But that vocal quality was there with so many singers from the 1950s and '60s. Perhaps one day you'll check out more from the giants of that era - Sinatra, obviously, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, and many more.
None of them had the operatic power of Tom Jones. For me, the greatest male popular singer ever. Even Elvis looked up to him. Tom is 80 now, and still can sing. I saw Tom Jones when he was already in his 70's, and his voice was still amazing. I was in my 20's and was likely one of the youngest in the audience. It was just like the stories you may have heard -- women would run down the center aisle of the auditorium and throw their bras and panties on stage. One woman brought a giant bouquet of flowers for him. Amazing!
He tells a story about performing in the US at the beginning of his career, and Frank Sinatra caught him afterward. Sinatra told him he had a good enough voice, but needed to learn to tone it down and use his microphone to get the volume, because he'd eventually blow out his voice. Jones obviously ignored his advice! LOL! And he never lost his voice, either.
I do remember him having a problem with his voice in the late 60s or early 70s. I remember hearing it on the news. He had to re learn how to sing because he was straining his vocal chords.

Sir Tom Jones, the best ever male vocalist, in that clip he was singing live and no auto tune in those days, he’s phenomenal. He’s now 80 and a judge on the Voice UK and still sounds amazing!
Hes a legend in my humble opinion. Unique vocals and he can still belt them out as a judge on the voice.
My mom used to have the biggest crush on him. I remember watching him with her on our little 19" B&W TV, she'd sing and dance. Great memories :)

Back in the day Tom Jones was my mother's favourite... I was raised up on Tom Jones music and I still love listening to his music to this day... listening to his music These Days his voice hasn't really changed just a little bit more mature but boy oh boy he can sing..

To me, this was his best song ever! Green green grass of home, it's not unusual, Delilah .... they don't compare to the one you just listened to. But he can sing anything. A classic voice, iconic.

Saw Tom Jones perform 4 times,he was fabulous.would have traded all those to have seen Elvis perform live,having said that I have seen the stage show of Elvis and his band 5 times and it was awesome

I saw Tom Jones when he was already in his 70's, and his voice was still amazing. I was in my 20's and was likely one of the youngest in the audience. It was just like the stories you may have heard -- women would run down the center aisle of the auditorium and throw their bras and panties on stage. One woman brought a giant bouquet of flowers for him. Amazing!

He tells a story about performing in the US at the beginning of his career, and Frank Sinatra caught him afterward. Sinatra told him he had a good enough voice, but needed to learn to tone it down and use his microphone to get the volume, because he'd eventually blow out his voice. Jones obviously ignored his advice! LOL! And he never lost his voice, either.
I do remember him having a problem with his voice in the late 60s or early 70s. I remember hearing it on the news. He had to re learn how to sing because he was straining his vocal chords.
Sinatra had several surgeries on his vocal folds to remove nodes.
My mom went to see him back in the day. She was 2nd row I think. Apparently he was gifted and wore really tight jeans. She said you could see the angle of the dangle. Lol
