Linda Ronstadt is widely regarded as having the best and most versatile singing voice of the 20th century. She can sing ANY and EVERY genre of modern music and has tackled them all with her precision and angelic tone. MY favorite album of hers is Prisoner In Disguise, a criminally underrated Desert Island album for me. Her Spanish language songs are just jaw-dropping, even compared to her performance here. No other singer in the 20th century could even touch her, other than maybe Karen Carpenter.
You can find interviews with her, where she talks about still singing in her head. She's made peace with the fact that she can no longer sing. And she's still very beautiful.
She had one of the most powerful voices of anyone, both male or female. A gift from God. This drop dead gorgeous woman, was one of the top stars of the mid to late 1970s.
Bless her heart..she's an older lady now who suffers with Parkinson's. But in her day...no one could touch her talent. Except maybe Karen Carpenter. I have those two as top tier talent back when music really moved you.
Linda dominated female singers and rightfully so. I think being a woman in the business was a hurdle and usually got less radio play time. jus an incredible one of a kind talent and career. I loved the Kennedy Honors, she so deserved the tribute.
Sonya, I am a long time music fan, mainly classical and jazz, and notable vocals. I think that there have been many, many great male vocalists, and near impossible to put any one on top. But Linda sets on top of all female vocalists, including today's Lady gaga (who can really sing) and Taylor swift, who has sold over 300 million albums, as compared to Linda's 100 million. I put Linda in a similar category as Mozart, clearly a whole cut above everyone else. And I agree that Karen Carpenter is the one who comes the closest, but she lacked the complete range and the ower Linda had. Vincent (09-06-2020)
Back in 1989 I married the woman of my dreams this was one of hers and mine favorite songs. In 2011 she passed away after a 7 year battle with ovarian cancer. I played this song along with 2 others at her service. This is the 1st time I've listened to it since then. Me and my boys miss her so much and this song just makes me cry and smile at the same time.. Thanks for playing it.
Jim Frederick My favorite Linda Ronstadt video is her recording Karla Bonhoff's "Lose Again, " in the recording studio with her stalwart musicians Andrew Gold and Kenny Edwards and her manager looking on. She was famously her harshest critic, but in this video, when she sings that last note, she seems to know she nailed it. She looks into the camera and gives a little shrug-happy and humble at the same time. Endearing to see Jamel react to her for the first time. That same look crossed the faces of millions of young men all those many decades ago.
@@lnl3237 Karla Bonoff is a treasure - so many great songs, both lyrically and the melody. Linda championed her and other musicians by seeking them out and using them, which helped both. Linda and Karla sure produced some great classics. I think she talked Karla into doing her own singing/gigs, etc. Your so right about her "perfectionism", and she sure did surround herself with great back-up musicians !!! I have seen her in concert, too. I'm grateful .
@@KindCountsDeb3773 Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. Ms. Ronstadt has become my musical mentor these days and has taken me on quite a journey. Was just a casual fan back in the day; I was an old movie buff who really got excited when she entered her Nelson Riddle phase. Will always regret not seeing her live-you were fortunate indeed. They say her voice live was just a natural wonder to behold. Heard her in a radio interview from the early 80's say she wanted to record an album of just Karla Bonhoff songs. My interest in Ms. Bonhoff was really piqued when I saw her in the documentary "The Sound of My Voice" last fall. Bought a 2 CD set earlier this year and just love it. Have CZcamsd her singing as a member of the band Bryndle with other Linda Ronstadt band members Andrew Gold and Kenny Edward's and Wendy Waldman as a backup vocalist. My favorite Karla Bonhoff songs are "Goodbye My Friend" (my 14 year old dog is snoring at my feet as I type this-but this is the song pet owners turn to when they lose their critters; Ms. Bonhoff wrote it after losing her 16 year old cat) and "The Water Is Wide." And if course, Linda Ronstadt's versions are just as lovely and moving. Thanks again for responding-it's a lonely, sad time in the world and it's comforting to have the beautful, familiar voices of the artists we love to reassure us, entertain us, and remind us of our common humanity. Also, great to see younger generations discovering and marveling at the voice of this extraordinary and beautiful woman. All the best to you.
