      And it is very convenient to put all the blame for this on this single family and not where the problem truly lies, society.
      This is not the first school mass murder in the US and will not be the last.
      Statistics show that the next gun related incident in a school will be within a few days, and the next one with multiple deaths within two weeks.
      In my country children learn how to color, count, and play in school. In the US they are taught how to flee for shooters.
      In my country youth fear how to 'survive' the exam weeks. In the US they fear how to survive high school.
      Any action by students for safer schools and a safer life, is immediately attacked by organizations, and if they cannot win from the group, they rip apart every individual person that supports this.

The mother wouldn't answer the phone. I just kept calling each day until finally she answered. I explained who I was and what her daughter was doing, and when I finished, she said (I will never forget it, word for word), "Me and my husband have removed ourselves from her problems." The girl was 14 years old! These parents are why she HAD problems. (Administrators wanted us to continuously call home, but most of the time we got reactions like this. We logged whatever we could in the computer just in case anything ever happened, the school could say they tried, and maybe a court someday would hold the parents accountable. But probably not.)

I worry what he may become if he's raised in an adult prison. He seems to have NEVER had a chance because of his parents.
      I hope someday Ethan can participate in therapy, maybe even a youth group therapy. I think he could benefit from meeting other bullied kids and learn new coping techniques. ...So much was neglected by his parents, yet they gave him a handgun. He actually asked for help with thoughts he couldn't control. THAT'S a huge sign of someone who can be helped!! The way that's most likely deduced is through the students directly naming the shooter. (That's not at all a criticism if they did.)

      What's even more disturbing is the fact that this happened on school property and therefore the school was responsible for the lives of all those children who got killed. Yet in spite of that and knowing how potentially deadly this kid was because they SAW his violent drawings and read his violent writings and even saw the part where he wrote that he couldn't control his homicidal thoughts and wrote "help me".... in SPITE of all of that the SCHOOL allowed this kid back in the classroom that day when, as "mandated reporters", they could EASILY have called child protective services,the police, had him psychologically evaluated and so forth. They did NONE of those things. And now this brand new prosecutor who's trying to make a name for herself is doing this incredible snow job of trying to prosecute the parents, which is never done in these cases, to distract from the fact that the school is arguably more liable for the deaths of those kids than the parents even, for the aforementioned reasons. I'm not excusing the parents. How could anybody do that? But I hope everybody realizes what's going on here. The prosecutor doesn't want to make enemies with the local school officials so early in her career, so she's completely silent on their role in all this, while focusing solely on the parents. It's a much softer and safer target for her. Even the superintendent of schools in his speech right after the shooting said that they had no idea that this child was violent. That's obviously a bald-faced lie because the meeting with the parents that day was precisely because the teacher had seen his violent drawings and writings. Everybody's trying to protect their jobs, the superintendent of schools, the prosecutor etc. They know how badly the school could get sued. So they're just focusing on the parents. That's a crime in and of itself. The school is ultimately liable because they did NOT search that kids backpack and they let him go back to class. And children died. Yes the parents are idiots. But it didn't happen at their home, it happened at the school. They're legally as well as morally liable because they KNEW, they had all the evidence in front of them that day...and they failed to act. Period.

Federal law is crystal clear--an adult who sells or gifts a handgun to anyone under age 18 commits a crime, and the sentence is increased if they did it with knowledge that the minor had any intent to commit a crime. If you commit a crime that abets murder, then you are guilty of involuntary manslaughter per Michigan case law. The MI state law that allows a minor to "possess" a handgun for target practice or other legal activity under supervision of an adult doesn't mean they could gift the gun to the shooter; it only means that the minor could be in possession of the gun during a permitted activity. That is clear because MI law states with respect to pistols (the state uses that term rather than handgun) that “Purchaser” means a person who receives a pistol from another person by purchase or gift, and “Seller” means a person who sells or gives a pistol to another person. Sellers of handguns are not allowed to provide them to minors. There is no exemption for parents to gift handguns to minors as that would be in violation of federal law.

      I actually blame the parents more than the kid. He's a child, with obvious mental problems, and they KNEW it. Yet they never did anything to get him psychiatric treatment. Yes what the kid did was evil, but the parents were the ADULTS and are 100 percent responsible for him. They had to have known he had problems. Mental problems that severe don't happen overnight. There are always signs. Besides, who the hell gives a 15 year old kid a handgun?!

      Most of the problem with that is the fact that most shooters are adults who bought their guns legally. You cannot hold a parent liable for the actions of an adult child. However, you could probably try, and the effort of trying to tie these liabilites on to others will definitely impact how people who know a disturbed person take serious these issues and start to act on behalf of themselves, if not the community (that they don't care about).

    During the Prosecutor's clip, I asked why was the kid's backpack not searched during the parents and kid meeting at the school meeting. I then remembered it would be an illegal search without a warrant. However, if the parents were fearful or really concerned of what was said to them in that meet, THEY as parents should have searched the backpack and the tragedy would had been avoided.

      @danepatterson8107 Před 2 lety +16

      You're right: the state cannot search without probable cause or consent to search. We can be sure that even if the school had asked to search the pack, the parents would have refused. Whether probable cause existed at that point is another debate, but the police were never brought in on these threats. Any cop would have asked the parents and/or the kid: where is that gun now/do you have any weapons with you now?
