hear Gasser.
Yep had to have working equipment like lights, horns , wipers etc.
We,re in 2023 here......"I can identify it as anything I want" has to be the best one liner you could say dan!!!! I laughed my ass off! Lol
All the things going wrong today and people are worried and complaining about what you call your car🤣🤣🤣🤣. Call it what you want Dan and keep up the good work👍😎✌️
Great vid Dan, thank you, myself being an old guy growing up in the 60s and 70s dad would take us to the drags ,the cars evolved into what the younger generation calls gassers is different,I e straight axles, loud paint, better tires, more rules, and so on,again thank you, good day
I agree with you about the gassers. On another note, I tried watching the ads to help you out but CZcams sees you watch them and they put 10, 20, even 30 minute ads. It's crazy to watch an add that is longer than the video.
r@richball9576, I stopped watching anything longer than a standard TV comercial a long time ago! (1 minute ) I agree with you totally. I logon to watch content and refuse to watch ads that are longer than the CZcamsr's video.
@@grberendzenproductions312 Me--I watch the time clock, 1st, 15 sec max, followed by 2nd 6 sec then punch the "skip" button.
Do as you like and enjoy. I enjoy watching people with ideas other then mine to learn something new and different. Thanks for your content, my friend.
Hey Dan, there's a girl that has her own channel, " Riding with Alex Taylor". She's running a 55 Chevy and just broke into the 6's for the quarter mile. Anyway, her father has a mold for 55 one piece front ends. Maybe you can check out her videos and maybe see what he would charge you for a flip front end. He does awesome work and has his own bump shop. He also is going to be building a Nomad for the strip.
Take care and be safe. Happy Easter to you, Danielle, your family and all your subscribers.
I told him about Alex's channel when he bought the Nomad home and showed it to us. At the time i had the feeling he already new about all the others running 55 channel's. 2 time's in my life time Easter fall's on my Birth Day so it will be extra nice this year and Happy Easter to U and your as well.
She's on a totally different level than .Dan. Her life is about racing and Dan is about fixing the beaters
@@keithharden7844 doesnt mean Alex, and Dennis T wont work with him..Dennis is an old school hot rodder/gasser builder himself
@@L.A55 That's kinda what I was insinuating. Maybe he could contact them and get what needs to be dine
Thankyou Dan. As someone not terribly familiar with hotrodding I've been wandering for ages what a gasser is but was to embarrassed to ask
You are 100% right! When I bought my 57 150 back when I had gotten out of high school, 1973, its fenderwells were cut out and it had at least 10 spacers in the front springs and no bumpers! It had been a gasser!!
There's always going to be somebody with more money, more HPs and a faster car... It's all about the look. Cheers from the shed
The “hey it’s 2023 it can be whatever it wants to be” is just great 😂😂.
I will never figure out why Aholes will even watch something they don't like. Ask them where their video is so you can see theirs.
Dan, you are one of a kind and fun to watch. I am now re-educated about "Gasser's." My 6'7" uncle once had a 57 Pontiac Chief station wagon with arms and spindles modified to get the bumper way up there. I think it had a 427 BBC and 4-speed in it.
I recently repainted a semi-locally infamous gasser from back in the day. When I was done, the owner made me drive it (with a ton of arm twisting). Man, I can't tell you how much I love a legit gasser now!
I remember them days I started going to the Drag strip in 1965 and oval tracks in 1968 when my Dad started racing and spent the next 50 years racing as for technology it made things faster but I would say it also has ruined racing for many people cause technology cost money. Have a good day Dan and Dani
Great little history lesson! It’s too bad people do not do their homework before speaking out! For me I am a purist and like things to appear period correct but most modern Gassers are far from this. Big mistakes are 10 spoke 5 lug wheels (these were only offered in spindle mount in the day) a straight axle car that has been tubbed - aluminum radiators - billet brackets pedals and steering wheels - modern wheels - ls motors - cowl induction hood scoop or any other modern style hood scoop - modern style seats consoles drink holders. Any of the above just ruins a Gasser for me!
Just smile and wave Dan!
Great video explaining the Gasser.
So many people think if it doesn't have a straight axle it's not a Gasser.
They are dead wrong and should look up the history on racing.
55s looking good she's a Gasser for sure. Take care 👍🏻
Spot on Chris!
The majority of tri fives in the gasser classes late 50s through the 70s were A arm cars.
