The body style of this version of the GLE exudes simplicity and understated elegance and luxury. A design that will hardly go out of style. The X5 is nice, but in comparison with the GLE, its body has more lines and creases thus making it too busy.
The 400d seems to me to be the pick of the range. Certainly in Australia, it comes standard with AMG body kit and 21” wheels. $140k here in Oz. Not too bad by out high tax system where the government applies a “luxury car tax” on vehicles over $65,000. It’s called “class envy tax” here.
I looked at these and the X5. I went with the X5. I feel the GLE's are old man cars. They look good but the X5 is just sexier and more aggressive looking. I thought it performed WAY better as well.
Nice SUV, great technology, awesome interior but we in CANADA will never get another diesel here and that’s a deal breaker for me at least. Two engine choices: 2.0L turbo four and an in-line turbo six. The first one is underpowered for such a heavy SUV and no good for towing duties and the second one, although powerful and fun, doesn’t offer the pulling torque and frugality of previous Bluetek diesels of the past. Of course rich soccer moms won’t care and buy those in huge numbers non the less.
I wish they'd just come up with some clear graphics for the revs/speed because if they're not even shaping the screen like analogue and it's just a flat screen then why put fake dials on it? They just look tacky and cheap. It'd be a much more luxurious look to have something more creative or simple.
the e-active body control is so extra. first of all is this a muscle car back in the 90s popping up and down, second, less than 0.1% of people buy this to go offroad, third this option will be so expensive that very few dealers/customers will spec it on their car. Not saying that is absolutely useless but its just glorified gimmick/marketing material.
X5 knocks it into a cocked hat....diesel engined versions in particular. Used to drive Mercs but gave up with the poor quality interiors, which are tacky and very American, and the lightweight finish all round. I note you worry about its ride quality and yet every X5 review raves about that exact point.
No, it isn't, because from a pure technologically standpoint the "Velar" is just a piece of shit, compared with this high-tech Mercedes-Benz GLE! Forget about style, because this ist just subjectively. And in the interior, in my opinion the GLE looks much better than the Range Rover and is lightyears above a Velar in terms of ingenuity of the infotainment system! A Velar is almost outdated compared to the GLE.
Sorry Americans... the GLE has been proven to be one of the worst Mercedes for reliability and quality issues. I understand the reasons they are made in the USA, but it has proven costly for Mercedes in warranty repair and reputation.
so instead of a proper built-in screen, let's attach an elongated tablet on the dash...that looks ugly and almost like an afterthought ... why not do the same setup as the S class or E class etc... Mercedes Benz needs to maintain certain uniformity across its lines as a brand identity features that you can find on any mercedes, similar to what bmw, audi, and others do...

It's my father's favourite car, he's nudging me about GLE400. What I want though is Volvo XC90. I'm just not a fan of any German cars.