Saw her in concert 3 times....just her and her fine back up players....each known in their own right. She was delightful, beautiful, gracious and funny. Pitch perfect and captivating. This pretty girl with the beguiling eyes and mega voice would grab hold of your musical soul and poured out an unforgettable evening. I had all her albums. There is quite a large body of work. Duets , trios and ventures into different genres and cultures. A serious artist Miss Linda. Thanks Jamal. Always love your reactions. I know I can expect an honest and respectful take on an artist.
Ah finally! Linda Ronstadt is one of the best song stylists/ interpreters ever. If her voice "strikes a chord" with you, it's because she was the queen of "cover" songs in the 70s. She took many pop hits from the 60s (A Different Drum, Tracks of My Tears, Just One Look, You're No Good) and made them mega pop/ rock hits throughout the 70s. She can literally sing every style & genre of music... Even in Spanish! Her dynamic vocal range as you can hear totally captivates the heart and soul. She's passionate singer!
well said ! Your right about her expanding her genre's of music. She was SERIOUS and dedicated to her music. Never rested on her laurels. What a voice !!
This is Linda at the height of her pop/rock powers. Amazing band with the wonderful Don Grolnick on keyboards and the soooo underrated Waddy Wachtel on lead guitar. Absolute tragedy she can no longer sing but has left an incredible archive of material. You will probably know Blue Bayou, one of her biggest hits - great range in that song. Legend! Favourite album - 1974 Heart Like A Wheel - absolute killer track, Dark End of The Street - check her soaring vocals near the end of the song - goosebumps every time.
Yes ! I thought that was Wachtel, didn't they call him Wass? and didn't he produce as well ? She expected to do her best, and getting the best musicians that had similar goals was a real plus. The "reaction" (Jamal is the best) videos on YT are re-connecting me to my musical history. I'm a boomer, so I had the 60/70/80's as my era of music - we were so lucky !! MOST of the voices today can't compare to the ones I heard. No auto tune, either. I think that's what strikes some younger people about the music from those years, the voices, musicians all stood out and were more "pure" in their recordings/playing.
Songs: Silver Threads and Golden Needles, At The Dark End of the Street, Love Has No Pride, That'll Be the Day, Prisoner in Disguise, Love is a Rose, Hey Mister That's Me Up On the Jukebox, Roll Um Easy, Desperado, Heat Wave, too many to name. She did everybody's songs, from the Eagles, to Neal Young, all the way back to the 50s with Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers, and all the greats. I have all her records.
Anything Linda sang with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra should bring some goosebumps and a few tears to your eyes! Pure and timeless magic! My favorite would have to be "What's New". Give it a try!!!
Followed Linda since forever. Although I love her more well known numbers it is usually the lesser known songs that really showcase her vocal abilities.
We all know why all the musicians and men feel in love with sweet Linda. I remember her in 1968 or 69 with The Stone Ponies on a summer series that featured current talent. She was as beautiful on inside as she was on the outside. Loved Linda doing music with Dolly and Emmylou Harris. Harmony unmatchable. We love you Linda 💞✌
YES!!! One of the greatest voices of all time. I wondered when you would get here. She has a vast catalogue spanning over 30 years through different genres. You can travel down this road for a while for sure 😊
She is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. She could sing the phone book!! She lost the ability to sing because of Parkinson's disease. What a loss!! Thank you Jamal for the song!! Have a great day!
she did say that she sometimes STILL sings with her family, at home Like they used to do. She doesn't want to disappoint her fans or herself. She cares a LOT about her ability to sing it right. She is a treasure.
