    Not a lot of people know that since the weapon's triple damage from ignited players is separate from mini-crit/crit damage, you can actually stack the multiplier with the two damage buffs to get massive amounts of burst damage. Completely mows down even the highest of HP classes like Soldier and Heavy

    Just before I start watching the whole video, I want to point out the dragon's fury is what I feel the phlogistinator was meant to be, the weapon that turns pyro from the a generalist swiss knife to a whole ass machete. Its whole gimmick sets it apart from the other weapons because it seems to fall in a category that always feels rewarding to use: single-shot guns. If the medic has his crusaders crossbow and the sniper has his huntsman, the dragon's fury becomes pyro's new subclass opportunity.

    • @asteroidrules
      @asteroidrules Před 3 lety +7

      Single shot guns are really at the heart of TF2's game design, there's a reason why the majority of the game's classes have one by default, and of those that don't only one (Heavy) has yet to receive one in an update. They're so satisfying to use, that's what makes the dragon's fury turn the pyro into an offensive powerhouse without being broken like the phlog.

    • @asteroidrules
      @asteroidrules Před 3 lety +2

      @Crack I mean as primary weapons the majority of classes have a single-shot relatively high damage weapon by default. Heavy, medic, and pyro are the only classes who don't have such a weapon as their primary in their default loadout, and of those three, medic has the crossbow and pyro has the dragon's fury, meaning the heavy is the only class currently without a single shot high damage primary.

    The Dragon’s Fury is an insanely rewarding primary for pyro. The only problem that I have with it is the insane amount of frames that can drop when firing. This leads to many problems like getting flashbanged irl everytime you fire if you have an underpowered pc or no custom fixes. Anyways great video as always Pirateer!

  • @Mushroom_Man

    Imo we only need 2 minor alterations for the dragons fury to be god tier:
    1, fix the inconsistent hitbox
    2, have the airblast share the same cooldown speed mechanic as the fireball. Meaning successful airblasts (putting out allies, reflecting projectiles, etc) reduce the cooldown time. It’d encourage precise timing as you’d be rewarded for it and punished for airblast spamming, something i admit i tend to do too much on stock/degreaser.

    • @SarutinMcWhotookmyname
      @SarutinMcWhotookmyname Před 3 lety +5

      a successful airblast giving it the same rate as stock would be pretty cool actually. i personally like the airblast as is, since it makes you decide whether you really need to airblast that rocket, or just dodge and fire, stopping in preparation of the next rocket. it leads to some intresting combat, and leaves room for player improvement, which is what makes it so fun to me.

    I actually disagree with your opinion on the manmelter. In my opinion, the dragons fury is about the only flamethrower I would really WANT to use with it, and that's because I can lead with a 90 damage flare and an 80ish damage fireball. This is huge to me, since I can essentially two shot 7 out of 9 classes, 8 if you consider soldier burning to death. this make for an AMAZING burst option that lets me obliterate anything, and pyros are surprisingly common, letting me farm crits. Manmelter is also good for shutting down snipers, and has some other uses too. if im not using that though, i definitely recommend scorch shot, like you said

    • @dragonfell5078
      @dragonfell5078 Před 3 lety +3

      I use the manmelter for Dragons Fury pyro too. I've found that once I'd gotten used to aiming it, I was able to more consistently secure kills with the crit flare. It's a great long range harassment tool and I don't have to adjust my aim too much because of it's faster flare, which is similar enough to the Dragons Fury that it doesn't throw me off.

    btw, deto w/ backscratcher to cover up the detonator jump health losses is the best combo with dragons fury it seems. sometimes you dont have a surface with the scorch shot. powerjacks usability goes down when you have flare jumping and when you need to focus on your primary 99% of the time.

  • @Premier112
    @Premier112 Před 3 lety +10

    Reflecting DF is something I'm finding difficult to master. The main reasonings are due both to the sheer DF projectile speed (3000 hu? That's fast. A charged huntsman is 2600) and that speed always at close range results in it's always a reflex prediction. Issue there, the differences in shot time between if they connected a previous hit or not makes nailing that timing difficult. Then... you have to reflect it into them.
    I'm starting to learn and pull it off, and when it's done it's very satisfying, but it's slow going. There just aren't enough pyros out there using the weapon proficiently to get enough routine practice. Those who aren't proficient? You can take them down with a mere decent primary tracking alone or most any secondary and/or combo, simply because they can't consistently land their shots anyway. The intense temptation to simply adad+m1 the annoyance away doesn't lend much to training for when a more serious threat is using the weapon.

