MARILLION RELEASE 9 CLASSIC MARILLION TRACKS RE-IMAGINED
WITH FRIENDS FROM THE ORCHESTRA.
Earlier this year, Marillion entered the studio with the intention to record selected songs from their rich catalogue along with friends from the orchestra.
Recorded at The Racket Club and Peter Gabriel‘s Real World Studios, and with a running time of almost 80 minutes, 'With Friends From The Orchestra' features nine classic Marillion tracks re-imagined and accompanied by the In Praise Of Folly String Quartet with Sam Morris (French Horn) and Emma Halnan (Flute).
Marillion explain:
“So our brilliant producer and collaborator Michael Hunter wrote some new string arrangements and we took a week out to go to Real World Studios and record with our friends.
The result has exceeded our expectations, is indeed a thing of beauty.
We hope you enjoy the songs and agree with us that some of them are actually better than the originals(!). Whether or not you agree with that bold statement we’re sure this work will move you.”
'Estonia', originally from 1997’s album 'This Strange Engine' and the first song to be revealed from the album, gives a first insight into the hauntingly beautiful and touching versions of some of the band’s most beloved songs.

Saw this live in Gateshead this week... Very wonderful.
I was there. A beautiful song. Best band in the world. Great musicians with great fans at a wonderful venue. So underrated is prog rock.
Marillion keep getting better and the orchestra were amazing adding to the already wonderful selection of songs.

Great instrumental backing, but good god what's happened to h's voice recently? Sounds like he's snarling or something?
very emotional song...probably crying. he went through a tough stage with his voice but it seems to be back if you ask me.
Overwhelmingly from the fans attending the current tour concerts, the first point they make in their reviews is that "h's voice is better than ever". When h's voice has completely failed to inspire me, it is usually because he's using a high, weak, breathy tone just shy of reaching his falsetto. Perhaps he intends to project vulnerability or sadness when utilizing that voice, but it nonetheless is uninteresting and devoid of passion.
I think it is clear his range at the high end has diminished, but at the same time, at the low end, it has expanded. Some of the songs have been altered to accomodate this change, which I am advised is fairly normal for a singer as they age. Personally, I find the change to be a good one, although it does take awhile to adjust my mind to any changes in how a particular song is being performed.
This was my first listen of this version, and I agree it added some scratchiness to the vocal that isn't present in other performances. But I'm not at all sure if that diminishes the impact of this tremendous paean to the healing powers of love and hope.
I think his vocals are superb here. H often takes some liberties vocally both with live performances and modified versions. I think it works well with this version.
@@positivelastaction3957 I agree about everything to do with his lower-pitched voice these days sounding richer and more emotive, but it's moments like 1:31 when he says 'fantastic' that just sound unpleasant to me?

Fish has a powerful and personal voice. H can be a good singer but you can't tell the difference between him and a hundred others.

Sounds boring and as if the band is just satisfied with their basic formula for writing a song. Nothing is interesting and vocals have a monotone sound to them.
That's not a good Marillion song. Nothing that reminds the old albums since H. entered. The last one, F.E.A.R. is just bad. It's a Pitty.
