Lip balm before anything is actually a really great tip. I was putting my retinol on without doing this step first and it definitely started irritating my lips. Putting Vaseline on before my retinol was a small, but important step to stop that.
Thanks for all this information ❤
I appreciate how you showed us a PM routine while you still had breakouts.
Gives me a lot of hope that, as a senior resident in dermatology, no matter how fastidious I am with my skincare routine, my skin will still misbehave once in a while.
Thank you. 😇
I didn’t even notice your blemishes until you mentioned them. Your radiance is profound, and so much more than skin deep. Your mention of being intentional, considering ‘why’ is so meaningful and appreciated. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, Dr. Ellis! ❤
Thank you for being transparent and honest about your skin issues!! You are a role model empowering us that’s ok to have breakouts and still be beautiful 🤩
Yes! Stand in the skin you have! Love this. Thanks for the empowering encouragement and reality check.
This was really helpful in helping me decide if there's anything I need to change with my routine. Thank you!
Thank you Dr Ellis!! You and Dr Dray have help me so much dealing with hyperpigmentation and my journey with tretinoin!! Your skin is beautiful
You rock, Dr. Sam! Simplify my routine!
Thanks for making it simple routine based on everyone needs.I like your honesty
Thank you!!!!!! I appreciate you showing your natural skin which is beautiful. ❤
Thank you for making this video! It is very helpful! Can you do a AM skincare routine in the best order as well?
I appreciate your candor about your own skin care, especially showing us your bare face.. You look splendid, alluring *without makeup*, and that inspires me to be more diligent about taking care of my skin.. I'm a male, obviously, and the tuition you provide on your channel has been most helpful. I even purchased, on your recommendation, Burt's Bees Red Dahlia tinted lip balm just to add a touch of color to my lips; and I really like it.. Thanks.
What a great, quick review of the general rules of layering but a confirmation that there's no data that one HAS to do it a certain way. Those tips about moisturizing before or sandwiching to help tret inflammation is so helpful; I've been stuck at every 3rd day & realize I could fix it that way. Question: how often do you suggest a final "slug" occlusive layer if there is any peeling happening? Keep that short term? Thanks!!!❤🌺🙏
Super helpful! Definitely going to simplify my routine.
Thanks so much for the great info! You do a wonderful job!
Mic drop
Absolutely agree, that sometimes your skin will have bad days and accepting it is a way better approach. I used to the breaking out as teen and young adult. Currently have a couple hormonal break outs but I’m going with the flow, treating it with kindness so I doesn’t leave a souvenir behind. 😂 everywhere else my skin is very beautiful
Thank you for the tip on how to use miceller water on our eye makeup. That helped me a lot!
Thank you for your work with Naturium - I am very impressed by what I’ve tried so far. I’ve tried numerous Retin A-type products and brands, but have been most impressed by their Retinaldehyde for my face, and Retinol for my neck. Because I like these items so much, I will try other Naturium products
I'm so grateful for your videos and education! I've had the worst oily & acne-prone skin my whole life, and have tried everything (acne creams, acne patches, oil blotting sheets, etc) - until I decided to throw in the towel and start from the ground up with a multi-step skincare routine. I always thought it was too big a hassle or too fussy, but I'm so glad I did. I'm 3 months into a ~7-step skincare routine, and it has honestly been LIFECHANGING! My skin is so much younger, radiant, and acne-free that I can't even believe it! I'm still working up to the ~10-steps (with more advanced elements like serums), but I can't believe it took me until my 30's to do this. It was a lot of research, and Dr. Ellis' videos on oily skin products, order to apply products, etc were pivotal. Thank you so much for all you do, you changed my life!
One of your BEST videos. Thanks for showing the human side Dr. Sam!
Hello Donna
Excellent video, thank you!
I saw your bioderma tip years ago and this is always my first cleanser now. I even let it sit on my eyes first as you did. It's also great to use in the morning before an at home workout- no need to dull full morning routine until after the workout.
New to your channel and I loved the video thank you❤️ I learned so much and you’re beautiful & you got a new follow!
Really informative - thank you!
Thanks for making this video!
this video made me subscribe to u. love ur nonjudgmental mentality and realistic vibe. so cool!
Hey Dr. Sam! Thank for a great, entertaining and informational video. Two questions:
1. Do you wash your hands with soap and water between products?
2. How long do you wait between products before applying the next one?
Hope you see this, thanks again :)
THANK YOU so much for doing this video! I struggled with the order of products for a long time, and now I feel like I have a plan. This video was beneficial, and I appreciate it. I also appreciate YOU and the way you give valuable advice so freely. I've never watched one of your videos and felt like it was a waste of time - I always take something away from your messages. Your channel is valuable, and I've learned a lot! Thank you for putting in the time and effort to make valuable content. You're amazing! ❤
I'm really glad you mention putting products on the back of the hands. The back of the hands are important to take care of too! I even put tretinoin on the back of my hand and it doesn't irritate my hand.
