In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, we're listening to music by Marillion for the 2nd time on the channel. Estonia is from their 1997 album This Strange Engine, but today we're listening to their remake of the song that is included on their 2019 album With Friends from the Orchestra. The song's subject is heartbreaking, but the music is astoundingly beautiful. I hope you'll come along for the ride!

"Music suspends time to help us emotionally" Well said Doug. Music also has a way of bringing us together regardless of differences. Except when it comes to Fish vs Hogarth apparently.
Fish!
People always want to make it a competition: why not Fish AND Hogarth? Fish-era was probably more consistently great, but Hogarth-era has had plenty of highlights, including my favorite Marillion album in Brave.
Been a fan since their debut. I love Fish, but I think H is better. They're both great in different ways!
@@jonathanhenderson9422 I totally agree. Brave is a masterpiece!
Hogarth hands down has lifted Marillion beyond what fish could ever have done
My friend you have just scratched the surface of what is Marillion.
Possibly one of the most underrated bands of all time, and certainly one of the greatest live acts ever experienced.
I totally agree with you.
Don’t forget the Fish days. I look at Marillion as, ‘Side on and Side two’. That’s the original thought of calling the Misplaced Childhood album.
Marillion is a no less than a top 15 band/artist in rock history....well said Sir.
Marillion are amazing- and no one can tell me that Steve Hogarth isn't one of the finest singers ever in rock. A simply beautiful voice
I lost my wife to brain cancer...just 5 years ago. Marillion was one of her...and one of OUR favorite bands.
This song makes me cry every time...and yet I can feel her close...if only for a few minutes.
Thank you for doing this, Doug.
Five years is no time. I’m really sorry. I’m glad you can take pleasure from this amazing song. I do too.
@@hanreality.7266 - Thank you.
I'm so sorry. I'm thankful that we have music like this to tie us together.
@@jasonhalogen - Thank you...me, too.
I am so sorry for you! I am crying right now!
In a just world, Hogarth would be correctly recognized as one the greatest front men and songwriters in rock history.
Indeed. But H and Marillion never "sold out". Which is why they are not as mega as they should be, but why their loyal fans think the world of them.
@@adriangoodrich4306 Yes we do
Amen! H brings a depth and soulfulness to his performances that makes other perfectly good singers sound dull by comparison.
@@adriangoodrich4306 In my world he is!
@@adriangoodrich4306 never sold out?what does that mean ? you mean they never tried to become music for the masses?have you ever heard holidays in eden lol
Doug, Marillion's manager was asked about this video and she said Steve Hogarth saw it and has been sharing it on WhatsApp to other people. Excellent reaction as always, congratulations!
There’s the Marillion with Fish; Clutching at Straws, is a great album. And there’s Marillion after Fish left.
More great albums to choose from. Afraid of sunlight, is one of my favorites.
Clutching at Straws never gets old for me. Love that album. It's especially good listening while driving a car alone at night on a quiet, dark highway.
One of the best pieces of music I’ve ever heard in my 66 years..simply love it very much..
I've been a fan of Marillion for 40 years and have never been disappointed with anything they produce. The with the Orchestra album was great and even better when I got to see it live .
"This Strange Engine": One of my favorite rainy day albums!
You are starting to understand why Marillion’s music connects so emotionally for many fans. As others have suggested. Try The Great Escape, The Space ( live at Royal Albert Hall with the same friends from the orchestra) or Neverland.
Fantastic version, great suggestion
I would concur the recommendation to listen to the RAH concert
Neverland, absolutely.
The Great Escape is a masterpiece from Marillion.
Yes it is! After Fish left then band I had trouble accepting the new singer, but when I finally got the Brave album I realized Marillion was a different band, just as good as it was before.
Totally agree.
"Don't ask me why I'm doing this, You wouldn't understand, You're asking the wrong questions, You couldn't understand, A bridge is not a high place,
The fifty-second floor, Icarus would know a mountain isn't far to fall when you've fallen, When you've fallen from the moon..."
Best ever lyrics!!
I'm Estonian and I'm amazed I didn't know this song existed until saw it on your channel. Thank you for it.
Urmas Alender, a beloved musician in Estonia, also sank that day. Some survivors have said that he clung on a chimney and was singing before sinking with the ship. He also had songs about how sea would take his life.