The street gasser look was never something I found pleasing. It was just not my thing but I will always appreciate all styles of hot rods. The effort and execution is a thing of beauty for me and the sound of a well tuned motor is near perfection. Keep going in YOUR direction.
Love the gasser. I’m old enough to remember these from the late 60’s and always loved them. In the early 70’s I started wrenching on them but unfortunately never did race them myself. Few of them actually had straight axels.
I think the look will be perfect and with the new set up it will have way more drive ability on the longer tips you have planed. Keep up the great work!!!!!
I hope you got live Saturday this week,... after all, it is holiday weekend . HAPPY EASTER

A gasser is two bowls of chili 😂
Did you say taco Bell 😊😊
Dan nice video on the actual gasser terminology of a gasser. I guess people have to make their comments if they are knowledgeable or not. It keeps this channel going makes it interesting so all the comments are good. Have a good day get your parts and have another video. We will surely watch
I don’t know if this is a comedy or a car show, but I love it!
I'm 77 and grew up with tri fives and drag racing in Sonoma County since I was a kid. I've had a slew of tri fives since 1978 and still love them...in the sixties I took engine rebuilding at JC and built an R code 427 out of a drag car. Installed it in my 59 Galaxy and immediately exploded the three speed. Another trip to the wrecking yard and scored everything from the blow proof Bell housing to the rear end out of a wrecked drag car. Left the column linkage dangling and would throw a jacket over the 4 speed shifter..had 352 valve covers and air cleaner..looked totally stock..what fun racing the Chevy 327's....used to cruise 4th street and was like American Graffiti at the time
I'm building my 57 for Drag Weeks B/Gas class...with A arms. Pretty much the exact front suspension you have, except I went with QA1 coilovers so I could adjust front height a little easier. For Drag Week I'll crank it up, and then bring it back down for "regular driving" after the event. There were plenty of A arm cars running in B/Gas last year. The big difference between A and B is B has to be NA, and carbed. A/gas is the Gasser class for power adders, EFI, etc. Both classes are meant to look as period correct as possible though.
Its hot rodding
Take pride in your ride
It’s yours
Most hatters/wisher/dreamers wish they had it with springs or axle
Hey Dan
Thanks for the info.
Happy Easter to you and Dannie
Take care
Great information, big guy. I am looking forward to watching your progress.
I bet you’ve been tempted to start one of these videos like “Gasser Dan here from DD Gasser Speed Shop. Gassers are my life…. “ 😂 I know I would’ve been tempted to!
Thank you for the amazing explanation. I came here looking to learn what the heck a "gasser" is, and your explanation is perfect. Terrific car, too!
This was a great segment with some excellent information Dan. Keep up the good work and the cool videos 👍✌️🇺🇲
it's amazing tom bailey, steve morris are running 5 second cars very close to being top fuel dragster speeds in a street car that shows how far technology has come in just the last 5 years
My boss in 1966 had a 55 Chevy D-Gas race car . Bored 327 , Tunnel Ram with 2- 4 barrels . Headers , 4-Speed and ladder bars . Stock suspension and the front end would lift but not get air . No wheelies in other words . Car ran good but he couldn't win very many races . I was 17 and drove one of his tri-axle dump trucks and helped wrench on the 55 and a 365 HP Corvette coupe . Corvette ran great but the 55 didn't do as well . I had ideas that would help the 55 but he told me I was crazy . I talked to a lot of the other gasser guys and got a lot of information as they thought I was just a kid that didn't have a gasser and they shared a lot of really good information that would have helped my boss but it never happened . The 55 gasser finally got parked in a garage as my boss was mad because he wasn't competitive enough and tired of throwing money in the car and not improving . That reminds me that I bet he might still have the 55 tucked away in his garage , that'll make me check on him and see if the 55 is still in his shop . Back to your Nomad , I think the tubular A-arms would be the only thing that would knock the car out of the gasser class if they went back to the 60's rule book . Roll bars and silly shit like that also but I know your not going that way anyway . Great video as always . Start putting the new parts on the car . The excuses of no parts is getting old . Just kidding as I know a lot of people are waiting on parts . It sucks but It's real . Y'all just need to move to ' MERICA ' . We don't have CUSTOM'S AGENTS outside O'ERIELLY'S PARTS STORES .
Very well explained I was 18 years old yesterday(it seems) and I woke up 60 years old and knew exactly what you were explaining. Haters gonna hate just keep doing what you are doing! I enjoy all the content.
