Dawkins in the Classroom: London Students Debate God, Darwin & the Origin Of Life

  • I led a classroom of London high schoolers for a Channel 4 documentary, on the subject of Charles Darwin and evolution. It inspired questions from curious young minds that I then engaged with - about the nature of religious belief, about time and space, and about the truth of the origin of life.

In fact you chose to believe in it since there are no proofs at all so whether you have been brought up by believing in it or not it is irrelevant.....still if you listen you your teacher here you will see that you are contraddicting yourself: if you were brought up in india one would be hindu whereas if born in the middle east one would be either jew or muslim. That is so stupid that your teacher does not know what he is talking about. Believing in something is a choice acquired after studying / research etc etc I was brought up by atheists, left school very early simply becuase i could not listen to all this bloody british non-sense. Those who brought me up tried everything to turn me into an atheist but did not work out so, again, it is a choice to believe in something whether you are proofs or you have none just like Richard here.......start thinking.

You are joking, he's brainwashing the poor kids with his garbage! He even admits evolution is only a theory! Child asks, why is evolution still only a 'theory'? Dawkins replies "don't worry about that" haha what a joker. He even debunks it himself, when he tells the kid 'we used to have a theory the Earth was round, but now we've been in space we know it round, so we call it a fact now! Dawkins follows that scientific pearl by telling the child "don't worry about why we still call evolution a theory". His exact words... He's making it up as he goes along!
Listen how often Dawkins uses the word 'probably', Sorry Dawkins 'probably' ain't a very scientific word!
Oh and when you google Denisovans and that cute fake homind puppet appears, remember that all they have is one finger bone and a tooth! The puppet is total fantasy but it makes Dawkins go all gooey eyed. It's no different to pictures of angels in the Bible!

"3rd day seed/plant....5th day marine life--birds...6th day terrestrial mammals---humans". HOW is that distinct from "descent with modification"?!
FN REMARKABLE!! Genesis provides accounting for oxygen on earth allowing for subsequent animal life.
Genesis' offers ONLY a koan for first life: plant/seed
4th day prima facie enunciates; "days/seasons/years...for purposes of sacred observance". OF COURSE, removing all doubt "days" references epochs not 24 hour days.
Repeatedly the separation between 3rd & 5th days affirms a reverence for animal life not accorded plants.
---The first page of chapter 4 of The God Delusion has Dawkins claiming to repudiate physicist/atheist Fred Hoyle's contention
that 'life beginning on earth is as likely as a hurricane assembling a fully functioning Boeing 747'. Dawkins says, 'oh no, poor boy; he fails to appreciate the miracle of natural selection'. Dawkins' worshipful genuflection to natural selection is woefully
in opposition to Darwin's chapter 6: "numerous, successive, slight modification".
The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics NEVER/EVER/NEVER/EVER allows inanimate
objects to proceed through numerous, successive, slight modification. That IS
an absolute antonym of 2nd Law; THE MOST proven law known to humans.
Einstein said, '..is the one law of universal content which will NEVER be overthrown"
      IT HASN'T BEEN!

The value of educating children about the facts of evolution cannot be overstated. It's concerning to hear about the prevalence of religious indoctrination in schools, especially when it comes at the expense of teaching scientific facts like evolution. In my country, Romania, children are subjected to religious education from a very young age, with classes starting as early as first grade and continuing throughout their entire schooling. And I am talking about regular schools, not faith schools here! These classes often begin and end with prayers, creating an environment that prioritizes religious indoctrination.
In a typical school year, comprising approximately 35 weeks, students undergo one session of religious education per week, beginning in first grade and continuing for 12 years. This accumulates to a total of 420 hours dedicated to religious education. In contrast, the allocation for teaching evolution is notably limited, with only one session provided in the 2nd semester of the 8th grade and another at the end of the 12th grade (when, in both cases, most students are concerned with the admission to highschool/college) - adding to a total of 2 classes in 12 years.
I vividly remember my own experiences with this system. In second grade (when I was about 8 years old) , I dared to question the existence of God in my religious education class, only to be met with shock and admonishment from my teacher, who told me never to DARE say that again during her classes. Instead of fostering critical thinking, these classes often instill fear by teaching children about concepts like hell and divine punishment.
It's clear that there's a need for more emphasis on science-based education, particularly when it comes to topics like evolution. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn about the natural world without the imposition of religious dogma!
The educational system could benefit from more educators like Professor Dawkins.

The young mind is very malleable and very naive. Unfortunately, it doesn't have much defence against irrational arguments or beliefs being imposed upon it. If children were very difficult to teach they would be far less likely to survive, so the young mind *has* to be accepting of information coming in as fact. However, children don't have prior information upon which is filter out implausibility, so they have to accept it alongside what may actually be useful information.
The more irrationality that is introduced to the young mind the more gunked up that mind becomes. Eventually, usually around the teenage years, the mind becomes more likely to repel contradictory knowledge and more likely to refuse arguments from authorities. So, if the gunk hasn't been cleared out by that point it becomes *very* difficult to remedy. The more gunked up a mind is, the more irrational the mind becomes.
We see this with some of the students here, unable to get past the initial premise that the 'holy book' that was fed into them at a young age is not evidence is any rational way. The contradictory evidence that *is* rational gets repelled rather than processed. Thus, an irrational base is very difficult to erode with rational arguments because the 'software' for processing that rationality has either never been uploaded or has been overwritten with irrationality. I do not know the answer to this; I'm not sure there is actually is a 'good' way to remove irrationality once it becomes so established since the only truly 'good' way cannot be used.
What we need see is a ban on feeding irrational information to children, in the same way we ban alcohol and tobacco consumption with children. This means not taking children to religious organisations. Prosecuting adults who feed religion to a child. Once they are adults they would then hopefully have a good base of rationality to work from. At that point it becomes necessary to allow freedom of choice - because at that point choice is actually informed and therefore meaningful. It will likely not occur in any country with a sizeable religion population, so we'll just have to hope that strong consisten arguments are made in schools for rational arguments to counter well-meaning, but ultimately harmful, parents blasting religion at the child.

You were brainwashed as a child reading too many Tommy the T rex books, how much real investigation have you done into evolution since then?
Do it and then see what you find, because while you can obviously see that life does slowly change over time, that's the same species evolving, ie a human simply becoming a slightly different human, not a totally different creature.
As for lies... Dawkins talks about Denisovans looking so much like us, but did you know the only Denisovans remains they have is a single tooth and finger bone!
But Google Denisovans and you will see a full sized homind creature, it's a fiction, a lie, to sucker people and continue the brainwashing everyone's had since kindergarten!
Dawkins just posted a new video of himself attempting to brainwash kids the way we were all brainwashed as kids and when he invites them to ask questions, he evades most of their questions because they are unanswerable. Evolution is only a theory!

We sang methodist hymns every morning and we're mostly Christian background. However by the age of 9 or 10, I realised Santa was made up, as was God and jesus. Most of us felt the same. About life and why we are here, there are a thousand narratives to tell, and whether they are born of scientific fact, myth or legend, each may have its meaning. It is a brave and wise soul who comes forward and tries to sort them out as to their validity, but Richard Dawkins is one, and he commands the greatest respect as a foremost thinker of our time. I only wonder, though, that the narratives provided by religion, while they probably fall into the category of myth and legend, might too have their place in the human imagination. We each have to grapple with the unimaginable, and no matter what explanation we encounter, Darwinian or otherwise, the answers are still far beyond what we can humanly comprehend. Perhaps things connect more than he suggests. I also like how Professor Dawkins speaks of poetry, music and mathematics.
