Good timing. I am about to provide an overview to our management team on their role in Scrum and how they should show up to specific events. This is always a struggle. By the book they are not a part of the day-to-day development of a product. But, that's really hard to take away from somebody who's spent much of their career IN product development. They have good intentions, but many times with bad results, i.e., they question estimates, the provide solutions, they focus on velocity numbers, etc. I would love to see more on what makes a good manager in an agile development. Like "a day in the life of a manager".

I'll add "a day in the life of a manager" to my backlog for a video. In the meantime though, we made a podcast episode about The Role of an Agile Leader: www.mountaingoatsoftware.com/agile/podcast/70-the-role-of-a-leader-in-agile-with-mike-cohn

The best managers I've had didn't necessary avoid these stresses but they admitted when they were overwhelmed because of them, so others could step up or the organization could set realistic expectations. And by doing so they embraced Transparency, the Pillar of Scrum, as well as Openness and Courage, two important Values of Scrum. Great video as usual, Mike!

Thanks, Dave--and that is excellent advice. We all need to remember to ask for help when overwhelmed.

About managers and their function maybe you can add hints for them to move beyond this trend. For example, they are struggling between Agile Transformation and old ways of working. To me, they need clarity. What about tools like Org Topologies to help them see where the organization is and becoming? What other sorts of thinking model could you suggest?

I wrote an article a while back showcasing what managers role is on self-organizing teams:

I'll be sure to make more videos clarifying what managers do.

I'm planning a new video on that. It will probably be a few months out, though.