Of all of Ronstadt's catalog, this one particular song for me captured her most vulnerable voice. The lyrics have you live in that same sense of despair when you need to be loved and settle for a one-night stand. She lets her heart break right before you. We all had been there wanting the next morning to matter and realizing that it never did.
Yes, she's alive and living in San Francisco. She doesn't perform any more due to Parkinson's Disease, but she hasn't lost her sense of humor or her spirit. One of the greats. My husband had such a crush on her back in the day! Beautiful.
She is my idol. I am a singer... Growing up... I learned to sing listening to her. It's a damn shame that she can't sing anymore.. parkinson's disease is awful.
Silver Threads and Golden Needles, Desperado, love has no pride, long way around, bet no one ever hurt this bad, blue bayou, long long time, in my reply, etc etc. The list of outstanding Linda Ronstadt songs is so long. You really cant go wrong. To me her first 5 solo albums are the best.
@@BPF57 haha thanks man. I know shes probably known best as a massive rock and pop star but I've been a 60s and 70s country fan my whole life, and her first 5 (and 6-8 a little less) are just pure country gold. A ton of the songs aren't really known at all, like a couple of the ones I mentioned, and those are my favorites. Those first 5 albums in my opinion is some of the best country ever recorded. Especially her 3rd album which I think gets lost. The personnel on that album is jaw droppingly good.
Yes... Desperado, definitely! You just want to melt. I think it was Glen Frey (of the Eagles) who essentially said that their big hit song was not really a success until Linda released her version of it.
@@jaangoad5855 that would make sense. Commercially, Desperado was a massive dud at its release (even though it's my favorite eagles album) and the radio stations had no idea what to do with it. Too country for the rock stations and too rock for the country stations and their lowest selling record. Alot of country/rock fusion bands had this problem finding an audience that appreciated both genres
@Colleen tumbling dice is a fantastic song! Both ronstadt's version and the stones original version, that whole album Exile on main st. is my favorite stones album
Bless her heart she did an interview after being honored at Kennedy Center and her mind and health arent good. A few years ago I heard a great interview with (one of her last) on NPR where she and the host talk about their Parkinson's Disease and they knew they were near the end of talking and Linda was so upset to lose the singing. However she felt she had done it all. God I love her.
One of the best vocalists in history. So sad she can no longer sing. Have to give big props to her guitarist Waddy Wachtel for his work on this. He toured with her for years while also being a member of Keith Richards band, The Expensive Winos. He's still working with an incredible talent, as he is musical director and guitarist for Stevie Nicks
Lucky you!! I wish I'd seen her live. Such a beautiful talented singer. Her voice & range, the magic she does with the songs she covers - wow!! Love Linda.
The song itself is stunning. It is haunting and sad and soulful. Amazing arrangement, musicianship, and then there is Linda’s subtle and powerful voice. “Hits you right in your soul.” You got that right Jamel❤️
She was a SUPER STAR! She was everywhere, you need to watch the commentary that’s out on her now, it illustrates how she created her career the way she wanted it...regardless of the powers that be telling her she needed to do it their way.
Linda Rondstadt, Kenny Rodgers, and Neil Diamond were my mother's trifecta of music. As I started to form my own musical tastes (about 12-14), I mostly got into Metal, Progressive and Blues Rock, and Classical, but her stuff has also always stayed with me.
She has a rare condition called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, which is similar to Parkinson's disease. Interview with her from last year. www.cnn.com/2019/12/28/entertainment/linda-ronstadt-anderson-cooper-intv/index.html
Go on the LINDA Ronstadt journey, please do it. She's Incredible and watch "The sound of my voice" a recent documentary about her having Parkinson's and lost her ability to sing. Growing up we had family dinners at the table together and would always play her albums so Her music was in my house big time. "Long Long Time" is probably my favorite Song of hers.
I teared up when I watched that documentary. She was a big part of the soundtrack of my life. I knew she had Parkinson's, but when I saw that doc it encapsulated how I truly felt about her.