My wife loved this song, when she passed away suddenly, at only 31yrs of age, i couldn't think of anything more appropriate to play for her at her service. Whenever i hear this song, it makes me think of her, an i smile at her memory.
So sorry for such a devastating loss. The song always brings me to tears, remember when the news mentioned the Estonia had sunk with so many trapped inside or drowned in the ice cold water. Heart breaking 💔 😢
So sorry for your loss, stay strong.
The Brave album is dark but beautiful journey..
Agreed. I suggested it awhile back, a couple times IIRC, but Doug didn't seem interested. It's probably too long for one reaction video. Plus it starts out slow and he might lose interest (?).
No band on the planet puts as much feeling and emotion into their music as Marillion - Estonia is one of the best songs ever written imo! Great comments and contributions Doug , top man!
That's a beautiful piece of music about something tragic. New song for me, so thank you.
If you enjoyed that check out Marillion with the same strings playing the Albert Hall...a feast for the senses. The dvd is called All One Tonight.
One of the most underated bands about, wonderful reaction Doug try "The Space" live at the Royal Albert Hall next Marillion at their best.
I was going to make the same recommendation ✌️
What a band
Best, in the world 😊
The whole album is magical.
Hope for the future is anything but magical.
Neverland (Live 2009) - Marillion
Fantastic. So glad to finally see a reaction to one of Marillion's best songs. I saw them on this tour, and H told the story of how he met Mr. Barney and how the song came about. His sympathy for the victims was so genuine, and we could tell that Steve had been deeply affected by the tragedy. His lyrics are so perfect. This version is great in a different way, with the classical instruments, but the studio version is also fantastic with the Russian balalaika in the choruses and Mark Kelly playing the instrumental part of the bridge section with a perfect synth patch. Great, great song.
Suggestion: Marillion , Clutching at straws the whole album
Try "The Great Escape" next for Marillion´s masterpiece!!
Brave - the entire album was a masterpiece.
all Marillion songs will be your favourite
An absolute masterpiece!
Marillion's songs are simply way above what anyone else in the rock/pop music genre is writing and recording and Estonia particularly, among others, is the proof.
Please react to 'The Space' live at The Royal Albert Hall, and it's one of The first appearances of FFTO , The Performance, Sound ...Wow!!! Plus .. lyrically will blow you away , and the track was last track on 'Season's End' debut of the Amazing Hogarth. Back in the 90s .
Marillion is a secret treasure, both Fish and H eras. I really love your style, Doug. You really transmit the love for music that we share. Thanks.
Brilliant reaction to a simply brilliant song Doug, Marillion are simply genius and Hogarth one of the great songwriters and singers. Emotional.
Great reaction Doug, with the very said friends, The Space live at The Royal Albert Hall is incredible. I am off to see Marillion in 11 days 🤘
Hey Doug, i would suggest you Ocean Clouds, it’s their masterpiece in ma opinion. Hope to hear it soon on your channel. Anyway great job as always…
I second this. Ocean Cloud is insanely good. One of the best epics of the last twenty years.
"He's seen too much of life.............."
Yes yes yes! Ocean Cloud is probably their best long track, and the lyrics are superb.
I agree with you.
The whole Marbles album is a masterpiece
Their concept album Brave is still among my musical "reference fews". It could be a possible album for your long reactions.
Totally agree but loud with the lights off.
Thank god for (this) the music
YES! Finally someone covers this!
I have recommended this in several creators' comments - maybe even yours. You're the first person I've seen to actually cover it. For those who haven't... "their loss". They're missing out on brilliance. It's a bonus that you're one of the rare people on YT who actually understands and can talk about/break down the music.
Marillion is half-jokingly referred to as "The best band you've never heard of". For years that's been pretty much true. It seems like that might be changing these days, as more people are introduced to their music, which is wonderful. Marillion deserves so much more recognition.
This is gorgeous and, as you say, "heart breaking" song. It's far and away my favorite recorded performance of it. It's one of those songs I wish everyone could hear and appreciate as you do.
Steve Hogarth has one of the most emotive voices I've personally heard in progressive music. I doubt he's ever phoned in a performance in his life.
Also, the smile that keeps returning to the face of the violinist on the far left (their right), in front of Steve Hogarth, is infectious.