Dr. Sam Ellis, this is my favorite CZcams video of all time :') THANK YOU SO MUCH!
You popped up in my "feed" and I'm so glad! Thank You, not only for the information, but for your transparency about having skin issues sometimes. I'm 54, went a long time without acne, started HRT in May, and now I'm not just fighting wrinkles but acne too! Think I need to look into this Tretinoin you mentioned. Thanks again. I'll be checking out your channel again. 😀
I'm also 54 from the UK, and started HRT last year. Within a week the acne started. No issues before. My doctor says it isn't the HRT. Eh, yes it is! I stopped HRT 2 weeks ago and my skin has cleared, first time in over a year! Shame as HRT is great for so much but I can't stand acne!
Just add spironolactane- if hrt was causing acne, spiro will counteract.
This video is full of helpful tips! I just had to watch it again. Your opinion on skin cleansing devices, please 😊 I'm talking about the ones that are really gentle on the skin, I don't want to risk and go for dupes
I have double cleansed for decades but didn’t call it that. It was just removing my makeup then cleansing my face. I got in the habit in my teens when doing theater. In those days, I sometimes had to do a triple cleanse to get it all off.
I changed my opinion of toners, which was that they caused more problems than they were worth, when I first started using K Beauty products. I use several toners, essences, and toner essences for the hydration they provide my skin. I know the effect is temporary, but using them has solved a decades long problem of skin dehydration and the barrier issues that go along with it.
Like you, I always put on a lip balm and eye cream before any retinoid. (It’s a tip I got from another YT derm.) I haven’t had any migration problems into those sensitive areas since I started the practice. I still have sensitivity issues with retinoids around my mouth and nose. I really can’t use them there, but I’ve found that applying a bakuchiol cream in that area offers some of the benefits of retinoids without the pain the retinoids cause. I also do the moisturizer sandwich technique because my skin is extremely sensitive. The sensitivity is why I haven’t been able to go beyond using retinoids three times a week.
Some things that have always baffled dermatologists about my skin are that it can’t handle using the same products daily and some petrochemicals are a big problem-no mineral oil or petrolatum for me. Those are both easily solved by alternating similar products and reading ingredients lists to check for the things my skin can’t handle including salicylates, any form of lanolin, fragrances (including essential oils and terpenes), and others that I can’t think of at the moment but I recognize when I read them. I’m never content with having to alternate products and try to use a single product daily, but I’ve not been able to tolerate that in 50 years of skincare.
One last point, I applaud you for showing us your skin as it is without apology. I wish I were that brave when I was younger. I had a horrible outbreak of cystic acne on the day I had to do a photo shoot and am still embarrassed by those images.
Thanks for sharing your PM skincare, Take care.
Lovely video Dr Sam Ellie, ❤
Very helpful, thank you
super helpful! ty!
Thank u ❤ for doing this with breakout, that's life for many of us.. much Appreciated ..u are so beautiful. Blessings 🙌 ..
Thank you so much for this information. Do you have a morning routine video as well?
Looking for a simple routine - I’ll keep looking thanks
This was so helpful! Would love to see one for the morning!
Thank you for being real and showing that yes we do get pimples! Also loving the list of facial products in order very helpful!
Hey, Dr Sam! Loved this video. About retinoids on the neck, I was able to use my prescription tretinoin 0.025% on my neck *every single night* after building tolerance! I adored my tret, but my derm switched me over to Epiduo. Hopefully he'll put me back on it 💖
Do you use Epiduo together with other products? I am so confused as I've been told to use it only by itself. So: cleans>Epiduo>bed. Now I saw this video am I'm so confused :o had no idea it could be used with even moisture. Let alone acids
Hi,lovely video routine explained with much clarity. Very helpful. I like using aloe Vera gel. Can it be considered a toner / serum replacement?
Fantastic! Can you do one for morning??
I love how you are so honest and show how no one can have perfect skin even with a perfect routine!! Thank you 🙂 is used to be so hard on myself because I felt I shouldn’t get any pimples at all!
I would love to know your thoughts about the retinol on the neck in the morning…do you need to wash it off since you will be going into the sun or is it not a problem since it’s been on there so long! I use tretinoin on my face and obviously wash that off but would love to try this one for my neck! Thoughts on this?! Thanks!!
Hi! If you can, definitely apply your retinol/tretinoin to your neck! Start slowly, and eventually you could use it every night, like I used to.
