The PRS SE DGT is an awesome guitar, I have made some updates to mine, such as- Brass Saddles, Brass Block, Locking Tuners. It is now more like a custom guitar than a stock production. Just awesome.
I’m honestly surprised to hear that for IG being as you state “an awesome guitar” you still had to add upgrades. Preference or necessary upgrades? (Yes I did hear comments but still….) Fret ends needed to be taken down? A 7 out of 10 rating does not sound awesome IMHO. Still I appreciate your video and thoughts. I have 3 PRS SE models and looking to acquire the SWS soon. So far no upgrades needed, maybe I got lucky
You want some fucking hype get a McCarty 594 S2. I'm an old guy with vintage Gibson, Fender, and Marshall stuff I bought myself back in the 80s. When I finally broke down and decided to try a PRS I knew I wanted a higher end model. I found the S2 line it seemed like a great place to start. I never thought anything could touch my 92 1960 Les Paul Classic Reissue. The S2 blew me away completely. The hardware and the finish the fretwork and binding every single thing about this guitar was perfect. Made in USA Nitro finish the finish is dreamy. Real nitro feel not just the word nitro on the ad. Super thin finish too it's perfect. The pickups are perfect and it has classic mahogany spank like a real Gibson style guitar should have. Dare I say it's a better take on the Gibson than Gibson has offered in decades. If checked out the SE line and I was pleasantly surprised. If you want a real treat spend a few hundred $ more and get an S2. It's basically a $3500 model with a basic maple top rather than a carved select piece of maple with real binding. Like a Gibson studio. Same guitar!!
I think its been a reasonably common thing over the years that the S2 is a great place to be in the PRS line up. Only very recently has the SE line been as good as it is now and for some im sure it even replaces what the S2 was before - hence the huge discounts were seeing here on the S2 like the one in this vid. Id be curious on the pricing difference on PRS in general in $ to £. Ill have to check that out.
I just think the first few shipments were in such high preorders QC slipped a little at both ends. Im sure when there listed instock and all preorders are gone theyll be less chance of an issue Cheers for watching 🤘
I've had the DGT for about 2 months now. The neck is fantastic. BTW concerning the push pull the solution is just lilt the knob from underneath with your finger to get it up. I have one of the first PRS Custom's made. I have been spoiled but the Sound and Playability is my main concern with the DGT and it seems to be 100% in that respect.
I've just watched the first video, and while I can see that you're now happy with the guitar, I'm astonished that some important aspects of a guitar costing nearly £1k were so poor that they required the kind of remedial action that only a competent guitar tech can manage, and you seem to have just accepted that. Did you just buy it online from a box-shifter, or did you play it in a shop first? Even if it was bought online, at that price I'd expect it to be set up properly on arrival. FWIW I bought a new Squier CV 50s Strat from a proper music shop, and gigged with it a couple of days later because they'd made sure it was properly adjusted before it went on display.
Have to leave this one to Steve to answer its his guitar not mine, although he is also a competent tech so i guess it bothers him less but nonetheless worth mentioning.
Hi, it’s a sad reality for me that I kind of expect small problems with EVERY guitar I buy online 😢. As I don’t live anywhere too close to decent guitar shops I don’t buy in person as I should. Also it could be that I am very picky and find things other people wouldn’t 😂. Lastly I quite enjoy honing my skills regarding setup / refining so a part of me is looking forward to doing it even on an expensive item.
I think % wise it wouldnt make a difference. They would both loose money in that sense. The S2s that are on offer and all the other PRS mad offers atm is killing the used prices on them
@@Paul-D yeah, the quality/$ of the newer SEs are leaving the S2 in limbo. I’m just thinking that the “made in America” helps with value long term. SE DGT may be so overbuilt in a year that they become the lower price SS SE in a year from now
Yeh it's very possible, Maybe really long term the S2 is the better longer term. I guess resale value isn't everything, and if whatever PRS is doing that makes huge discounts here atm is good for us buyers getting better value haha. One thing for sure though, a full price £2,000+ S2.... id be buying an Eastman.
I've got a similar set up. My SE DGT is the Tobacco burst. The nut was cut short. Strange!!!!. PRS took it back and put a new one in. Then a week ago i got S2 594, in matte pink. Heavy and AMAZING!!!
@Paul-D Yeah, I kind of look like pepto bismol, hahaha. Of the two, I prefer the se 594. I prefer the pickups. To me, they're more versatile and dynamic.
Ah thats interesting. I think they both fit the bracket of a lower output more vintage pickup - but to me the Mcarty ones were a little hotter then the DGT.
Hi, thanks for video! Currently looking at both of these guitars. The best pricing I can find the UK today is £1299 & £799. Not an insignificant difference. If you could only have one, which would it be and why please? Thanks
When the video came out there were priced within £50 of eachother so its changed slightly. PRS prices in the UK have been all over the place last year or so haha. Personally now, id have the DGT because its way cheaper and i see zero reason the S2 is worth the extra.
Would you grab a double cut S2 594 (while there are still a few cheap ones in the UK) before the DGT? Kinda want both but the DGT is standard full price everywhere for now.
Think in general neither of us consider the S2 better then the DGT. In fact the DGT pickups and splits is slightly nicer. However an S2 will retain a little more resale value if that’s important to you.
Thanks Paul. Only other factor for me is that I prefer bigger frets and wanted the DGT for those, which are meant to be jumbo, but some reports say they aren't noticeably bigger than the usual medium jumbos on an SE or S2.
I loved the pick ups of the dgt... i didn't buy it because of the rosewood board ... it was sooo dry ... i have problems with open pores ... i didn't bond with the rosewood unfortunately .... if they could do an ebony board version .... i think the money went on the pick ups ...
Surprised on the rosewood front there, they seem to be one of the few getting decent rosewood in outside of custom shop / boutique builders. But i guess its hit and miss right. Although, as a huge Eastman fan im with you on the ebony
Tried it on a harley benton with a yatoba fret board.. it was a cheap b stock prs style guitar with p90 ...i regularly use lemon oil and extra vergin olive oil too being italian ahaha... i owned an s2 with rosewood board and traded it for a ce 24 with an ebony fretboard... it must have been a limited run ... it was second hand from guitar guitar b'ham ... love that one ... The only thing i'd say about Prs is that sometimes they are soo beautiful to look at like a piece of art and make perfect tools for session people as they are so versatile ... the only gripe is ... sometimes they lack personality... i never tried a wood library ... briefly handled a core one ... struggled to justify 3.5 k price tag although i see why people buy them ... They are stunning and make u play with a lot of ease ... of course the more you pay the more attention and time go on the instrument... i think ce is the best value for money level with Prs
That’s true like in the USA for a fender it costs 1400 dollars and here it’s £1600 that’s 2000 dollars so I don’t know how on average we are spending 600 dollars more for the same guitar

