Tascam 688 Belt Replacement (and solution to transport stopping during playback)

  • Walkthrough of how to take apart a Tascam 688 and replace the capstan belt.
Also included: how to fix a 688 that stops playing, ff, or rw, for apparently no reason. The culprit is probably the contacts under the lifter arms that detect a tape. These lifters are on the top left of the transport and will stop the transport if not lifted high enough. Over time these contacts collect dust and grime, which makes the transport think there isn't a tape loaded when there actually is.
To fix, simply blast contact cleaner into the area the lifters press into. This is in a recessed area at the top left of the transport (shown in video).

Also the battery is CR2430. It is spot welded/soldered in. So you can't remove it by force. You don't need the battery except for savings scenes. For me the default scenes 1->12 are all I need. So I just left the old battery in there.

For anyone else struggling with getting the wrist piece off (on the front of the unit), I also had to take three additional screws off of the bottom. These are clearly visible and not hidden inside holes or anything.
Also, he forgot to mention there are three screws on the right side of the transport control panel that need to come off before you can pull the panel off.

I just finished changing my belt thanks to this video! I also followed the service manual which you can get from hifiengine. You don't need to remove the screws for the wrist rest. Just loosen them a little and it will slide right out. When putting it back together, put on the side brackets before putting the wrist rest back on. There is a little L bracket that gets in the way of the side brackets. You have to remove it's bottom screw and rotate the L bracket out of the way. Then the side brackets goes in easily. Another gotcha was the screws that mount the transport to the frame. There are three, one on left and two on right. You need the right size screwdriver to get them out. I had to experiment with different bits to find that would grab. If none grab you can try taking pliers to grab the screw and rotate it. When putting these back in , don't over tighten. They are not meant to hold the transport securely. There will be a little wiggle room which gets removed when you put the two final scews that go through the cassette well.

    Dude,
This is great info. I am having a problem where the Capstan motor seems to be continuously spinning, even with no tape present. I noticed your Capstan was spinning until you powered down. My unit is as pristine as yours, with actually very few hours considering 1990(?) Purchase. Virtually no Stunt mode shuttling, or variplay, simply record and playback, maybe 100 hours lifetime on unit. I was always a diligent cleaning / degaussing engineer, having worked on 1” type C” Broadcast units since early 80’s at MTV and HBO. Is the Capstan motor supposed to spin all the time? It would seem that would burn out motor. I only noticed this very quiet day in my loud Condo. I see Battery for CPU under Board you removed, I have not even had to replace that. Thanks a million, any ideas? Do not have either my owners man or a service manual, though I downloaded a barely visible ops man. Great Unit for its day, still works, but I figured some micro switch was giving a false run signal, even without tape in unit. Idea’s? -Bobby

You have to replace the idler tire too probably. It's a little harder to reach. You have to check if the middle motor is running properly. If it does you have to remove that motor and check the rubber tire, clean it or replace it. I'm afraid tascam does not make them anymore. Some shops still have them . Sluggish playback can also mean the pinch roller that presses the tape to the capstan is dirty or worn out

As a Teac Technician this is good to show people how to take something apart but you lack the terms of parts and never look at the service manual to give correct information- the board to the right of transport is for speed adjustments not power or bias. The Capstan wheel is called the Flywheel the plate to the rear is a Thrust plate, The nylon on the capstan motor is a pulley and so on. If you are going to all this trouble with videos get a tripod to get us off the ocean.