    • @mangckyatmamon
      @mangckyatmamon Před 3 lety +3

      Usually, when I'm up against a DF pyro, I usually don't try to predict his first shot, I just juke while inching closer to flamethrower range. If he takes the shot and he misses, then I usually win with wm+1 or combo or what have you.
      If he hits with it, sure it's 30 damage but now you know when the next shot is going to be and you can easily reflect it or they risk losing their bonus if they decide to delay it a little bit to throw you off. In a 1v1 against a DF Pyro I usually win about 90% of the time either to flaming them down or reflecting the projectile.

      @@mangckyatmamon
      >now you know when the next shot is going to be
      not necessarily
      if the fury you're facing is really competent, they'll know that the afterburn ticks from a single fireball last just long enough on enemy pyros to bait out an airblast, after which they can nail you again
      most pyros panic at that point and you can get your third killing shot on them quickly

    • @wombat4191
      @wombat4191 Před 2 lety

      Isn't it kinda specifically not a reflex prediction? It's about timing, not reflex, as you'll want to reflect the second ball ~0.5 s after the first to prevent the triple damage. And while the enemy pyro not hitting the first one will mess your timing up, it's not a problem because then the second will just deal negligible damage, and your airblast should be ready in time for the third one. Of course the enemy can try to throw you off by delaying their shot, but they have quite a small window to do so and probably will just hold M1.
      I'm just saying that that's how it should work in theory, not trying to claim I myself do it like that in a real situation. I barely ever play the game anymore anyway.

    If I ever were to remake tf2, I would give Pyro a dragon's fury-like play-style (with a considerable amount of tweaking of course). It's method of dealing damage is much more fun to use and to fight against than the stock flamethrower. Not only is high close range burst damage more appropriate for tf2's general gameplay, but it's much more appropriate for what is supposed to be a close range dps/ambush class. Not to mention that Pyro/Spy interaction would become significantly less rock, paper, scissor-ish than they are right now. It would make Pyro less dependent on secondaries and unlocks and would just generally make him more appealing. I feel like this "flamethrower" was Valve's response to all of the "Pyro is brain dead and takes no skill" complaints and just them trying to finally make his original "close range dps ambush/power class" a reality. It's a shame they avoid this game like the plague (that expression doesn't really mean anything anymore but I'm using it anyway) because they could have really polished it.

    I feel like there are a lot of situations where the Detonator is better than the Scorch, such as 3:10. There, the Scorch Shot’s projectile had little chance of hurting or hitting that soldier, as it needs to hit a player for the “double hit” to apply. If you shot the Detonator as he was on his way down, they explosion would have got him, and the afterburner would have finished him off.
    Also, at least when used with the Dragon’s Fury, the point is to set enemies on fire, not to deal large amounts of ranged damage from the Scorch, so even though the Detonator doesn’t do much damage, it sets people on fire pretty easily, which is what you want in the end.

    I think a really, really necessary change to this weapon would be to the airblast.
    Either allow the pyro to shoot after airblasting while it recharges (as a secondary ammo pool or something) or offer some sort of bonus similar to the faster firing rate. Where reflecting an enemy projectile grants you another airblast as quickly as the other flamethrowers do. Because the problem is even if you reflect a soldiers initial rocket or demomans pipe, you're completely defenseless especially if they've launched you straight upwards.
    Simply pushing enemies away wouldn't grant this bonus, so it can't just deny uber like stock does.

    Panic Attack can be used relatively effectively with this weapon.
    1) After a miss you you have the time for 1 PA shot before your DF recovers, basically giving you free DPS. Same goes for DF airblasts, but this time you have time for 2 shots.
    2) Bullet damage gives you better matchups against demoknights, danger shield snipers, and especially skilled pyros (taking your own reflected boosted DF shot hurts like hell, 101-122 damage is not a joke)
    3) Switching to PA is just a little bit faster than firing another combo DF shot, which comes into play when finishing off light classes at medium range. At max falloff 2 DF shots put a scout at ~20 hp, which gives him a couple seconds to get to a healthpack or, more often, finish you off. A quick PA shot puts a stop to this.