Definitely with massive PRS discounts happening the last 12 months or so its the DGT thats still the hardest to get for a reason.

A couple great sounding guitars!

Thaks - very useful update! I'm still pondering whether I should go for the DGT after seeing the issues some people have had with them.
I just think the first few shipments were in such high preorders QC slipped a little at both ends.

When I had my store I had a 1986 PRS custom 24. it was amazing haha
The scale length difference between McCarty and DGT is actually .406 inches...so just over 3/8 of an inch .
Yeh i was taking piss with 0.000 🤣 its not that small haha

Great video. Excellent analysis and nice playing! From a “holding/appreciating value perspective” at the same purchase price, S2 or SE DGT?
I think % wise it wouldnt make a difference. They would both loose money in that sense. The S2s that are on offer and all the other PRS mad offers atm is killing the used prices on them

@@Paul-D Where I am in Canada I can get the SE DGT (new) and S2 Standard 22 (used) for $1300. Resale value may be what it comes down to should I buy.
Thats fair dude, i would go for whichever one your likely to play and enjoy the most. Worry about resale another time haha
I've got a similar set up. My SE DGT is the Tobacco burst. The nut was cut short. Strange!!!!. PRS took it back and put a new one in. Then a week ago i got S2 594, in matte pink. Heavy and AMAZING!!!

Specifically which locking tuners, please?

I also prefer bigger frets. Like alot lol. I would say they are similar but both ‘feel’ jumbo enough for my fussy preference haha.

Try linseed oil on the board - it gives a nice smooth feel😊

I don't like how cunning the pricing policy is between US and UK ...
It seems we are getting a worse deal over here ...
Yeh its very strange. Worse deal at full price but some absolutely insane discounts too on others.

What strings (size and brand) did you put on it?
Pretty sure he put on ernie ball 10-46s
10-46 elixir 👍🏼
Sire H7 T7 L7 & S7 Larry Carlton models blow the S2 outta the water.
Heard alot of good things about those. Need to get my hands on one
As it happens ….I may have just purchased a H7😂