You have put into words thoughts that I have too about this amazing band of fantastic musicians ..thanks for sharing your thoughts..
I came to Marillion only about 5 years ago and their music is wonderful. So many of their songs you should give your educated treatment to! The first thing I heard was "Neverland" I would recommend This song. Many thanks I love what you do, and how you do it. Keep on Keeping on,as They say!
This is a great album, This Strange Engine. The opening track is great, Man of a Thousand Faces. Simple and powerful, with an epic closure .
I agree. That school choir was a perfect idea for that song.
Great reaction w one of so many songs of Marillion. They are a journey. Ocean Cloud should be your next one, tru story ! Thank you very much.
A masterpiece by my most favourite band of all time. Steve H and the band move you to another emotional level. Genius!
This Strange Engine is an astounding album
I went to a sound check in Manchester where Steve Rothery had said he’d sign my guitar. It was one of his acoustic Farida guitars. Steve Hogarth came up and said ‘who are you?’. He spent 20 minutes talking with me. What a band, so talented and humble
Great band period. Long history of great music.
Doug, you should listen to some Fish era Marillion. Maybe Script For a Jester's Tear for the album of the same name, The Bitter Suite from Misplaced Childhood, Fugazi and from the album of the same name or the opening trilogy from Clutching at Straws.
Never heard this before. This is why I listen.
I've meant to check this band out for years. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to check them out.
I want to the Marillion fan convention weekend event in The Netherlands in 2017, 2 weeks after my father died. They played this on the first night and I was a blubbering mess from about 30 seconds in.
All the feels, all of the time.
Doug, that was your best episode yet! Yes, Marillion is a remarkable band--IMHO the most underrated progressive rock band of them all. Check out the DVDs of their various Marillion Weekends and you will see how much their fans adore them. Given your classical background, I'm not surprised you appreciated their With Friends From the Orchestra, but there is also a live version called With Friends at St. David's. I think you would really enjoy that.
Again we have few ignorants and Fish pilgrims. Let it go. Both era are good and strong. Get use to it!
Love Marillion
so much going on in this song. and besides the lyrics so emotionally conveyed theres a driving 2/4 over 3/4 energy which really is the driving force behind the hopefullness. what a gem❤
Probably my favourite Marillion song... along with Neverland ..(favourite from the Hogarth-era)
Neverland is epic.
Beautiful Lyrics "No one leaves you
When you live in their heart and mind
And no one dies
They just move to the other side
When we're gone
Watch the world simply carry on
We live on laughing and in no pain
We'll stay and be happy
With those who have loved us today
If you need the best beautiful lyrics then listen to Leonard Cohen " Dress Rehearsal Rag" It's in a different league.
Estonia is a great song written when they were already experienced musicians. It would be interesting to see an episode on Grendel, an amazing 17 minute epic they wrote when they were in their early twenties.
Grendel is a must.
@@nornog At least some of he band members hate that song and use it as a punchline. I'd rather see Doug react to more recent epics like "Ocean Cloud", "This Strange Engine", "Gaza" or "The Invisible Man" where they perfected their own style of epic songwriting. They are way past imitating Gabriel period Genesis at this point in their career.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo 😆
Wasn't grendel one of their first pieces and fish's "audition peice", as his audition was to write lyrics to this instrumental they had.
Great analysis of a well loved song and band Doug❤️
Loved watching this-thank you! For me there's no Fish v Hogarth-the emotion and love leaps out through all eras.
The whole album Seasons End is phenomenal.
With Fish, there was some more aggression, rebelliousness and attitude in the songs but now, with Hogarth, they are more delicate, subtle and heartbreaking. Both versions of the band are amazing, and we are all blessed to enjoy the music they have presented us.
Could not have put it better. Fed up with the "Fish was far better than H" brigade. Enjoy it all!
@@adriangoodrich4306 Exactly, people need to learn to move on.
@Andrade....exactly!!! I've been on the Marillion Appreciation Train from their inception. Losing Fish was a shock...but after listening to the growing list of masterpieces by post Fish Marillion, I'm sold on Steve H. I feel so much intense emotion from Marillion with Hogarth. Personally...although I love both versions, the present line-up is my favorite version of Marillion. 👍👋
@@richardgolub5297 I like both versions, but it depends on how i am feeling in a particular day.