    There is actually a reason to pack a shotty with this weapon
    Other pyros who know that you can reflect the fireballs, or don't but spam airblast anyway like some kind of trained chimpanzee
    You can either opt to play the fakeout game like soldiers have to against competent pyros, or you can just fill them with lead
    Outsmarting them with the fury can still work, but it's a slower, more thoughtful process that you might not have the time for in a fight
    Fury afterburn on other pyros lasts just long enough to bait out an airblast from another pyro

  • @michelecastellotti9172

    The dragons fury is a weapon for an aggressive pyro that knows the limitation of its class and doesn't to loose airblast because it realizes how good of an utility it is, it is more comparable to the backburner, but whereas the backburner rewards you for flanking the enemy, the dragons fury rewards you for improving your aim. It is pretty underappreciated, but i feel like that thats because most pyro mains feel good with their playstyle, which is either pybro, combro, combo or fully aggressive, the dragon fury is a change from the usual style, yes it allows you to fight at longer ranges, but also it requests of you to aim, if you are used to flare guns (especially the stock one, i suggest starting by the scorch shot because its easier to use) you will have little trouble with it, if you are used to a pybro style where the corch or detonator are used (for good reasons) youll have trouble getting used to it.

  • @TJ-hg6op

    People often forget that it functions as one of the best sentry busting tools. An Ubered dragons fury pyro could probably destroy a nest as fast as a demo at time due to the high damage and attack rate.

  • @L_roraito
    @L_roraito Před rokem

    the afterburn of the dragon's fury is 2 seconds long by default, and it's afterburn can be inflicted on enemy pyros. however, the danger shield makes you immune to all afterburn, including the afterburn of the dragon's fury, meaning you can never be burning when hit by the dragon's fury projectile (unless maybe you time it w/ a scorch shot landing or another pyro is actively flaming him, haven't tested). so the sniper can have a more complete afterburn immunity with a leather shield on his back than pyro with an asbestos-lined suit.

    Fun fact: When used correctly this can outclass a degreaser panic attack combo, pair it with a flare gun of anykind and you can cover your bases really quick if you can aim hitscan. Dragon's fury has the +300% damage on burning target stat which can work well with scorch shot or detonator which is the king of afterburn(manmelter also works due to infinite ammo and M2 with dragon fury isn't that good.)

  • @richardcorvo3677

    I always felt the Dragon's Fury feels more like the intended way to play Pyro and turns it into what it was meant to be an offensive class, I never like the stock flamethrower and Degreaser cause it makes Pyro into something that it's not classified as. Sniper is a support class but yet has the power of a full offensive class I think Valve needs to recheck their classifications for these classes or adjust them imo.

    5:53 "There's no reason to use a shotgun because all of your burst damage is concentrated in your primary weapon." This is true, but I still use the stock shotgun with the Dragon's Fury (even if it is basically less powerful). Switching between the DF and the shotgun is a great combo to take down (skilled) enemy pyros, as it makes me unpredictable and it's harder for pyros to reflect the flameball

    -the hot hand-
    the Back Scratcher

  • @gamingdrifter2097

    the dragon fury is surely one if not the best offensive weapon for pyro without sacrificing the airblast,but the thing is tf2 is tf2,with the wacky server,the bots that overcharge the server the hitboxe in generale who can be fuck*d up and depending on the player itself his ping or his pc also the fact that the burst of flame of the dragon fury can lower the fps for some ,the dragon fury go from a fire projectile extremely rewarding for pyro to a sad burst of fire that will touch one time outta 3 that have a less usefull airblast and have difficulty spy-checking,but hey! You got this "i shoot at the heavy, the fire go trough him to touch the medic instead" lol moment so,i'll say that's a win for the pyro class

  • @AnAverageBigBou
    @AnAverageBigBou Před 2 měsíci

    The dragon's fury is a great weapon, the only problem I have with it is the projectile delay on lag, but that's something with most projectile weapons in the game, although it's felt even more with the dragons fury with how fast it moves, at times I was missing shots while aiming directly at my enemy and running parallel to them just because I consistently play on 80+ ping (my location+shitty internet connection are at cause of this), this thing can make it feel so janky to use at times because you need to aim further from where your opponent is now even if you are close to them and the fast projectile speed makes it feel like the shots should hit when they don't

    one of my proudest moments in all of tf2 was one time where i was standing in a doorway protecting my teammates by reflecting almost every projectile that came towards us, and that was with the dragons fury, so it isnt really that bad for airblasting either
