One Day

  • Easter/Resurrection weekend is coming up and this hymn that I hadn't really planned specifically for it turned out to be a good one, telling pretty much the whole story; from Christ's birth through His death, resurrection, and someday His return. Packs a lot in this hymn - perhaps that's why it ended up being over 5 minutes long. :-) But I really appreciate songs that tell a story and it's worth the journey.
    Lyrics:
    One day when heaven was filled with His praises,
    One day when sin was as black as could be,
    Jesus came forth to be born of a virgin-
    Dwelt among men, my example is He!
    [Refrain]
    Living, He loved me; dying, He saved me;
    Buried, He carried my sins far away;
    Rising, He justified freely forever:
    One day He’s coming-O glorious day!
    One day they led Him up Calvary’s mountain,
    One day they nailed Him to die on the tree;
    Suffering anguish, despised and rejected;
    Bearing our sins, my Redeemer is He.
    One day they left Him alone in the garden,
    One day He rested, from suffering free;
    Angels came down o’er His tomb to keep vigil;
    Hope of the hopeless, my Savior is He.
    One day the grave could conceal Him no longer,
    One day the stone rolled away from the door;
    Then He arose, over death He had conquered;
    Now is ascended, my Lord evermore.
    One day the trumpet will sound for His coming,
    One day the skies with His glory will shine;
    Wonderful day, my beloved ones bringing;
    Glorious Savior, this Jesus is mine!
    Lyrics: John Wilbur Chapman (1859-1918)
    Music: Charles Howard Marsh (1886-1956)

    One of my favorite hymns, ever since January 1965, when as a young, 17 year old sailor, totally depraved and enslaved to sin, God saved me by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. I praise God and will continue to do so for all eternity.

    Wow, don't hear a mellow voice like that very often! Also don't hear beautiful old songs brought back to their original life like that either. What a blessing.

    Lovely and well interpreted !
    I sang that song when I was in a boarding Christian school in south India in the 70’s.
    Each time we sang that song in our assembly, I was moved always !
    This school was in Ooty and named LUSHIGNTON SCHOOL for those who knows.
    Bless you 🙏🏼

    You are such a blessing. Your voice has a quality to it that seems heavenly sent. Very calming and has such a humbleness that allows the words to show forth The Lord's beauty. Don't ever change. :-) Enjoy your lovely wife singing along with you. God bless you all. God is certainly using you for His glory.

    I am so glad I found your video. I have been trying to find the traditional hymn version of this song. My sisters and I used to sing this together when we were young. Now the only version you can usually find is by Casting Crowns. They use the lyrics, but changed the melody. I love the original because it carries with it such sweet memories of days gone by. And it is also just a beautiful song with a precious message. Thank you so very much for sharing this video!

    You kind of faded out on the last verse. That is the verse that should have added power / punch! When I led hymns with Seniors. Every time they came to the last verse of any hymn about the Return of CHRIST....they would belt it out with volume and emotion. It always stirred my heart. I miss them all because I loved them so much and know that one day...I'll see them all in Glory.