No need to wash off your Tretinoin anywhere.
I really like your advice. I watch other derms online and what you say is smart-don’t overdo it, but focus on any issues you have. Less is probably more. I actually have good skin. I do use Tretinoin, but only a few nights in the week. I also use Vitamin C in the day under my moisturizer. I use AHA some nights. I go by the rule thinner to thicker. I use occlusive moisturizers over my actives since I have dry skin.
Great video! How long should we wait in between each product application? Thanks!
Great question!
Yes how long do we need to wait?
@@MEF7after the layer dries. Serums dry very quickly
I’ve always enjoyed your channel. But your speech around the 11 minute mark…….. you are now my favorite! Preach! Yes!! They need to find something better to do than make fun of us non-perfect-skin folks!!!!
I wish there was a "love" button for your videos!
Good point on people who use a lot of serums that have one ingredient!! Like with The Ordinary, a lot of people love it because they’re affordable, but if you get a serum that have like 5 or 6 of those things combined, and it costs like let’s say $80 then it’s technically cheaper than The ordinary individual serums. Too much to keep track of. I have enough to worry about! Lol 😂
I get that but o always wonder if they have enough of each active to be effective .
Hi. Will you please do a video on layering your prequel products? ❤
What do you recommend for the first cleanse? Your videos has helped me so much establish an affordable skincare regiment.
Love this!!! I wanted to ask tho- how many days a week should one use the azaleic aid? Is every night too much? I like to use it for rosacea !
Thank you for this great information.... I started using Night Shift on my neck and décolleté because my retinol was irritating... omg I love it and can use it every night without irritation 😊
Yay so happy to hear that! I think it’s such a special product!
Dr.Ellis
Thank you for the great skincare routine order. I am new to your channel. There is so much talk about Castor Oil for your face and neck. I wanted to know your advice on this. I'd appreciate it. Thanks😊
I use the same azelaic acid! I absolutely love the naturium one so much better than the ordinary. It really helps with my redness and pore clogging. I use it in the morning though now that I see you combine it with tretinoin, I kinda wanna try too🤔
just found your you tube, am 75 and would so much like to see the best way to do a morning and evening routine on a pensioners, budget, plus super sensitive to products around eyes. Thankyou in advance,
Thank you so much
Thanks for the great video! I alternate between retinol and acids (usually AHA) every night but I’d like to use retinol every night. Would you recommend layering AHA serum under retinol?
Thank you ❤️❤️
Thanks for this. Very good. Many people fix their acne by removing all dairy from their diet. Also what do you think of bakuchtiol?
Love your videos!!!
Can you also include the product prices ?
Excellent - very useful. But why is everyone on CZcams saying “go in with” instead of “apply?”
Hello doctor Sam!
Could you please talk about vitamin d deficiency and sun exposure? ☀️
I love your video! I wish you were in SoCal where I live. I’ve never been to a dermatologist and desperately need help on how to take care of my very dry and aging skin. Do you do Zoom consults?
Hi, there! I have started to use tripollar radiofrequency home device at night and I wondered if after I could use my usual retinol serum or it could cause irritation or damage. Thank you, I really enjoyed this video!
Wow, my routine is almost exactly like yours except the brands are different. I use the cetaphil hydrating cleanser, naturium salicylic acid exfoliant, and the naturium vitamin c serum, and the naturium azelaic acid emulsion, and the crave PM moisturizer. Then the naturium spf
I got the misceller water yesterday and I LOVE IT! And even though my husband won’t do a full skincare routine, if I hand him a round with this on, he will at least do that!!! Amazing.
Love to hear this!!
Regarding morning skincare routine, when do you add sunscreen
Lips 💋 first! #BRILLIANT TY! 🥳
Thank you!!! 🙂 Any suggestions for eye cream if Milian exists?
Great video I am a new subscriber❤️🙏
I love a good face oil so I always put a drop or two after my moisturizer at night. My skin looks and feels great in the morning. 🙂
Hi,
I like you video. For how long you should wait before applying each layer and is it okay applying retinoid while exfoliating the skin on the same night?
Thank you
I also use the Laneige Balm and love the way it feels on the skin when you have it on. Is also pretty hyped..
Unfortunately it is not very caring, when I wake up in the morning my lips are not better cared for than before....
How long should you wait between layering products? Thanks this is so helpful ❤
Hi how long to wait between applying the different products on your face. Thanks
You have beautiful, long, natural eyelashes😍
I’m a first time mom with a 3 month old boy.
Hoping you can give me some advice on starting a skin care routine. I’ve never used retinols or any anti aging products but I’d love to start as I think I’m already late in the game. I just don’t know what to start using and also in what order. Would appreciate your thoughts on this! :) also should mention baby is on formula only.