Thank you!! I've been building a 39 ford deluxe 4 door sedan as a gasser and I recieved comments that it was the furthest thing from a gasser, I know in today's world everyone thinks a gasser is a Willy's , Anglia or a 55 Chevy lol, thank you for an awesome channel love you guys ! Keep up the awesome work man!
You are generally correct in your explanation of gasser. Tire technology being what it was early on
Dan..... Good Talk!!!!
That is gonna be one badass Nomad when Dan is done with it!
Happy Easter to you both! 😊
Personally I blame squirrels and anything Dan does 😀
Or those Trash Pandas.🦝🦝

Dan might be like Spiderman--he got bitten by a radioactive squirrel and this is why he can't run across the street without stopping!😆
Have you seen the video titled “I BLAME SQUIRRELS?” It’s two squirrels fighting in a tree. Now that that’s out of the way, I blame MOLES!!!!!
You do a great job on your cars.keep up the good job on the cars.
Makes sense to me. I would have called it a gasser without the history lesson. The lettering and nose high is all I needed
This Flamingo Gasser just needs a touch of glitter from Queen DD Speed Shop maybe pink 😁
Go Flamingo ! There will always be somebody who says something ....I like it
I own a '67 Ford F-100 with a 352 FE that identifies as a Prius.😅 Let the haters hate. Keep up the good work.👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
In the 60's as a young boy the straight axel mile high "street freaks" used to run the roads, and turned my head. Now being in my 60's that's probably why I turned out car crazy. While it was all about the look it squatted the back end to hook up better no doubt. Go for it Dan.
Aside from the haters, as a kid, I was gifted a subscription to Hot Rod magazine by an Aunt for a birthday. I loved it, and all the cars that were glammed out with outrageous paint and interiors. Not to mention the souped up engines with hood scoops and headers, turbos etc. I always wondered why they jacked up the front ends when I knew that aerodynamics called for low front ends to "cut through" the wind. Streamlining was my thing, with rear scoops to push the drive wheels down. But I totally get your love of the old high front gassers. It took me a while to learn that this was their way of "pushing down" the rear to add grab to the drive wheels. I've also developed a love of the "high front end" gassers. You do you and screw the haters! (and let Dani have her sparkly interior).
Love your videos❤❤ Awesome content
Very cool gasser knowledge! Thanks for sharing
I think your Gasser is very cool. Hope to see it running the roads in the good ol USA soon!
Great explanation but let's not forget that all nose high cars weren't all straight axle and leaf springs. The econo way was with ball joint spacers, a-arms, and coil springs. Not the safest way by any means, but a lot of guys ran them just the same. Cheap, and transfer the weight to the rear.
Great job Dan. Loved the video
The original gassers had to have full street equipment, all lights, full interior, etc. They just were limited to running on gasoline, like you said, hence "gasser".
As for drag week, the A gas cars are the supercharged cars and the B gas are naturally aspirated.
Dan, it doesn't matter to me, what you call your cars, SO, are you saying this is a gasser style or gasser inspired? I mean really, to be splitting hairs Dan. This car was a memory, when you bought it..
Look at it now!!!
I'm diggin' this SO MADD!!!
It's yours man, you say it's a gasser, then that's what it is. Mine is a gasser too! Let someone say it ain't cuz whatever Idgaf lol.
I wonder if we get jammed up for drag week on modern 5 speeds or not? That's my worry for the local nostalgic stuff. Who knows
Do it the way YOU want it. I always did. Personally, I love it, and I follow you, Puddin, Brent, and Fab Rats religiously. I would buy the Nomad or the other wagon from you when you're done with them
Do what makes you happy. I had a 1974 Olds Omega with nose up, econoline axle, cadillac 500 and cage. Few people pointed out how it wasn't "real". Most thought it was bad ass. And it was cheap to build.
In High School I ran with a bunch of Posers who would occasionally run their cars at Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip in East Ridge (Chattanooga) Tennessee. They would hang out at Hardee's on Friday and Saturday nights with their hoods up for everyone to ogle. There were lots of chrome valve covers and breathers, and people would OOh and Ahh about the cars. The real drag racers
Would never let anyone see under the hood when they street or Strip raced for "Pink slips" or titles. Derek Beeri of Vice Grip Garage bought a highly modified Gasser AMC Rebel. It had the V-8 inside the cabin rear of the normal dash board. Hew drove it a long way and it was SUPER SKETCHY!!!