Interestingly enough, Marillion released the first cut of their new album this week.
And it sounds amazing
My first time hearing this. Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you, Doug! 💙
I'm glad to see someone so enthused by Marillion. Death and water are recurring themes in Steve Hogarth's writing. I would like to add my voice to those suggesting Ocean Cloud as the best of the band's longer songs. The Great Escape is a bit like the best bits of Marillion crammed into a relatively short piece. It gives a good picture of what the band is about.
I second that
@@jamesderekeikeland9048 3rd. I do believe Ocean Cloud is a must
‘Lost at Sea’ off the ‘How We Live’ album is a pretty special song too 👍
Totally agree 👍👍
Thanks a lot for this great song (i'm a fan of Marillion) and your emotion.
Big great thanks...
Quite unique Marillion is an extraordinary band and a blessing to all who loves their beautiful music !
Sublime
such a fine band. I am seeing them again later this month.
Jon Lord’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra should be on the schedule
Because with that piece al those orchestra and band concerts started.
1969 performed at Royal Albert hall London first time by DeepPurple
1999 performance after lost scores rewritten also by DeepPurple
2012 recorded in studio just before the passing of mr Jon Lord.
I am sure you will have a stunning time.
Being Swedish, it's hard to ever forget the Estonia disaster. Out of 850 deaths, more than 500 were Swedish citizens, making it comparable in size (number of dead swedes, that is) to the tsunami of 2004. No other accident in European waters have been deadlier during peacetime, and this happened not so far from the Nordic capitals of Stockholm and Helsinki and Estonian capital Tallinn where she sailed from. There have since been many conspiracies and new investigations since it's still not completely sorted out what the actual reason was for the ship to sink. I'm pretty sure one investigation is still ongoing as of today since it's been on the news a couple of times this year.
Come to think of it, I may actually have had a Marillion t-shirt on the very day she sunk back in 1994, as I used to listen to them quite a lot back then. They were pretty big here in the early 90's.
A masterpiece and the reason I love Marillion, wish they still wrote songs like this 🥺
They do mate check Fear....New kings best song
@@arthurmol6875 I’ve listened to it many times and it just doesn’t do it for me. Been a fan for almost 40 years and now liked a whole album since Marbles. Still pre order everything though.
Listen to there new album an hour before it's dark
@@albell4522 I have many times best thing they’ve done since marbles
I think I saw a slight smile on the young lass playing the violin, she (and all others too) must have been enjoying playing all these songs together in this setting like this.
I have been a fan of Marillion for a long time, this is my alltime favorite, though there are many good pieces in their entire ouvre.
Thanks for posting this, Doug! I really appreciate your insight into this piece.
Nice reaction 👍🏻👍🏻
I suggest 'Ocean Cloud' and 'Gaza' (live).
Two great and both long songs with awesome music and lyrics...

I told you you would like them if you liked The New Kings. They just released the first track from their upcoming album to those of us who pre-ordered it. It's a great cult to be part of :)
So far I like it though I need to play it many more times. Sounds like an extension on FEAR sonically.
@@johnnicholson8345 ...Which wouldn't be too bad. FEAR is their best album in decades, IMHO.
@@mortenbay I'm a huge fan of sounds that can't be made. Fear is a mood album. Needs a certain head space. White paper is my favorite on it.
Great track Doug! Please let’s have some more Marillion - Clutching at Straws good place to start 😉🇬🇧
Warm, Wet, Circles: that'll get him going.....
I have been lucky enough to know the two Stevens from Marillion what utterly lovely people they are, zero ego and this song never fails to give me goosebumps and thanked them and the band for their contribution to my life. Such an emotive song and the Marillion back catalogue is really something to behold.
Great reaction video and I love playing along with this song on the drums 👌
Love me some marillion now and then. Fantastic band. Spiritual
I see now now 136k subscribers. Wow. And from a standing start, earlier this year. But great videos like this show just why that is. And why Doug so well deserves every one of them.