Thanks in advance xx
Love this information! Just discovered channel 🎉 I used to live in the next town over😂
After 1 1/12 yrs of using Retin A script ( now .05) I have never had any reaction or dryness- I'm 70 ,very fair- most sun discoloration is gone but should I go up in dosage? I'm the one that needs to tell my dermo next week😂
Dr. Ellis, I’m 52 years old. My current nighttime routine is (La Roche Posay products) Cleanser, Retinol, and Moisturizer. I’d like to add Hyaluronic Acid now…..please tell me when and if it’s safe!
What do you think of using Vaseline on lips at bedtime? My lips seem dry most of the time. I haven’t given it much thought. I do keep my lips covered with lipstick during the day.
Hi Dr. Sam, years ago I used Differin for acne cysts but i developed an allergy to it. Terrible itchy welts on my face. Should I avoid trying Tretinoin? I can use a retinol with no problems but was curious if you think Retin A would still irritate my skin?
I use Dermelect Self esteem sleep serum with glycolic, salicylic and L- Ascorbic acid at night. I usually alternate using that on one night and my tretinoin the next. Can I use them both on the same night since you suggested using tretinoin ever night? Thanks. Yes-an am skincare video would be great as well.
So you listed serum before Tretinoin- would that be like my SkinMedica TNS before my Retin A? I don’t have dark spots or acne but I am 74. What serum if any would I use after my essence (SKII)?
Also do you have a video about exfoliaters? I have the Dermelect but never used it. I have dry eye so always too overly careful
I LOVE your channel❤️
I’m terrible with my skin thx for sharing with followers 🧸
I enjoy a good balm to go in for male up it always seems to melt it off realy well
An informative video, but so many products! I`m too tried in the evening to layer all of them and wait for each one to sink into my skin! I do double cleanse, then retinol, lip balm and after 10 minutes I put on moisturiser(when I can be bothered) I do use a facial oil, once a month for a week, but that week I do not use the retinol. Keep up the good and informative videos.
What oil would you use to do face massage and at what point would you suggest doing that? At the beginning or end?
Can you do a video on gel polish?
Waaaait a second! :o
Why have I always been told to use retinols alone and only by themselves??
That's my reason for applying them every 2,3 nights..
I had zero idea one could use it in the middle of other skincare products!! So it has always been:
remove makeup>cleanse>retinol>bed.
I use either 1% retinol cream or Epiduo..
Do you hold off on the moisturizer for 20-30 min to let retinol soak in ??
I was told to do that but sometimes am confused if I really have to.
If you use Azelaic Acid, hyalauronic acid and face oil in your routine, what order should they be in?
I definitely let an over saturated cotton round soak micellar water into my (waterproof) mascara for like a whole minute and it doesn’t get like half of it off. Especially on the underside of the lashes where there’s less contact. I guess it depends on the mascara you use?
I use hyaluronic acid and then CeraVe night cream with ceramides & niacinamide. But, I recently bought Amylactin with 15% Lactic acid. How should I work the Amylactin into my skin care routine?
Thanks Dr. Ellis! I have oily/acne prone/sensitive skin (so much PIH ) and I was wondering when was the best time to use/best way to layer the "acne treatment" (benozyl peroxide or salicylic acid) and then skin treatment serum (retinol or lactic/glycolic acid)
I personally use salicylic acid/glycolic acid during my morning routine and finish with sunscreen. I use retinol every other night.I don't use benzoyl peroxide anymore but if I had to I would put it during nights that I don't use retinol. Hope this helps!
I always used my BP in the morning after applying any serum and sunscreen. I use a serum type sunscreen with SPF 50 by LaRoche Posy. The BP really prevents my skin from becoming too oily during the day. I only put it on my T zone and acne prone areas. I use the retinA at night under a light layer of moisturizer. I wash with a glycolic acid cleanser about twice a week, rather than using glycolic acid gel or cream, which makes my skin red and dry. Otherwise I use a very mild cleanser, I really like Vanicream gentle foaming cleanser and it’s priced right.
When do you apply vitamin c? Can you apply collagen and retinol water first too in the beginning of your skin routine?
I have rosacea & use a prescription Azelaic acid gel 15%,. When would I use it in my routine? I only use it once a day in the morning. I use e.l.f holy hydration cleansing, gel, e.l.f. Holy hydration toner, the azelaic acid then e.l.f holy hydration moisturizer. Your comments would be appreciated.
I am a new subscriber. I am 70 and use a CPAP therapy. Unfortunately the manufacturer does not recommend using a nighttime moisturizer as it will affect the mask seal. Is there anything you would recommend to use with the mask? Thank you.