I still get goosebumps listening to her voice. She is my favorite female singer. Not many female singers back in late 70's. Male dominant bands. So blessed to have grown up in late 70's.
Linda was the queen in 1977. It’s amazing that she is left off of greatest female singers list. I mean for several years she was the top selling female artist and radio stations built playlists around her singles.
I was 17 in 1977. You can only imagine the effect this amazing combination of beauty and talent had on me and every other 17 boy in America. She did a ton of recording in the late 70's. Her career has covered the California Country era on into pop and even full on country when she did an album with Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton. After that she went back to her roots and begin recording Mexican folk music. Her dad was Mexican and I saw her on a recent documentary were she said they spoke English in her house but sang in Spanish. She's still alive but sadly has developed a medical condition that has affected her voice. And yes I like every other 17 year boy had a huge crush on her which I never really got over.
She just received the Kennedy Center Honors Award last year. Sadly, she has Parkinson's and can no longer sing. At one time, her band consisted of Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner, and Bernie Leadon who left her band and formed The Eagles. Not sure if you have reacted to The Eagles, but that is another rabbit hole. Be careful however, The Eagles tend to be blockers. Rock on Brother Jamal.
That's Waddy Wachtel on guitar. You can see and hear him on a lot of Stevie Nicks songs. He has always been Stevie's guitar player, outside of Fleetwood Mac of course. That was Lindsey Buckingham.
I haven't heart that song for over 25 years! Linda had all the musicians in love with her.. A very sweet person is how she is described by friends. So sad that she cant sing any longer. We love you Linda. She had many hits!💞
Yes, please! More Linda! She has many great amazing hits on CZcams! She is one of the best, if not THE best!! Try Desperado, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Talk to Me of Mendocino, Tracks of My Tears, Willin’, and the Trio (with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris) hits High Sierra, Feels Like Home, Blue Train, and so many more!! She is the Best of The Best!! 👍👍👍 Also, her LIVE duet with Hoyt Axton, Lion in a Winter! Just a few tasty treats that are out there. (Find the live performances where you can.) Love your reactions, Jamel - your appreciation of beautiful music and amazing talent.
I had never seen this live video of her's before, thanks for making me aware of it... her performance is superb! I recommend a feature length documentary to you, it's called "Linda Ronstadt: The Sound Of My Voice". 👍
Hey, yeah! Linda, our hometown Tucson girl, made good! My brother (7 yrs. older than I) saw her perform in coffee houses down near the University of Arizona in the '60s. My wife was classmate of her niece, and her nephew is my bass luthier. Sadly, Parkinsons has forced Linda to retire "early."
Linda's work product consists of 28 studio albums, 63 singles and a live album
Her tours had no fancy dancing, backup dancers, fireworks, smoke effects.
Just the band, their instruments and a tiny woman standing behind a microphone with a voice that few can touch.
Yep, you nailed it...
Don't overlook her backing vocals on a lot of rock and pop albums

Silver Threads and Golden Needles, Desperado, love has no pride, long way around, bet no one ever hurt this bad, blue bayou, long long time, in my reply, etc etc. The list of outstanding Linda Ronstadt songs is so long. You really cant go wrong. To me her first 5 solo albums are the best.
Jamel do these please, all these are great!
Outstanding! Love Has No Pride, Desperado, Long Long Time are 3 of her most famous ballads from her early years. Live versions of her are impeccable!
Oh Baby Baby (too)
Jamel, Linda can also Rock & Roll! She's in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!
Yes, Linda is one of the all time greats!
I keep coming back to this, for the reaction just to see your face, and of course Linda.
What a beauty and that voice is chilling
I heard Linda in concert in the mid 70's and she was the sweetest most endearing performer I ever saw.
