If I would run a skincare company that has a sunscreen with a pump I would write on the bottle how much pump a 1/2 teaspoon is. It’s not that kind of a big deal and it would help so much. For other sunscreens I would make a cap with a line that shows how much sunscreen you should use.

Amazing video! I was always curious as to whether thicker sunscreens require the same quantity as thinner ones to achieve the SPF rating and could rarely find information about it online. I also enjoy using a thinner layer of tinted sunscreen over my regular one because they either tend to be more expensive or look like foundation if applied liberally, but I was slightly concerned that this may negatively affect my SPF protection. This video addressed both of my questions very clearly! I really appreciate it!

I played this in full volume so that my boyfriend can hear because he hasn't been exposed to using sunscreen UNTIL we got together! When you mentioned the mistake of not using sunscreen even when it's cloudy, I screamed because he does that all the time and even tells me to do the same since the sun isn't out! Fortunately, he finally came around and only because his doctor told him he looks way older than his age. He was shocked and had a moment of clarity. LOL We've since done our skincare routine together and he's now very diligent on applying his sunscreen. Thank you so much for this video, it been so helpful for the both of us (even if I was religious with my sunscreen, knowing how to make my routine better is a life saver).

Love this video, Dr. Ellis! I measured my face, bought a gram scale, and figured out I need .8g of sunscreen for my face. Now I weigh all my sunscreens before I apply them and what shocked me is that .8g of most of my favorite sunscreens is closer to 1/8tsp and that I’d been heavily over-applying by going for 2 fingers or 1/4tsp. Kindofstephen has written some really interesting posts about density vs volume vs viscosity when it comes to sunscreen so I’m just glad to have my little gram scale and 1/4 and 1/8 tsp in the bathroom and make sure I’m getting that exact .8g for my face every day since the appearance and texture of sunscreens can be kinda deceiving as to their actual density

Great tips!! Had one of the worst burns of my life on a cloudy day.
If I can add a mistake to the list: not accounting for how close to the equator you are, and likewise how high you are from sea level. (My other two worst burns of my life!).
If you are skiing and 12k feet above sea level, there’s way more harmful rays at that altitude. And if you are close to the equator the suns rays are way stronger.
I’ve seen people so badly burn from napping in the sun in Fiji that they had to go to the emergency room.

Living in Australia sunscreen is an absolute must, but reapplication, particularly over makeup isn’t easy. I recently tried a roll on for reapplication and haven’t looked back - it works! The roller ball doesn’t disturb foundation but still delivers a good amount of product. I then tap it into my foundation. It sinks in and you’re left with a great glow - voila! It’s fast and the packaging is small enough for most handbags too. (For context my foundation is Too Faced born this way and I reapply sunscreen with Ego Sun Sense Performance 50+ UVA & UVB & vitamin B3)

Hey there Anna! Thanks for the tip - so you mean to say that the roll on doesn't have any product, you just use it to reapply both your sunscreen and your foundation throughout the day? Do they sell roll on like these? I've seen only such with product (e.g. deodorants), so I'd be grateful if you could suggest a brand or online store where I could find them. And you don't take anything off before you reapply a layer of each? Thank you, I'm really interested in reapplication, especially with a full face of makeup in mind.

WOW! I am so happy to have this video as my recommendation. Being born in one of the developing countries, my mother didn't allow me to put any sunscreen or any makeup. Hence, started using it only in my late 20s after moving to US. I do have hyper pigmentation and eczema on my eyelid. I definitely use sunscreen everyday now, but looks like I was still applying not enough amount.
I still have a question regarding applying it on days where I am in my apartment the whole day. MY apartment doesn't get any direct sunlight and there are days where I don't go out anywhere. Do I still need to apply it everyday? I use Neutrogena 70 and a tinted DRMTLGY 46 everyday. Could you suggest me on the usage please?
Also about reapplication over the makeup, how to do that? anyone has any suggestions about it?
or a sunscreen for areas around eyes? I have eczema on eyelids so I am scared to put anything over it, except vaseline!

I’m loving skinbetter’s tone smart tinted sunscreen under my make up every day. I love that it adapts to any Fitzpatrick and creates a filter affect under my make up! I’m interested in trying a Korean sunscreen and have a note to myself to find the video where you mentioned one you love 💕

I can't bring myself to reapply in the dead of winter when the UV index is 0 or 1 at noon and I'm at the office from 9 to 5, after applying two fingers in the am (while it's still dark out hehe). In the spring/summer I'll reapply at lunch before going out, and before going home. And if I'm outside all day I'll reapply every 2 hours or less because I have rosacea so I'm careful. But the fall and winter reapply rule is exhausting and I force myself I just stop applying any in the am, at all.

Dr Sam, in the past I've mixed my regular sunscreen (quarter tsp) with a few drops of the ISDIN tinted sunscreen, because it's much darker than my skin tone.

thanks for confirming that we can 'layer' sunscreens but not mix it. i hate physical suncreens on how tacky they feel when the recommended amount is applied, but i do love the tint it gives to the skin especially as someone who has hyperpigmentation but dont like putting make up. now i can put enough chemical sunscreen, and have a little physical sunscreen on top.

Excellent video! I dont use US sunscreens at all. I find them inferior to European and Asian sunscreens. in terms of protection and confort levels when wearing them. Some favorites are Altryit Fluid, LRP Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Hydrating Cream, Skin Aqua NEXTA sunscreen, Canmake Mermaid sunscreen, and SKIN 1004 Madagascar Centella sunscreen.

Totally agree with you. US sunscreens, especially the sprays, are extremely oily. I ran out of sunscreen when I was travelling in the States and felt I was being marinated in oil every time I reapplied sunscreen.

But I guess I’ll have to carry it on my back pack ,
Also I love the ISDIN fusion water

Great tips. No matter what, I wear sunscreen on a daily basis, whether I'm inside or out, sunny or cloudy. I never leave sunscreen in the bathroom either. There's always an extra tube in my handbag in case I'm driving in the middle of the afternoon. Those rays can really get you.
Since I also use Tretinoin at night, I know that it's even more important to use sunscreen. I think I've finally got the message through to my daughters, since they were under the impression that their makeup with sunscreen was good enough.
Thank you again. Hope the baby is doing well, and I wish you and your family a very Happy and Healthy New Year. ❤🎉🎊

I didn't know that mixing sunscreen could lower their efficacy. I usually mix two sunscreens because one of them leaves a slight white cast when used alone. I'll try layering them instead starting tomorrow.

hey dr. ellis! i always struggle with reapplying sunscreen throughout the day because i’ve got acne prone skin and i’ve noticed that when i apply sunscreen on top of skin that hasn’t been freshly cleaned i’m almost certainly going to break out. is there any truth to that or am i connecting dots that aren’t related?
