      It’s interesting you bring that up because I was watching this with the commentary and Tarantino points out that in all Rodriguez’s movies he always has one character playing the dog. Where they are just there to be quiet and react to things other characters are doing. Richie is the dog in this scene and his reactions are like a dog who chewed up the carpet and now has to face their owners coming home.

    Few things I love about this scene is the subtleties to it. The bank teller isn't a young gorgeous woman that Richie just couldn't resist, no she was a middle aged, some what heavy mom that gave off nearly no sex appeal yet guaranteed from the moment they kidnapped her, Richie had this in mind. He was a different class of criminal then Seth, he was a monster that enjoyed causing pain and suffering. In the opening scene they never talk about it but I'd bet that when they were hiding in the isles, each with a younger 20 something hostage, Richie groped or molested her in some way. The second thing is Seth pulling out the burger just to realize the hostage is gone. It means while out getting food he thought enough of her to get her a burger as well. And yes part of his anger here is worry about how crazy his brother is becoming, but a good part of it is because he promised this woman that if she played ball shed make it through. He didn't want to kill this woman unless it was necessary. He has a code and rape isn't any where near it. Seth has compassion to a degree but would kill if you needed killing. Ritchie was a psycho that killed because he could.

Like Ted Bundy for instance had a preference for college age petite white brunettes with a part down the middle of their hair. It's all preference of course, but just like how you're attracted to certain qualities in an significant other, rapists are attracted to certain qualities in their victims. Doesn't mean they're not also oppurtunitists that attack an easy target. If bundy had a perfect oppurtunity to rape this women as conveniently as Richie did here would he? No doubt. Is it about power and control as well? Of course.

    The thing I love the most is the sheer disgust Seth sees in Richie's behavior. He doesn't care that it's his brother, he absolutely will not tolerate his habits. Granted, his reasons might be a bit more pragmatic than moral, but the fact that it does bother him is why I love Seth's character so much -- he has standards and principles, even as a criminal and he won't compromise them, not even for his own brother. That's some damn good writing right there.

    • @jimmy2k4o
      @jimmy2k4o Před 3 lety +12

      You say that but Seth Hugs Ritchie in this scene. Infact Seth does nothing to Ritchie for this apart from telling him not to do it. While he knows that Ritchie will, he even mentions it to Jacob later.
      Seth definitely has standards and ethics, but he loves Ritchie more. If he was there he would have saved the teller from Ritchie, but he wouldn’t punish Ritchie. I think Ritchie knows Seth wouldn’t allow it and that’s why he waits until Seth leaves, and behaves himself around Juliet Lewis because Seth is there watching him.
      If what you said was totally true Seth would just kill Ritchie
      For two reasons:
      1) being a sick fuck who deserves to die.
      2) endangering their escape into Mexico with his erratic behaviour.
      But I think we know Seth wouldn’t ever kill Ritchie, no matter how many times Ritchie does something sick.

    One of my favorite scenes in all of cinema, hands down! A straight to the throat, dark look, into the divided beings of those who are evil and those who have morals. George Clooney's character is in no way a good guy within this film, himself is a murderer, crooked and violently hot headed but, then happens this moment. This scene nearly turns your negative impressions of him and shows him as a good guy after all. From first instance of being so confused why his brother is the way he is, seeking for an explanation, you see him slowly reach that boiling point of realizing there is no understanding his brother and just basically grabs him by the horns to say "you're sick, you're wrong, and i'm not like you." IMO the entire scene in itself could spin off clear away from what the movie actually is about and have a potential story of just that subject matter alone, a brother stuck with a monster for a sibling but still, unfortunately his brother.

    This scene was the most disturbing and scary. 1:03 that's the best acting in the whole movie. Seth's reaction...trying to understand _why_ his brother would do such a thing. The way he so calmly and softly asks him, "Richard, what's wrong with you? What is the _matter with you?"_ Realizing what a monster he is, he blames himself first...it's heartbreaking. 1:43 You can see the reality hitting him right there. Glassy-eyed, some tears coming.
    And there was so much tension when Richie was eyeballing Kate later in the movie. I was scared for her. Those SHORT snips of the shots of the carnage in that room freaked me out. (I saw this movie when it came out at age 10... lol) But it was something in films that always terrified me more; aftermath. Seeing what happened, rather how it happened is a LOT scarier, which is why Se7en freaked me the fuck out, too.

    I understand that Tarantino's movies are connected but it honestly felt like the first and second half of this movie were 2 different movies. I would like to see the first half become it's own movie entirely. Also, they are referencing Pulp Fiction by placing Big Kahuna burger implying this movie and Pulp Fiction are in the same universe. That being said that means vampires exist in Pulp Fiction

    Tarantino often gets criticism for installing himself in his films because he isn’t a good actor but to Quentin’s credit he plays an absolutely terrifying psychopath.
    His impulsiveness and total disregard for human life make him more terrifying than the likes of Gordon Gecko, John Doe in Seven, Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler and maybe even more so than the Joker in The Dark Knight.