David Eldridge lucky you! She is one of my absolute favorites. I am sad I never got to see her perform in person, and now I never will. :(
Yes, I got to see her at Red Rocks in Denver. An iconic singer in an iconic venue. whoa
@@KindCountsDeb3773 I can only imagine!
This is one Linda Ronstadt song I hadn't heard before, but I just added it to Spotify. She's got a great voice, and, yes, she's a babe too.
This is one of my favorites of hers. So glad you watched the live version because it's amazing and really shows off her voice.
Jamel - Love your reaction!! Now you know what we've older folks have known for years; her beauty and talent was limitless in her day. Thanks. 👍
One of the great female voices of the 20 century. One of the all time great live performers.
I keep coming back just to see the look on your face when you hear Linda’s voice for the first time.
Jamel she is still alive. She has Parkinson's disease. She was such an amazing singer. Please please do blue bayou that is one of my favs of hers. ✌✌✌
She has a rare condition called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, which is similar to Parkinson's disease. Interview with her from last year. www.cnn.com/2019/12/28/entertainment/linda-ronstadt-anderson-cooper-intv/index.html
@@wickedmirage Yes. And she's having a tough time. Her fans suffer with her. Love you Ms. Linda!
@@palafox2237 She is handling it pretty well though.
@@KindCountsDeb3773 hope so indeed!
Yeah you gotta hear Blue Bayou.
No one can sing like Linda. Love her.
She does a killer version of "tumbling dice".
"Your no good" is another great song!
Yes! Tumbling Dice!
Yes. Tumbling dice is awesome
You’re No Good is very good
Go on the LINDA Ronstadt journey, please do it. She's Incredible and watch "The sound of my voice" a recent documentary about her having Parkinson's and lost her ability to sing. Growing up we had family dinners at the table together and would always play her albums so Her music was in my house big time. "Long Long Time" is probably my favorite Song of hers.
Long long time is my all-time favorite Linda Ronstadt song. However I was not familiar with the song that's playing now and I am enthralled.
I have requested LONG LONG TIME 10 times. Hopefully soon. It's my favorite but this one I hadn't recalled hearing. Love!
I teared up when I watched that documentary. She was a big part of the soundtrack of my life. I knew she had Parkinson's, but when I saw that doc it encapsulated how I truly felt about her.
Back when music was real and musicians played instruments and sang.
Without auto-tuning
I still get goosebumps listening to her voice. She is my favorite female singer. Not many female singers back in late 70's. Male dominant bands. So blessed to have grown up in late 70's.
This is one of my favorite songs by Linda, from her 1976 album Hasten Down the Wind.
This is absolutely my favorite song by her.
She sounds familiar because she was a huge star and rightly so. God bless you Linda, You are awesome!
The great Linda Ronstadt. A true Song Bird.
Welcome aboard! Linda the LEGEND!
The voice of an angel. A gift from God.
Hers was a God-given talent. “Right in your soul”, is right. God bless. xo
Linda was the queen in 1977. It’s amazing that she is left off of greatest female singers list. I mean for several years she was the top selling female artist and radio stations built playlists around her singles.
Wonderful! The first time I heard Queen's We Will Rock You it was sung by Linda. She could do anything!
Isn't that so sad she can't sing anymore. She is an icon.
Such a beautiful and haunting voice. She is such a beautiful and talented lady. 3 decades of great music .
She had many hits!💞
definitely 'in love' with LInda-drop dead gorgeous!
She's my hometown hero! You can thank her for the Eagles too. They were her band, The Stone Ponys.
She covered Smokey's, Tears of a Clown.
(Find the live performances where you can.) Love your reactions, Jamel - your appreciation of beautiful music and amazing talent.
wasn't Desperado in this concert as well? I know it's on video.
My Father was from the big band era, he loved Linda’s singing,
I had never seen this live video of her's before, thanks for making me aware of it... her performance is superb!
Sadly, Parkinsons has forced Linda to retire "early."
stole my heart in '74!! never gave it back