You are correct Dan, I'm currently working on my 1966 buick gs california special car built at the longbeach gm plant in Southern California, it to is a going to be a gasser however I have no intention on raising the front end as we now have radial tires it's not needed or like you said 10" wide back bisply tires( forgive my misspelling) in fact I put lightend drop spindles on the front to keep the car somewhat level hight, however it is gasser in all other aspects. At first I was upset you destroyed that sedan delivery, to make somadd but as I see it transform it looks great to me.
Great job, and ignore the haters.
Good vid. I was right at the end when I noticed we were wearing the same T-shirt. Big shout out to Scott over at Cold War Motors! BTW, it’s a gasser, ignore the haters buddy!
No Matter what you do a Key Board Warrior always thinks they know more than you. Bet they Drive a Prius and don't even own a Hot Rod !!
Excellent breakdown Dan.😎👍
Love your explanation!
Great video, answered a few questions I had.
Holley/Hilborn makes a stacked EFI manifold that would probably work with your computer. It's only money.
Excellent video Dan , The Gasser stuff can be confusing.
Do what you like, that's the right thing to do.
I don't care what you call them. You build cool shit and not only that you actually drive em rain, hail or shine. And the speed you turn out these sweet rides is amazing. I wish I had 1/10th of your motivation. The posers are the one making comments who, if they actually build a car, they spend years if not decades to complete. Keep the builds coming, love your work.
Speaking of looks over function, we haven't seen your hair caught in a creeper wheel in a long time. 😁
My friend Mike H. restored and owns the '55 Chevy gasser raced in the 1960's-1970's called "Ivan The Terrible". Built and raced originally by Ivan Hamblin, it ran a stock front suspension with a nose high attitude. In it's current restored state it has a straight axle , but I defy anyone to say that it wasn't a real "gasser" back in the day!
Great shows keep up the good work be safe my friend
Love the nose high look, D&D's style , screw the slip through the air look. Brute force for speed was the way it was in my day!!!....
The reason why I built my Rambler was to make it look like a Gasser. I wanted the nose so high that you couldn't see the road in front of you! Common sense has brought it down somewhat but I can change the oil without jackstands!😆
Thanks Dan 😁
Dan! On market place 55 Chevy trim and chrome interior/exterior parts $400.00US His name is Daniel Redd. May want to check it out.
Always loved that 2 lane blacktop car.
Love this type of video Dan. You shoot from the hip and if it hits your bubble so be it Thanks for busting that stupid bubble to as what a gasser has to be.
He's 100 percent correct on the gasser thing
I think the comments are a great reminder of why you named your gasser what you did. They're all so mad. The people that freak out about you calling it a gasser are the same people that hate faux patina. Thank you for keeping true hot rodding alive!
Put pink interior in that hotrod and I will see you on powertour!! Convince Peg to come with you and I will buy the beer 👍.
You go Dan! anyway, I'm just here for the super fun builds!
It can be what you want it to be, and you can call it what you want! Probably most of the people leaving comments are like me , I like watching your struggles so I don’t have to. I get to sit in my easy chair with a cold snack, and watch you work😂 Oh and by the way where is the roof rack?
I remember going to New England Dragway back in the seventies and a lot of cars were jacked up high in the back.
Call it a Flamingo. Does that mean Dani's gonna paint it pink, hey? LOL!! Keep up the great work. Can't wait for the parts to be installed. Cheers!! 🤓
Perfect attitude and comments
High nose isn't my jam but it's not my car! So do what you want to do!!
Good Video Dan
With better tires and track preparation the NHRA "Gas" class cars abandoned straight axles in the 70s and went to A-arms or strut front ends.
You should check out the rules for the group I’m with Southeast Gassers Association!! Love the videos bro, keep up the great job!!
I grew up in the 60’s and tri 5 chevys were plentiful and a lot of people would remove the front bumper to look cool,if they did go to the drag strip they would have to run in the gas class because of no bumper
Dan a doer and Gets more Done than almost any body he is ALLWAYS cranking out content and car so stop with the less talk stuff
This was good Dan, made me go spin up this tune!
Classical Gas by Mason Williams.
Nothing wrong with having your own style Dan. I say giver do what you like, it can always be changed. Screw the dreamers and all their " If this was my car" bullshit.
I agree that a car does not have to have a straight axle to be a gasser. I think your car is dead on for a gasser style car and I like what you are doing with it.
I have the opposite problem, I have a 68 Chevy van with a 454, and those are stock with leaf springs and a beam axle up front. People see it and think I'm building a gasser van.... no, not really.