Never heard this before until now. What an amazingly emotive and beautiful song Thank you Doug for bringing it to my attention. Straight on my playlist. Love it 👍👍🏴🏴
Doug words after the song….very emotional and stunning….❤️
I have listened to this video at least the 6th or 7th time in particular and there is always at least one big tear in my eye
Ive loved Marillion since I first heard them in 1980. I cry like a kid to most of their music as it’s so beautiful. Fish was brilll but H is another level. Keep going with Marillion, they will never cease to surprise you.
I LOVESD your remarks on this song, Marillion is a remarkable band, their music is supremely challenging ...the song Brave especially, or The Great Escape.
Marillion are my favorite bands ever and they have the ability to lift you out of any of life's funks that you might be in. I will be forever grateful for that
Doug, the story of the sinking and the British survivor’s experience is unbelievable. Really worth some research if your into that sort of thing……then the song will really blow you away !!!!
Damn you are productive.
All best wishes from Germany.
Whole lotta love.
Loved your Symphony X reaction to 'The Odyssey' ( big fan yo)
yours...Andreas
This song was played in Steve Hogarth´s dad funeral. He loved this song. Steve has an enormous amount of deep and emotional lyrics and he is also a breathtaking singer. My thoughts to my own father who left us 5 years ago today, but he lives in our hearts and minds forever. Hello from Argentina!
Thanks Doug for Marillion. You gotta do Forgotten Sons by Marillion with Fish as lead lung. It will tear your heart apart. I couldn't listen to it while my son was doing his military.
Yet another Marillion masterpiece.
For obvious reasons, this song is an oft quoted one when anyone passes. As beautiful as this song is, the title track of the album is a master-piece, in the truest sense of that word - a defining work of art and also an astonishing lyric with an almost more astonishing back story. :)
Marillion have made A LOT of stunning and profound music and are just about to release even more next year. I have heard over 30,000 albums covering all the so called ‘greats’ and I reckon they have made made more exceptional songs than virtually anyone. I don't like everything they have done but at their best they are right up there with the greatest ever songwriters! A secret that is still hidden to a lot of people who appreciate wonderful music. You are doing a great job to change that so you have a new subscriber here. Thanks
marilion are the best band ever !!. Absolute artists awesome!!.
Watching your wet eyes as you talk about your grandmother...dude...I'M NOT CRYING, YOU'RE CRYING! I feel you, sir. Lost mine a few years ago. I know the original version of this song, first time for this version. It feels fast, but Hogarth (singer) KILLS IT. I'm more a fan of the first singer Fish, but Hogarth is a beast on this one. Very powerful lyrics, beautiful song. I enjoy your reactions. You offer a new vision and better analysis than most. Well done. If I may suggest...The first three tracks of Marillion's Clutching at Straws are a GLORIOUS trio. They very much flow together in terms of pacing and story. Literally the best opening 3 songs I can think of on any album. Hotel Hobbies, Warm Wet Circles and That Time of the Night. If you've got 14 minutes, check them out together.
Such an emotional song! Loved it Doug!
May I add 'Out of this world' by Marillion from the album, 'Afraid of Sunlight'
This tells the story of Donald Campbell, a Briton who broke his own water speed record repeatedly. In 1967 Donald lost control of his boat, the Bluebird K7, and both the boat and the man were lost to Coniston water, in the English Lake District
This is a stunning song but live is totally breathtaking.
I think that Marillion are a band of two eras. It would be great to listen to some of their stuff with Fish. Check out the track Grendel on B'Sides themselves an awesome track. The two eras each have things to recommend them but the Fish era is definitely worth exploration
This song so beautiful and sad together makes me cry sometimes
Absolutely magnificent piece of music
The sound of Rothery's guitar in Estonia really sounds like waves or under water.
I can tell you really liked this one Doug. Great philosophical discussion Doug. Love the strings and vocals were great. Beautiful song. Kudos to who requested this one.
Great music, you just don't listen to, it's something you experience. It elicits an emotional response.
Makes me want to cry. Alos love Easter and Seasons end.. Beautiful and poignant voice and instumentals... What a band
Doug, Fish era Marillion please. You won't be disappointed. Here are a few ideas. Script For A Jester Tear, The Web, Incubus, Slàinte Mhath and the entire Misplaced Childhood for an extend play lounge.
One of my favourite tracks from an unbelievable band . Seen them 6 times now . The best band in the world in my opinion. They have made so much amazing music and just seem to get better and better. Loved your review
