    If this sounds this good in my headphones, I can't imagine what it must sound like right there. Just an amazing experience. I wish I could put into words how dreamy and wavy and mellow of how it sounds to me. Very warm, too.

    I'm old school...Used everything from 1/4" reel-to-reel to 1/2" 16-track Tascam. Love the sound your getting with the 688. I listened to this track on computer monitors cranked up and everything sounds tight, crisp and punchy. Well done!

    My 688 is the only single earthly item I'd save from my house in a fire. Bought it around 2010 for $120, replaced the belt, and it has been buttery smooth ever since.

    WOW! So this is 100% 688 except for leveling in protools?
    How does this compare in sound to the other tascams like the 424 or 464 or 644

    • @Kyle-sg4rm
      @Kyle-sg4rm Před 4 lety +5

      It appears that way. It's truly an excellent sounding recorder if so. I'm told that other hardware such as preamps, eq's, compressors and so on, helps these multitrack cassette recorders sound really good. I'm patiently waiting to hear the results of the album that this fella is recording 100% on cassette tape :) His music demonstrates the potential of the machine far better than the deliberately low-fi punk, indie, etc.
      I'm sure i'll get one at some point, but can't help but think a new 688, or 238 machine would be amazing...depending on the existence of patents, liscensing, etc (Dolby?), i'm sure one of these could be cloned by one of the many odm/oem companies in China and elsewhere. Certain things could be removed (midi not necessary?) and other things added (a simple switchable erase head cover, for sound on sound recording?). Also, a separate mixing desk with enough outs, etc, would be great to go with this...Since minimal bouncing is best, people would likely want to have multiple mic and line signals going to each track of the cassette recorder and mix/record things in one take. Depending on the project.
      It's the kind of thing that encourages musicianship, originality and creativity.

    Dude how do you multitrack on this thing?? With the way I’ve been routing it I have to have my master volume all the way up and it’s barely loud enough to hear over when I have one person over.
    I’ve read the manual for recording and that’s fine for doing one track at a time, but when I record multiple instruments at the same time I just can’t get volume.
    All my levels are great on the VU meters, but once I try to push the volume it will distort. Other tapes from my TASCAM 4 tracks (which I know they don’t playback properly with the track displacement between 4 track and 8 track) are way louder on playback than anything recorded from my machine.
    Sorry for the essay, if you have any thoughts or maybe some other pages in the manual that would be helpful that would be awesome.
    Cool track and great work! Thanks for your time :)

    Sounds fantastic! If I were you, I'd get a Pultec (or a good clone) and run your mixes through it. If it was me, I'd add 1-2db of 8khz on this and boost the low end at 30 or 60hz like 5db while also attenuating 5db. Your sound is good as it is, just wanted to share my ideas :)

    Hey there! Thanks a lot for your videos on the Tascam 688 and that awesome mixdown here!! While watching yours and the videos made by Magic Spiral about the 688 I decided to buy my own machine a couple of weeks ago. So I did an intense recording session over a weekend and produced my new concept album on it, mainly using only the vintage AKG 190C microphone. You can check it out on my Bandcamp site at: leuenberg.bandcamp.com/album/nine-by-one

    So I just received one of these that was unfortunately not packed well. Most of the functions seem to work as advertised except for a major one- I can't seem to get the thing to record anything to tape? The meters are working, I get sound in the head phones, monitors, etc. The tape runs, FF, rewinds, all of those functions, etc. However, when I go to play back what I supposedly recorded nothing? I followed the manual, pages 18-19, word for word and still nothing? I even tested my new cassette tapes just to make sure those weren't bad, but that wasn't it? I'm at a loss and may need to return the item? But I thought that I would try these 688 comment sections first, just in case I was totally missing/not trying something, etc. Anyone on here who may have some words of wisdom, know these units well, and might know what is going on, I would sure appreciate it- Thanks.

    • @dramaface
      @dramaface  Před rokem

      Are you arming the tracks for recording? The red leds should be flashing for the corresponding track numbers you are about to record. If they aren’t armed, it won’t record anything.

    • @MrTeasand
      @MrTeasand Před rokem

      @@dramaface Yep. they are armed. It actually records, I just learned on a whim- I popped the recording from the 688, that won't play, into my 4-track and it actually plays there? Just not on the 688? But a regular cassette will play on the 688, just scrambled of course, just as a test? It has to be in the programming/patching, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong at this point having followed the manual pg 18-19 exactly? I appreciate any advice at this point.

    • @dramaface
      @dramaface  Před rokem

      @@MrTeasand the 688 routing matrix is weird. You have to make sure your output configuration is mapped right or you won’t get playback. But it’s good to know your record and transport functions are working as they should if it’s tracking. I believe it’s something there with output that needs configuration to get the sound out.
